Biscayne Bay National Park is located in Southern Florida. 95% of the park is underwater making it a paradise for scuba divers and snorkelers. We did a boat ride to Boca Chita Key, but needed to forego the water activities due to the weather. Good to see some cool dolphins on the ride back!

This video was taken on January 29, 2016 at Biscayne National Park. This was the first day that the park was offering a boat tour that takes you to Boca Chita Key. I believe that goes through May or June of 2016 (hopefully longer), so be sure to do that while you can!

Squall Hits Boca Chita Key Biscayne Bay Miami
Summertime weather in southeast Florida is usually wonderful. The trade winds which blow consistently most of the year die down and the waves flatten out. The silt settles out of the water and it can be amazingly transparent in areas which are not heavily polluted.
Although the global weather pattern calms, there is a lot of energy in the form of heat that causes localized thunderstorms. These can be very difficult to predict because they are not usually part of a larger weather pattern which can be detected moving your way days in advance. These pop up suddenly just about anywhere. If you are close enough to shore to get a cellphone signal, the national radar network is your best friend.
In the tropics and subtropical regions, squalls are high winds caused by microbursts associated with thunderstorms. 50 or even 60 MPH winds are not uncommon near the edge of the storm. This is chilled air falling with the rain, then being diverted horizontally when it reaches ground level, so its cold compared with the hot ground level afternoon air. One squall actually broke the aluminum frame on one of my bimini tops. I usually try to furl in the bimini tops and close hatches when I see thunderstorms approaching to avoid this kind of damage.
These things develop very fast. My timelapse cameras were just a couple hundred yards (or meters) away, but by the time I was sure we'd be hit by the squall, it was too late to go and save them.. This is one reason I wanted a faster boat. When crossing from Florida to the Bahamas, its best if you can leave early in the morning and get there by noon or one in the afternoon. After that, these squalls can pop up and the high wind creates huge waves when combined with the motion of the gulfstream current and deep water. Squalls are never nice, but once on the Bahama Banks, their effect on the waves seems a bit less intense. Crossing to or from the Bahamas at night is not recommended in the summertime because the heat of the water in the stream causes thunderstorms pretty much all night, every night out there. From shore, you can watch the lightning and only rarely get rained on. The gulfstream thunderstorms tend to remain confined to the area of the gulfstream current and rarely come ashore.

We ran into Greg on our boat ride out to do some snorkeling. He was scuba diving and seemed to be experienced in this area. We caught up with him after our ride back to shore to ask him about his experiences in Biscayne and other national parks.
