Blue Man Group: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
September 26, 2016 by BOB BOILEN • They came, they measured, and they returned to perform a show like no other. It was the great NPR Tiny Desk Takeover by Blue Man Group.
If you've not seen this performance ensemble and their production in New York, Las Vegas, Orlando, Boston, Chicago or Berlin, then you've missed a night of magical fun. These Blue Men may never say a word, but the performances make for poignant looks at who we are as humans. They also make unusual music on instruments of their own design.
Josh Rogosin, our engineer for the Tiny Desk, first saw them in their early days, some 25 years ago at New York's Astor Place Theatre. He told me how the Blue Men would retrofit some of their theatrical magic — including their custom-made instruments, confetti cannons and streamers — to fit this small desk space.
Every band that plays the Tiny Desk must work within the restrictions of the space. So instead of installing their entire signature PVC instrument, what ended up behind the desk was about a third of it. On the right side of the desk, their Shred Mill makes its internet debut: It's a drum machine triggered by magnets that changes rhythm depending where they are placed on the home-made variable-speed conveyor belt. They also invented something called a Spinulum, whose rhythmic tempo is controlled by rotating a wheel that plucks steel guitar strings. (You can read a full description on the instruments below.)
In the end the Blue Men and their dressed-down accompanists performed a Tiny Desk concert like no other. I've been familiar with their music since my days as director of All Things Considered in the 1990s, when I would play their tunes between news stories. Seeing all this come to life (and I know this is true for Josh, as well) was simply unforgettable. From the unique sounds of the PVC to the strumming sounds of the Spinulum to their Meditation For Winners mantras, you'll get a taste of why this troupe's art is so universal and so much fun.
THE INSTRUMENTS
(as told to us by the Blue Man Group)
Chapman Stick: A combination of a guitar, a bass guitar, and a washboard, the Chapman Stick is 10 strings and all neck. While it can be played with fingers, we often bow the Stick with a bass string. This method, pioneered by Blue Man Group, is called the Mandelbrot Stick Technique.
Cimbalom: An old hammered chromatic string instrument from Hungary that we gave a plywood update to. It's normally played gently with soft mallets, but Blue Man Group hits it aggressively with drumsticks.
Shredmill: Making its internet debut, this new Blue Man Group creation is a treadmill-shaped, electro-mechanical sequencer that a Blue Man (or anyone else) can use to create rhythmic patterns. Placing and/or moving the Shred Mill's tiny little magnets in order to change the sequence (shredding) is dangerously addictive. If you are ever presented with the opportunity to shred, proceed at your own risk.
Spinulum: Have you ever watched Wheel of Fortune and thought to yourself, I wonder what would happen if I took that wheel, shrunk it down to about a foot in diameter, mounted it to a stand, and replaced that little white flipper with steel guitar strings? Us too! The Spinulum is a brand new Blue Man Group instrument that is part slide guitar, part bicycle wheel, and 100 percent dynamite!
PVC: Blue Man Group's signature instrument is comprised of several lengths of polyvinyl chloride pipe that make an almost synthesizer-like sound when struck with a closed-cell foam rubber paddle. This performance only includes the center, high-octave section of the PVC. This is not because we have a problem with the other sections of the PVC. We actually really like them. There just wasn't enough space. It's a tiny desk.
MIDI PVC: The signature Blue Man Group PVC instrument shrunk down and electrified.

Boston Travel Tips: 10 Things to Know Before You Go
Everything YOU need to know before you travel to Boston Massachusetts in the USA. Boston is the hub of New England, in the Northeast of the United States. Visiting Boston is like a history class in person. Boston is the cradle of much of the US’s history including playing a significant role in the American Revolution, having the first public library in the US, and the first lighthouse. Boston is a city of Neighborhoods, with 23 distinct neighborhoods. Boston has lots of Parks -- public green space is 17 percent of the city. You are never more than a half mile from a park. Boston is very compact.. Downtown Boston is roughly 2 square miles. About 13% of Boston citizens commute by foot, giving it the highest percentage of pedestrian commuters in major cities of the United States.
2 - Top Attractions
Freedom trail
A red-brick path connecting the most famous sites. 2.5 miles long.
16 of Boston’s most historic sites including:
Faneuil Hall Marketplace, the Paul Revere House and Old North Church.
North End
The end of the Freedom Trail, and home to Boston’s Little Italy district.
Make sure to get a cannoli from Mike’s Pastry or Modern Pastry.
Boston Common was declared America’s first public park in 1634
Right next to it is the Boston Public Garden, America’s first Botanic Garden
JFK Presidential Library
All about the life of the US’s 35th president… a bit of the beaten path, but worth it for history buffs.
Beacon Hill
Known as Boston’s most “beautiful” neighborhood
Known for its charming, narrow cobblestone streets, federal style row houses and gaslit streetlamps. It’s also considered to be one of Boston’s most desirable and expensive residential areas in the city
Fenway Park
Home to the Boston Red Sox, built in 1912, it’s the Oldest Major League Baseball Stadium still in use.
3 - Food
Quincy Market
great gathering spot and place for lunch, with over 35 stands offering a wide food selection.
Seafood
Scrod - Catch of the day
Chowders, Lobster Rolls
Italian Food
Dunkin Donuts started here.. And yes, there’s one on every corner.
Beer: Visit the Sam Adams Brewery opened in 1984. Tours are free.. And with free beer tasting!
There’s **NO HAPPY HOUR**
Boston has banned after work drink specials. Time-of-day deals are limited to food. So you’ll find cheap food options from 4pm-6pm, but not alcohol.
4 - Getting In
You’ll likely be flying in to Boston Logan International Airport, which is just a short 3 miles away from Boston. 40 airlines that serve Boston, and 3 hotels onsite
You can also take the Blue Line Subway, but you have to take the Massport shuttle bus to get to the Subway stop.
Bus: Silver Line SL1 will take you in to the city along the waterfront to South Station -- it’s free for passengers arriving at the airpor
5 - Getting Around
Getting around Boston is like navigating a maze
6 - When to go
Summer is peak tourist season (June-August)
But locals recommend Fall, September & October. The leaves are changing color, and the weather is much more pleasant.
Winter is cold! And long! With lots of snow! You’ve been warned!
Spring often has lots of rain.
Biggest Holidays are St Patrick’s Day and the Boston Marathon
Re-enactment of the Boston Tea Party every year on DECEMBER 16
7 - Language
English.. But the Boston accent is pretty thick, and there’s some interesting local slang
Not everyone has the Boston Accent… but you’ll definitely hear it
8 - Wicked Wifi
I mentioned Wifi means good… Wicked Wifi is the cities metropolitan wifi network. The SSID is “WickedFreeWifi”
9 - Hotels
Boston is old, and so are the hotels and AirBNBs. If you are expecting an elevator and A/C, call to check in advance.
10 - Universities
More than 20 colleges in Boston alone… and Harvard, and MIT which are technically not in Boston, but in Cambridge across the river.
140,000 college students call Boston home.
Makes for lots of cheap eats, and nightlife options.

Lyrics:
Woah, oh, oh
For the longest time
Woah, oh, oh
For the longest
If you said goodbye to me tonight
There would still be music left to write
What else could I do
I'm so inspired by you
That hasn't happened for the longest time
Once I thought my innocence was gone
Now I know that happiness goes on
That's where you found me
When you put your arms around me
I haven't been there for the longest time

♥♫♞ REMIX DONNA SUMMER- I FEEL LOVE ♥♫ Full HD 1080p Music Song Video mix Edit version 2013
Donna Summer (née LaDonna Adrian Gaines) (December 31, 1948 -- May 17, 2012)[ was an American singer and songwriter who gained prominence during the disco era of the late 1970s. A five-time Grammy Award winner, Summer was the first artist to have three consecutive double albums reach number one on the United States Billboard chart, and she also charted four number-one singles in the United States within a 13-month period.Born into a devoutly Christian middle class African American family in Boston, Massachusetts, Summer first became involved with singing through church choir groups before joining a number of bands influenced by the Motown Sound. Influenced by the counterculture of the 1960s, she became the front singer of a psychedelic rock band named Crow and moved to New York City. Joining a touring version of the musical Hair, she spent several years living in West Germany, where she married Helmut Sommer, whose surname she adopted as her stage name.
Returning to the United States, Summer co-wrote the song Love to Love You Baby with Pete Bellotte; music producer Giorgio Moroder convinced her to sing it herself, and it was released to mass commercial success in 1975, particularly on the disco scene. Over the following years, Summer followed this success with a string of other disco hits, such as I Feel Love, MacArthur Park, Hot Stuff, Bad Girls and No More Tears (Enough is Enough). Becoming known as the Queen of Disco, she regularly appeared at the Studio 54 club in New York City, while her music gained a particularly large following within the gay community. Struggling with depression, she subsequently became a born-again Christian in 1980.Diagnosed with lung cancer, Summer died on May 17, 2012, at her home in Naples, Florida,[3] after a battle with the disease. She was posthumously described as the undisputed queen of the Seventies disco boom who reached the status of one of the world's leading female singers. Her work with Moroder on the song I Feel Love has also been described as really the start of electronic dance music, by Moroder himself. In December 2012, it was announced that Summer would be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.

I Feel Love has been sampled several times—by artists such as Blondie, David Guetta, Darren Hayes, Whitney Houston, Madonna, Bette Midler, Kylie Minogue, Moby, Moloko, Mylo, Stuart Price, Diana Ross, Britney Spears, and Robbie Williams. The Italian company Gucci used a special version of it in the Flora perfume advertising, filmed by Chris Cunningham. Venus Hum with Blue Man Group also recorded this song with the Japanese singer Kumi Koda for their album The Complex. In 2006, Tracy Bonham stood in for Hum in the Blue Man Group tour, sang the same song. Bronski Beat and Marc Almond released the track as a duet with an added bridge section and titled it I Feel Love/Johnny Remember Me, reaching number three on the British charts in April 1985. In 1992, the British alterna-pop group Curve recorded a version for the NME's 40th anniversary compilation Ruby Trax, which became an instant underground hit. When it comes to Summer's two songs that refer to electricity and magnetism (electromagnetism), Laura Branigan published an electrifying cover of Summer's hit song Dim All the Lights in 1995, and Emmylou Harris sang a cover of Summer's radiant song On the Radio for her album White Shoes in 1983.Love to Love You Baby was sampled in Beyoncé Knowles's Naughty Girl and by TLC in their original version of I'm Good at Being Bad, but was removed by request of Summer on later editions. This song has been covered in portions onstage by Dionne Warwick.Starting Over Again was a number one hit on the Hot Country Songs chart as a single for Dolly Parton in 1980. It also was a top-forty hit for Parton on the Billboard Hot 100. Reba McEntire named her album of 1995 for this song, and McEntire's version hit No. 17 on the country singles chart in 1996. McEntire stated in the album's liner notes that her recording of the song was intended as a tribute to Summer and Parton, both artists.

Boston - VMA Nationals, 2019 (Powerhouse) // A Redwood Peak Cinematic Film
Back in the middle of April, I took my first plane trip that I'm able to remember. I went to the East Coast for the first time. I won my first nationals, and I went on my first cruise. Powerhouse and Sound Sensations went to Boston to compete their show choir sets, and I came along with them. As one of the final competitions of the year, here's a 15-minute blast to the past from my perspective in Powerhouse.
I can't believe what we've accomplished this year as a group wholly. I couldn't ask for this year to be better in any possible way-- to the seniors, I hope this leaves your last week at Burroughs with a big smile on your face; a memory to cherish. I love each and every one of you with my whole heart, and I'll never forget you. you ALL inspire me. This has been my 5th year in show choir and I have to say this is my favorite family thus far, so thank you for everything. Have a good life, y'all; I'll carry you in my heart.
To Powerhouse 2020, I'm hella excited to see where next year goes. I'm looking forward to August, as a new series of adventures begin alongside a new year of experiences full of emotions. Stay tuned!!

Kodo - O-Daiko - HD (japanese drummers - Taiko - tambours géants Japon)
A Message to the Victims and Survivors of the Tohoku Earthquake & Tsunami :
Thanks to (Merci à)
Ōdaiko : One of the most memorable drums of many taiko ensembles is the ōdaiko (大太鼓). For many, the ōdaiko solo is the embodiment of power due to the size of the drum, the volume, and the endurance it takes to perform. The ōdaiko is the largest drum of all taiko, if not the entire world. The largest ōdaiko are too big to move and permanently reside inside a temple or shrine. Ōdaiko means big taiko, but within any group, it describes the largest drum in an ensemble, which could mean 12 inches (300 mm) in diameter or 12 feet (3.7 m) in diameter. Made from a single piece of wood, some ōdaiko come from trees that are hundreds of years old.
Kodō (鼓童?) is a professional taiko drumming troupe. Based on Sado Island, Japan, they have had a role in popularizing taiko drumming, both in Japan and abroad. They regularly tour Japan, Europe, and the United States.
Although the main focus of the performance is taiko drumming, other traditional Japanese musical instruments such as fue and shamisen make an appearance on stage as do traditional dance and vocal performance. Kodo's performance include pieces based on the traditional rhythms of regional Japan, pieces composed for Kodo by contemporary songwriters, and pieces written by Kodo members themselves. The numbers that Kodo perform can change from concert to concert. Kodo's performance normally lasts for about one hour and forty minutes.
In Japanese the word Kodo conveys two meanings: heartbeat the primal source of all rhythm and, read in a different way, the word can mean children of the drum, a reflection of Kodo's desire to play their drums simply, with the heart of a child.
Kodo strives to both preserve and re-interpret traditional Japanese performing arts. From worldwide tours and research trips, Kodo brings back to Sado world music and experiences which now exert a strong influence on the group's performances and compositions. They also collaborate with other artists and composers.
Since their debut at the Berlin Festival in 1981, Kodo have given over 3,100 performances on five continents, spending about a third of the year overseas, a third touring in Japan and a third resting and preparing new material on Sado Island.
SoulSation - Off Broadway Show - Boston, MA USA
SoulSation was a premier off Broadway production from the early 90s. I produced, managed, directed, and conceptualized this show. The Executive Producer was Larry Sneirson, aka Larry Lee Lewis.
This tape is a reference tape which would have proceeded a promotional tape. This tape was rather raw and had minimal editing, but it's still has some great memories.
The show performed in on Cape Cod and in the Boston and Greater Boston Area.
Please note that these are track shows with live vocals. No lip-sync here.

AEROSMITH - JADED - Just Push Play (2001) HiDef :: SOTW #201
Bergo '45 Song of the Week #201 - James' Pick for 5/7/17:
Jaded by Aerosmith off the album Just Push Play (2001)
Columbia Records
I recently mentioned to
a friend what I think this
song is actually about,
and he laughed at my
theory. So I took up his
challenge to stick my
neck out with this one :
In the lyrics for this
song, Steven Tyler
isn't speaking from the
standpoint of a lover
(his usual), nor of a
disinterested observer.
He is speaking here as
------------ a FATHER.
Yeah, laugh if you want.
But listen up first
and hear me out...
- James Lanier
This is a weekly dive into the musical mind of Bergo '45. Each week, a new song is chosen by a different member of the band. Check out the playlist to see all of the past selections. Take a chair, grab a towel and give it a listen....
Aerosmith is an American rock band, sometimes referred to as the Bad Boys from Boston and America's Greatest Rock and Roll Band. Their style, which is rooted in blues-based hard rock, has come to also incorporate elements of pop, heavy metal, and rhythm and blues, and has inspired many subsequent rock artists. They were formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1970. Guitarist Joe Perry and bassist Tom Hamilton, originally in a band together called the Jam Band, met up with vocalist/pianist/harmonicist Steven Tyler, drummer Joey Kramer, and guitarist Ray Tabano, and formed Aerosmith. In 1971, Tabano was replaced by Brad Whitford, and the band began developing a following in Boston.
They were signed to Columbia Records in 1972, and released a string of gold and platinum albums, beginning with their 1973 eponymous debut album, followed by Get Your Wings in 1974. In 1975, the band broke into the mainstream with the album Toys in the Attic, and their 1976 follow-up Rocks cemented their status as hard rock superstars. Two additional albums followed in 1977 and 1979. Their first five albums have since attained multi-platinum status. Throughout the 1970s, the band toured extensively and charted a dozen Hot 100 singles. By the end of the decade, they were among the most popular hard rock bands in the world and developed a loyal following of fans, often referred to as the Blue Army. However, drug addiction and internal conflict took their toll on the band, which led to the departures of Perry and Whitford in 1979 and 1981, respectively; they were replaced by Jimmy Crespo and Rick Dufay. The band did not fare well between 1980 and 1984, releasing the album Rock in a Hard Place, which was certified gold but failed to match their previous successes.
Perry and Whitford returned to Aerosmith in 1984 and the band signed a new deal with Geffen Records. After a comeback tour, the band recorded Done with Mirrors (1985), which won some critical praise but failed to come close to commercial expectations. It was not until the band's collaboration with rap group Run–D.M.C. in 1986, and the 1987 multi-platinum release Permanent Vacation, that they regained the level of popularity they had experienced in the 1970s. In the late 1980s and 1990s, the band scored several hits and won numerous awards for music from the multi-platinum albums Pump (1989), Get a Grip (1993), and Nine Lives (1997), and embarked on their most extensive concert tours to date. The band also became a pop culture phenomenon with popular music videos and notable appearances in television, film, and video games. Their comeback has been described as one of the most remarkable and spectacular in rock 'n' roll history. Additional albums followed in 2001, 2004, and 2012. Since 2001, the band has toured every year, except 2008. After 47 years of performing, the band continues to tour and record music, but is embarking on a farewell tour that will likely last several years, with the first leg of the tour planned for Europe in the spring and summer of 2017.
Aerosmith is the best-selling American hard rock band of all time, having sold more than 150 million records worldwide, including over 70 million records in the United States alone. With 25 gold albums, 18 platinum albums, and 12 multi-platinum albums, they hold the record for the most total certifications by an American band and are tied for the most multi-platinum albums by an American band. The band has scored 21 Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, nine number-one Mainstream Rock hits, four Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, and ten MTV Video Music Awards. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and were included among both Rolling Stone's and VH1's lists of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. In 2013, the band's principal songwriters, Tyler and Perry, were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
