Bled Slovenia, Lake Bled - Blejski Otok - Blejski grad
In the northwestern part of Slovenia near the Austrian border you will find the famous Lake Bled at an altitude of 475m above sea level. The beautiful lake is also one of the warmest lakes in the Alps. The lake with the island (Blejski Otok) with the Assumption Church is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Slovenia. The place Bled with the castle of Bled (Blejski grad) is located directly on the lake.

In the second part of our Slovenia in One Day Tour with Slovenia Explorer, we head to Bled to see the postcard-perfect Lake Bled in all its wintry glory and then head up to Bled Castle to watch the sunset. We also tried the famous Bled cake and ended the day in the middle of a Christmas market in Ljubljana. What a great day!

We traveled to Slovenia to take a trip on the Transalpina steam train, but no trip to this scenic gem would be complete without visiting Lake Bled and Bled Castle set in the stunningly beautiful Julian Alps. Bled Island with its iconic church is situated in the middle of the emerald green waters reached only by rowing boat or traditional Pletna boat. Perched high on a rocky cliff overlooking the lake is the picture post card medieval castle with its magnificent views over the surrounding lake the mountains.
Firstly we visit the castle where we are treated to a medieval market before walking up the steep path to the castle where we see a cultural play and traditional dancing. After spending time taking in the awesome views we return to our coach for a tour around the lake finishing at the landing stage from which the lovingly looked after Pletna boats ferry visitors the Bled Island.

Bled Castle (Slovene: Blejski grad, German: Burg Veldes) is a medieval castle built on a precipice above the city of Bled in Slovenia, overlooking Lake Bled. According to written sources, it is the oldest Slovenian castle and is currently one of the most visited tourist attractions in Slovenia.
The castle was first mentioned in a 22 May 1011 deed of donation issued by Emperor Henry II in favor of the Bishops of Brixen. Then located in the March of Carniola, it passed to the Austrian House of Habsburg in 1278.
The oldest part of the castle is the Romanesque tower. In the Middle Ages more towers were built and the fortifications were improved. Other buildings were constructed in the Renaissance style. The buildings are arranged around two courtyards, which are connected with a staircase.
There is a chapel in the upper courtyard, which was built in the 16th century and renovated around 1700, when it was also painted with illusionist frescoes. The castle also has a drawbridge over a moat.
