Its primary attractions in the the winter are the enjoyable ski area located in the middle of town and the must experience snowmobile trail rides. In fact, the Red River ski area has the best snow making ability in New Mexico ... as the Red River runs through the town, providing water throughout the ski season.

Gila National Forest Overland Trip
The Gila National Forest and Wilderness Area in western New Mexico offers one of the best back country roads experiences that is available in the southwest United States. The wildlife is so abundant in this very well maintained and protected forest system. With it being so dry and the roads so well maintained, we didn't require 4x4 this time but we now know where to go for that type of experience in the future. Having been in the spring and fall, we found the fall season to be much greener and vibrant.
With the Mogollon winter gate still being closed, we went in through Reserve which actually turned out to be to our benefit. We were only in the pines for an hour and we were able to see elk, an owl and a bobcat all just before a beautiful sunset way up high in the pines. We had to help a forest employee who broke down deep in the woods. Hope all is good Amy. We stayed at Snow Lake Friday, a quiet lake on Saturday and south to Black Canyon on Sunday. We encountered 2 small twisters that were quite fun, one on the video and one on foot that hurt a little. We found a new waterfall and hiking area along the route as well. I have to say this area does have the most wildlife I have ever scene in one small area. Best bang for your buck in the southwest.
As always thank you for watching and sharing with your friends.

Displaced Mountian People
Living in Virginia: Iris Still blooms. With the state recovering from the chestnut blight, the stock market crash and the Great Depression in the early 1930s, it was thought that the creation of a national park would revive the spirit of Virginia. And, of no less importance, it would be a place where Washington's politicians could vacation without having to travel a great distance. As a result, almost 600 families were forced to move from their mountain homes so the Shenandoah National Park could be created. For two centuries these families had inhabited and cultivated the land. Former residents talk about what it was like to leave their mountain homes and how some label it progress while others reveal emotions still fresh and stinging.
Ryan Ragsdale for Epic Dream Job
Application for Ski.com ‘s Epic Dream Job!-
My name is Ryan Ragsdale and I am currently a wilderness guide for Bobcat Pass Wilderness Adventures bear Red River, New Mexico where I currently reside. I started skiing and being involved in other various outdoor activities when I was three years old. I was borne and raised in Canyon, TX.
.
.
I have actively participated in skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, wake-boarding, skateboarding, kneeboarding, hiking, camping, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, competitive shotgun sports and of course world traveling. I have been very blessed to see my fair share of the United States as well as Canada, Morocco, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, etc. in my travels. I feel like I truly fit the qualifications for the ideal candidate as I am an avid skier/adventurer/traveler. I have done a lot of skiing all over the states but have never had the pleasure of skiing abroad although I have always wanted to it’s just never worked out for me to be abroad during the winter months due to being busy with work as a wilderness guide and being in school at the time (graduate of WTAMU. Go Buffs!).
.
.
I absolutely love traveling the world and capturing footage and pictures of my travels and sharing them. I wish I could of provided a more eye catching video as other applicants have but as I said I am currently in the middle of traveling abroad as I would be doing if I was chosen for this opportunity of a lifetime. I would be overjoyed if I was chosen, so yeah... please pick me! ☺️????????⛷

Bald Eagle Adventure!

In this segment of On Location, Coyote and crew brave the wilds of Alaska in search of majestic Bald Eagles!
While there are more Bald Eagles in Alaska than any other state in the USA they can be quite difficult to film due to their incredible eyesight and extremely skittish behavior. Let’s just say sneaking up on an Eagle is far easier said than done! Oh and did we mention there are ice cold rivers and grizzly bears in the way? Yeah, this location will test one’s wilderness skills, that’s for sure!
To help take on this challenge of filming wild Eagles the crew hired professional wilderness guide Joe Ordenez and brought along a giant, and we do mean GIANT, 600mm camera lens to help extended their camera’s reach.
So will they be able to get the epic Eagle shot they’re after?
Get ready to find out on this wild Alaskan adventure!
Big thanks to Joe Ordonez for making this adventure possible! For information on his amazing guide services and lodging in Alaska please visit his website -

Solo Hiking the Lye Brook Wilderness - 2 Days in Vermont's Green Mountains
Want to hike with less crowds during peak season? For this adventure, we visit the Lye Brook Wilderness in Southern Vermont's Green Mountain National Forest. This was actually a loop hike that I managed to scrap together at the last minute, due to some bad weather intervening with my plans to finally hike Virginia's Shenandoah National Park. Luckily, Vermont had 2 days of beautiful sunny weather, so into the hatchback we went, for another 2 day adventure.
The Green Mountain National Forest is a 399,151 acre swath of land consisting of 8 Federal Wilderness Areas. These are areas with special protections to ensure a minimal impact from us pesky humans, including restrictions on trail maintenance. This tends to make for more rugged trails, which from my perspective, means for interesting terrain and less foot traffic. Increasingly, I've come to rely on this areas to increase my odds of a more secluded experience during the peak summer hiking season.
Our wilderness area of choice for this hike is the Lye Brook Wilderness, a 17,841 acre outside of Manchester, in Southern Vermont. Established in 1975 as Federal Wilderness in 1975, the majority of it's land resides on a high, 2,500 foot elevation plateau and is home to black bear, moose, pine martin, bobcat, deer, and various species of birds.
I left after work around 3pm on a Wednesday afternoon and managed to get the trusty VW parked at the trailhead by 9:30pm for a decent night's sleep. My plan was to do a loop hike and return to the car on day two, after visiting a couple deep woods ponds.
I began by following an old ATV trail to the Long Trail / Appalachian Trail to the Branch Pond Trail where I passed the Douglas Shelter on my way to the 48 acre Bourne Pond. Having gotten an early start and makiing good time, I explored the Bourne Pond camp site, but decided to keep moving along the Lye Brook Trail towards Stratton Pond, Vermont's largest body of water along the Long Trail. Things were made more interesting on the way there due to the damage caused in 2009 by a Microburst, which caused significant destruction and flooding along the Lye Brook Trail. Coupled with the fact that trails may only be maintained by hand tools within Federal Wilderness Areas, repair has been slow, but at this point it's at least passable.
Eventually I made it to the North Shore Tent Site to set up camp before heading up to the summit of Stratton Mountain with a lighter load. This is a fairly popular camp site with direct access from the adjacent Long Trail / Appalachian Trail, but luckily I was the first to arrive and grab a sweet spot by the pond. This was would be my first experience sharing an established tent site like this, but even I have to be social sometimes, .. I guess.
After setting up a decent bivouac site and cooking up some lunch, I headed South along the Long Trail towards the fire tower at Southern Vermont's highest peak, Stratton Mountain. At an elevation of 3,936 feet, the fire tower affords excellent views covering four states: the Green Mountains to the North, the White Mountains to the Northeast, the Berkshires to the South, and the Adirondacks to the West. Total Mileage for Day 1: 18 miles
After a good nights sleep, I headed back towards the car on day two along the more traveled Long Trail through another section of the Lye Brook Wilderness. Total Mileage for day two was a modest 8 miles, which I covered a little faster than expected due to the more well maintained trail conditions. Total trip mileage was 26 miles. Trip time start to finish, 29.5 hours. Again, a bit faster than I wanted, but it did leave me with extra time to explore Vermont my car looking for that perfect cheeseburger....
