Driving Downtown Streets - State Street - Chicago Illinois USA - Episode 27.
Starting Point: State Street - .
State Street is a large south-north street in Chicago, Illinois, USA
State Street shopping
State Street became a shopping destination during the 1900s and is referred to in the song Chicago, sung by Frank Sinatra where Frank refers it to State Street, that great street. In 1979, Mayor Jane Byrne converted the downtown portion into a pedestrian mall with only bus traffic allowed. Mayor Richard M. Daley oversaw the State Street Revitalization Project and on November 15, 1996, the street was reopened to traffic.[6]
During the second half of the 20th century, State Street was eclipsed by Michigan Avenue's Magnificent Mile as a shopping district. Various projects to restore State Street's glory have been met with some success, and the State Street corridor is gaining residential as well as more traditional commercial development. New York & Company, Old Navy, Urban Outfitters, and The Children's Place have recently opened up flagships on State Street. Borders Books had a flagship on State, but the Borders chain has since shut down. Today, the only two main department store chains that remain are Macy's (the former Marshall Field's flagship store) and Sears (now closed) on State. The department store chain Carson Pirie Scott closed their flagship store on State Street on February 21, 2007 after over 100 years of business in that location. The Block 37 opened in 2009, bringing with it a large group of upscale retailers to State Street, including Anthropologie, Puma AG, and Zara. On January 12, 2012, Walgreens's opened a flagship location at Randolph Street,[7][8][9][10] where it had previously existed from 1926 to 2005,[11] when construction of Joffrey Tower necessitated its demolition.

Chicago is the third most populous city in the United States. With over 2.7 million residents, it is the most populous city in the state of Illinois and the Midwestern United States, and the county seat of Cook County. The Chicago metropolitan area, often referred to as Chicagoland, has nearly 10 million people and is the third-largest in the U.S.[4]
Chicago was incorporated as a city in 1837, near a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed, and grew rapidly in the mid-nineteenth century.[5] The city is an international hub for finance, commerce, industry, technology, telecommunications, and transportation: O'Hare International Airport is the second busiest airport in the world when measured by aircraft traffic; the region also has the largest number of U.S. highways and rail road freight.[6] In 2012, Chicago was listed as an alpha global city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network,[7] and ranked seventh in the world in the 2014 Global Cities Index.[8] Chicago has the third largest gross metropolitan product in the United States—about $630.3 billion according to 2014-2016 estimates.[9] The Chicago metropolitan area is also home to several universities, including Northwestern University, University of Chicago, and University of Illinois at Chicago.
In 2014, Chicago had 50.2 million international and domestic visitors.[10] Chicago's culture includes the visual arts, novels, film, theater, especially improvisational comedy, and music, particularly jazz, blues, soul, gospel[11] and house music. It also has professional sports teams in each of the major professional leagues. Chicago has many nicknames, the best-known being the Windy City
Block 37 & the New Washington CTA Pedway
In 1989, Mayor Daley tore down a vibrant block containing stores, restaurants, the Loop's narrowest building and the United Artists' movie theater to create -- well, nothing. The idea was a Water Tower Place-style project with shops, offices, a hotel residential apartments and a multiplex movie theatre on the block bounded by State, Dearborn, Washington and Randolph Sts. Didn't work.
The vacant lot left by this demolition (the only thing left standing was a Commonwealth Edison substation) sat for over 15 years. Right after the buildings were demolished, the country was hit by a recession. A succession of developers tried and failed to gather the financing to build on this site. Finally, Mayor Daley decided to put lipstick on a pig, and turn Block 37 into an outdoor art gallery and open market in the summer, and a skating rink in the winter. The upshot was that Chicago now had two giant vacant lots on what used to be its premier shopping street. The other, on State & Adams, was formed by the demolition of the Loop Montgomery Ward store in 1984. That lot, too, sat vacant for the better part of 15 years.
After many fits and starts, construction on a greatly scaled-back Block 37 project began in 2006, closing the underground Pedway between the CTA Red and Blue Lines in the process. The hotel and residential portions were scratched, but the now-largely-vacant retail portion, consisting of a curving hallway on the first floor with an atrium punched through the upper levels, opened around Thanksgiving, with only a few of its stores open to take advantage of the 2009 Christmas shopping season.
Construction had to be stopped a few times because the developers ran into financial trouble. Retailers, who would rather walk over hot glass on Michigan Avenue than be comfortable on State Street, dropped in and out of the project. At present, 11 of its stores are actually open for business. You can read about the financial drama that beset the developers even as the project was nearing its opening date at
Godiva, Steve Madden, the Puma Store, Zara, Au Bon Pain and L'Occitane are among the pioneers who will be taking the retail arrows this holiday season. The local CBS affiliate, WBBM Channel 2, has a ground-level news studio at the corner of Washington & Dearborn. But if the chain retailers stay away even after the recession ends, will the shoestring old-line mom-and-pop businesses who made the old Block 37 jump be able to afford space in this sleek, glittering tomb? Will Stop & Shop, the gourmet grocery store that was a showpiece of the old Block 37, be allowed to reestablish its magic here? Will the Loop ever have another movie theatre besides the Gene Siskel, where you CAN'T EVEN GET FUCKING BUTTER ON YOUR FUCKING POPCORN!? You tell me;-)
Aqua - Chicago
'Aqua is an 82-story mixed-use residential skyscraper in the Lakeshore East development in downtown Chicago, Illinois. Designed by a team led by Jeanne Gang of Studio Gang Architects, with James Loewenberg of Loewenberg & Associates as the Architect of Record, it includes five levels of parking below ground. The building's eighty-story, 140,000 sq ft (13,000 m2) base is topped by a 82,550 sq ft (7,669 m2) terrace with gardens, gazebos, pools, hot tubs, a walking/running track and a fire pit. Each floor covers approximately 16,000 sq ft (1,500 m2).'
Marshall Fields (Macy's State Street) Chicago
Marshall Field and Company Building or Macy's at State Street, in Chicago, Illinois, was the flagship location of the Marshall Field's chain of department stores and, since 2006, is the main Chicago location of the Macy's chain. The building is located in the Chicago Loop community area in Cook County, Illinois, United States, and it takes up the entire city block bounded clockwise from the west by North State Street, East Randolph Street, North Wabash Avenue, and East Washington Street.[3] Marshall Field's established numerous important business firsts in this building,[4] and it is regarded as one of the three most influential establishments in the nationwide development of the department store.[5] Both the building name and the name of the stores formerly headquartered at this building changed names on September 9, 2006 as a result of the merger of the May Department Stores (Marshall Field's former parent) with the Federated Department Stores which led to the integration of the Marshall Field's stores into the Macy's retailing network.[6]
The building, which is the second largest store in the world,[7] was both declared a National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 2, 1978,[2][1][8] and it was designated a Chicago Landmark on November 1, 2005.[9] The building architecture is known for its multiple atria and for having been built in stages over the course of more than two decades.[10] Its ornamentation includes a Tiffany & Co. mosaic ceiling and a pair of well-known outdoor clocks, which serve as symbols of the store.[10]

How Do We Solve The Chicago Problem?
A Chicago house party devolved into chaos when a dispute led to the shootings of 13 people -- possibly at random, police said. The 13 victims range from 16 to about 48 years old, said Fred Waller, chief of the Chicago Police Bureau of Patrol. Four of the victims -- including the 16-year-old -- are hospitalized in critical condition. The other victims are in stable condition, Waller said. The melee broke out around 12:35 a.m. Sunday in the 5700 block of South May Street. This incident stemmed from a dispute within that party, Waller said. This party was given in the memory of a subject that was slain in April. We're still developing details as far as that goes.

Slow Motion Fatal Head On Car Crash in Oak Lawn | Chicago
OAK LAWN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
An 81-year-old man who went through a red light and barreled into nearly a dozen cars Sunday in Oak Lawn — killing two nuns and himself — had been slumped over the wheel of his pickup truck moments earlier, police said Monday, and they are trying to determine where he was beforehand.
Edward L. Carthans, 81, of the 11000 block of South Morgan in Chicago, died in the crash, as did Sister Jean Stickney, 86, and Sister Kab Kyoung Kim, 48, both of the Little Company of Mary Sisters. They were in a car together and died at the scene, police said in a news conference Monday morning at Oak Lawn Village Hall.
Stickney lived in the 10000 block of South Sawyer in Evergreen Park, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Kim's home address wasn't identified Monday morning.
Twenty-three people were treated at the scene, and 11 were taken to Christ Medical Center, Little Company of Mary Hospital and Palos Hospital, officials said Monday. Two were in critical condition. Updates on their conditions were not available Monday morning, but most remain hospitalized, officials said.
Eleven cars were involved in the crash, which occurred about 4:27 p.m. Sunday at 95th Street and Cicero Avenue.
Carthans was the driver of the Ford F-150 pickup truck that was driving west on 95th Street and crashed into eastbound vehicles stopped at the traffic light, officials said.
Police are trying to determine where Carthans was before the incident. A male motorist found him slumped over the wheel of his truck at 95th and Western Avenue shortly before the crash at Cicero, Oak Lawn Police Division Chief Randy Palmer said.
Carthans assured the man that he was OK and drove away, police said. Moments later, his truck struck three vehicles at 95th and Keeler Avenue.
None of the drivers in that crash was seriously injured, Palmer said. Carthans then ran the red light at Cicero and caused the fatal accident, Palmer said.
The investigation continues into what Oak Lawn Fire Chief George Sheets called “the most violent and most bizarre accident” he's seen in his career.
Accident reconstruction teams have mapped out where each car was located, Police Sgt. Bob Brewer said. Next is determining how fast the truck was going and what happened after the initial impact.
Palmer earlier said it was too early to determine whether alcohol was a factor in the incident.
Oak Lawn village manager Larry Deetjen said that after the man ran the red light at Cicero, he veered into the turning lane of eastbound 95th and “the truck flipped in the air and struck more vehicles.”
An Oak Lawn man who said he was hurt in the crash was at the police station Sunday night to give a witness account, he said.
Kimothy Randall, 55, of Oak Lawn, whose left arm was in a sling, said he had a sore left shoulder and neck. He and his wife were at the red light when the crash occurred.
“All of a sudden, we heard, ‘Boom, boom, boom.' I didn't know where it was coming from,” he said. “Then I see all the cars in front of us being pushed back to us. All of a sudden, the truck just dropped down. It crushed the car in front of me, then it landed on our car. It scared the (expletive) out of us.”
Rick Gile, the area manager of the Mattress Firm, on the corner of the intersection, said he saw the pickup truck come “flying westbound. The east-west traffic was stopped. He somehow got through the north-south traffic. All the cars were parked at the traffic light and he plowed into them. The pickup truck ‘ramped' up a minivan and nose-dived into the rest of the cars.”
Janae Mitchell and Pat Davis, both of Chicago's Washington Heights neighborhood, said they were eastbound on 95th Street after seeing a movie in Chicago Ridge.
“We saw the truck flip in the air. It was horrible,” Mitchell said. “This is like something you see in a movie.”

Millennium Park, Chicago
Millennium Park is a public park located in the Loop community area of Chicago in Illinois, US, and originally intended to celebrate the second millennium. It is a prominent civic center near the city's Lake Michigan shoreline that covers a 24.5-acre (99,000 m2) section of northwestern Grant Park. The area was previously occupied by parkland, Illinois Central rail yards, and parking lots.[1] The park, which is bounded by Michigan Avenue, Randolph Street, Columbus Drive and East Monroe Drive, features a variety of public art. As of 2009, Millennium Park trailed only Navy Pier as a Chicago tourist attraction.[2] In 2015, the park became the location of the city's annual Christmas tree lighting.
