Vietnam 3: Hoi An and Marble Mountain
Vietnam Adventure -- Chapter 3: Hoi An and Marble Mountain
From Saigon we flew to Da Nang, and from there were met by our guide to take us by Minibus to Hoi An. After checking in at the beautiful Hoi An Beach Resort, our guide took us to the old town of Hoi An, which is listed as a World Heritage site. Hoi An was a major international port in the 16th and 17th centuries, and the foreign influences are evident to this day. The heart of the city is still the Old Town, full of winding lanes and Chinese-styled shop-houses. It is particularly beautiful in the evening as the sun goes down. While almost all shops now cater to the tourist trade, the area has been largely preserved, which is unusual in Vietnam. Renovation here has proceeded slowly and carefully - mercifully absent are the towering concrete buildings and karaoke parlors.
Some interesting attractions include the Japanese Covered Bridge (Chua Cau or Lai Vien Kieu), on the west end of Tran Phu Street. The bridge was constructed in the early 1600's by the Japanese community, roughly 40 years before they left the city to return to Japan under the strict policy of sakoku enforced by the Tokugawa Shogunate, and renovated in 1986. Today, it's the symbol of Hoi An.
We found the Quan Cong Temple at 24 Tran Phu Street very interesting, and enjoyed a lovely trip on the Thu Bon River in a beautifully decorated, ancient Swan Boat captained by the usual friendly and accommodating skipper. Willie and Katie both got to drive the boat also. This little excursion is a must -- it gives you a very different perspective of Hoi An from the water level, and is a very relaxing few hours on the water.
Numerous congregation halls, where Chinese expatriate residents socialized and held meetings, are dotted about the town. They are typically named after the home region of their members. Our favorite was the Cantonese Assembly Hall (Quang Dong) at 176 Tran Phu Street. Built in 1885, it has a calm courtyard with ornate statuary and we liked the kitschy pastel dragon statues.
Tailor shops abound and made-to-measure shirts, blouses, dresses, suits etc. are on offer from the renowned tailors of Hoi An. There are now well over 400 of these shops throughout Hoi An. As a rule of thumb, keep going back until you get your clothes right!
Food in Hoi An is, even by high Vietnamese standards, cheap and tasty. We had some wonderful meals and good atmospheres in several restaurants. As in most restaurants, we lost Gavin to some of the wait staff as we entered since he was such an attraction to the locals, being a yellow-haired baby with blue eyes!
We visited the Marble Mountains and one of the amazing marble carving shops. The area is famous for stone sculpture making and stone-cutting crafts. Direct marble rock extraction from the mountains was banned recently. Materials are now being transported from quarries in Quang Nam province.
Marble Mountains (Ngũ Hành Sơn - Five elements mountains) is a cluster of five marble and limestone hills located in Ngu Hanh Son ward, south of Da Nang. The five 'mountains' are named after the five elements - Kim (metal), Thuy (water), Moc (wood), Hoa (fire) and Tho (earth).
All of the mountains have cave entrances and numerous tunnels, and we climbed to the summit of one of the peaks. We were impressed with the many marble statues carved inside these Buddhist cave-sanctuaries.
We were able to get some laundry done, and although cold, took a long walk on the beach.

Hoi An - The town of peace
The old town isn’t a big place, but its three or four main streets are interspersed with countless alleyways and byways.
If you venture away from the tailors’ shops, restaurants and souvenir shacks you’ll find alleys are speckled with homes, stalls and out-of-the-way restaurants in which to while away your time. It’s a town to get briefly, but satisfyingly, lost in.
Hoi An’s buildings reflect a sense of calm and forgottenness. All painted the same shade of rich yellow, they’re now flecked with green moss and grime. Bursts of pastel blue or green break the monotony.
Chinese and Japanese architecture permeate the temples and the rows of wooden houses. Many of the buildings are built on the same template: two-story constructions with a small open courtyard.
The best place to observe the architecture is in one of the town’s many art galleries, such as T&G Art Gallery (46 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street).
On a rainy day, the courtyard becomes a place of slow, dripping water and artwork set slightly too close to the open air. It’s peaceful; silent but for the strains of Mozart drifting in from the streets.

Let's Make a Deal!
Bargaining for a leather belt at Ben Thanh market in Vietnam.
Price started at $1.200.000 Viet Nam Dong, about $60 USD, but for me a special price of $1.000.000 VND ($50USD) was offered. This was quickly reduced to $850.000 VND ($42USD) then $800.000 VND ($40USD). I offered $300.000 VND ($15USD) and after a few minutes of haggling a FINAL, BEST PRICE of $650.000 VND ($32USD) was offered to me.
Let's make a deal....this girl, like most Vietnamese women, wanted to hold my baby really bad. Every where my wife and I go in Vietnam people are touching and grabbing our baby boy. I'm not sure if this is because they love kids so much or because he has blonde hair and blue eyes. So I asked her if she wanted to play a game?
I give her my baby to hold and if he doesn't cry I will pay her $1.200.000 VND for the belt. If he does cry she gives me the belt free. She was pretty hesitant about having to give a belt away free so I gave her a new offer and here is where we start filming $800.000 if he doesn't cry, $300.000 VND if he does, or we can do $600.000/$400.000.
After some coaxing and prodding from some onlookers and other shop owners she agreed to $800.000/$300.000
I won, but she wouldn't honor the agreement and I ended up paying $400.000 VND ($20USD).
Fun times in Vietnam!

Lyrics:
I was a girl, you were a boy and I,
I saw you there Tuesday Affair, blue skies.
You looked at me, we casually caught eyes.
But then I knew my waiting was through,
When you smiled at me.
A story of a love.
Yeah, as fierce as it once was.
For every time you held me,
And everything you'd tell me,
I was still the last to know.
For everything you'd show me,
And know you say you're sorry,
I was still the last to know.
Honesty lost, time across the truth.
With a look and a sigh he pierced my eyes,
And it's then I knew.
That words were words and nothing could hurt more.
But I walk away forgetting that day that something knew.
A story of a love.
Yeah, as fierce as it once was.
For every time you held me,
And everything you'd tell me,
I was still the last to know.
For everything you'd show me,
And know you say you're sorry,
I was still the last to know.
I waited, debated, but the cold winds came through.
I felt it, it's entrance.
The chills of a, the chills of a lost love.
For every time you held me,
And everything you'd tell me,
I was still the last to know.
For everything you'd show me,
And know you say you're sorry,
I was still the last to know.
I was a girl, you were a boy and I,
I saw you there Tuesday Affair, blue skies.

Hi. I'm Jennifer from Workroom Social, and today I'm going to show you how to use a double needle on your sewing machine.
Here is the double needle that I'm using, and a double needle is exactly what it sounds like. It's two needles connected to one shaft and it makes two lines of stitching that are exactly the same distance apart.
The first thing you want to do is take out the needle that you currently have in your sewing machine. I just twisted the screw that holds my needle in and took it out. I'll put that needle aside. Then I want to take my double needle and put it into the sewing machine. I want to make sure that the flat of the shaft is towards the back of the sewing machine and that on my needle eyes, the grooves on the eyes are towards me. The other thing you have to note when you're using a double needle is you need to use a presser foot that accommodates for a zigzag. So if I were to use the presser foot that I have in my machine right now, which is for a straight stitch, the needles would hit the presser foot and break.
So go ahead and put your zigzag foot in your machine, and then you can put your needle into the machine. Remember to press the needle up as far as it will go and then tighten the screw that holds your needle in place.
My machine was already threaded, so I'm going to leave everything exactly the way it is, and I'm going to take the thread that is in the hook on the left, and I'm going to thread it through the eye of the left needle. So I'm just going to pull and then I'm going to tuck it underneath the presser foot.
Now for the second thread, you're going to take a second spool and put it on the second spindle on your machine. For this spool, you want your thread, if you notice here on the first one, we have our thread coming off the back and it's kind of going counter-clockwise. We want the second spool to be the opposite. So we're going to put that on, but the thread is going to come off on the front side of the machine.
Then we're going to thread everything just the same, except when we get to the bottom, you're going to put the thread through the little hook that's on the right of the needle, and then you're going to thread the needle that's on the right. Then tuck that thread underneath your presser foot. Then you can grab all three of your threads, both these top stitch and your bobbin thread and pull them all so that you can make sure that everything's moving smoothly.
Now I noticed when I did that, that when I threaded the needle on the right, it got twisted. The thread got twisted around the needle. So that was a good thing to see before I started sewing and all I will do is just clip the thread, take that piece out, and re-thread the eye of the needle. So now I have all my threads. I'm just going to pull, and everything is moving together.
Okay. Great. So now you're ready to sew. I'm just going to use this piece of fabric. I'm going to line it up with our five-eighths guide on our seam, on our throat plate on the seam guide, and I'm just going to sew a straight stitch on the stitch type. Then the link, I'm going to do a three.
Now we can see our double needle, or twin needle stitch. This is on the right side of the fabric. If you'll notice on the wrong side of the fabric, we have a zigzag, which allows for stretch. So the twin needle can be used for sewing knits, because it has some stretch, and it can also be used as purely a decorative finishing stitch.
So that's how you use a twin needle.
