Houston: Prophetic City – What Houston Can Teach the Rest of the Country
This year’s Anton-Lippitt lecture will focus on the theme of community engagement, citizenship, and partnerships.
The open keynote event features Stephen L. Klineberg, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Rice University and the founding-director of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research.
Houston clearly exemplifies the trends that are refashioning the social and political landscape across America. The new high-tech, knowledge-based, fully global economy is generating mounting inequalities based primarily on access to quality education. At the same time, an epic transformation is underway, as this city and country, once predominantly composed of European nationalities, is rapidly becoming a microcosm of all the world’s ethnicities and religions. And as urban regions compete for the “knowledge workers” in the new economy, quality-of-place attributes now increasingly determine the fates of cities. The panel reviews the findings from 38 years of systematic surveys to show how the new realities are unfolding, to assess the changing attitudes and beliefs of the general public, and to consider the implications of these ongoing trends for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
Together with several panelists, Professor Klineberg will discuss how some destination cities have evolved toward inclusion and explore the institutions and strategies that support inclusive evolution.
Panelists include:
Angela Blanchard, Brown University
Amanda Edwards, Houston City Council
Armando Walle, Texas House of Representatives
Moderated by: Susan Moffitt, Director of the Taubman Center for American Politics and Policy

These Are The 10 SAFEST CITIES To Live In TEXAS

How TEXAS Taxes Retirees
Texas is such a great state. Southern, Mexican, Cajun, German culture all thrown into one place. Plus the diversity in landscape.
Arid in South Texas. Green rolling hills in the east. Deserts, beaches, mountains. Can it get any better? Absolutely fantastic.
Just to set the record straight, there ain't no saguaros in texas You need to go to AZ to see those.
But taxes in Texas are not nearly as favorable as one would think. Yes, no income tax. That's awesome.
But property and sales taxes are high.
I remember when we lived in South Texas getting hammered by property tax. We had come from Virginia where property taxes were low.
All of sudden having these huge property taxes was a shock to the system for sure.
Texas definitely offsets it with its NO income tax. But then you throw a high sales tax in the mix and you realize Texas is not nearly the panacea many make it out to be from a tax perspective.
Ideally, you'd want to retire to a place that is low in sales and property tax, even if they had an income tax. You can do a lot of proactive planning to minimize the income tax. But there is little you can do from a property and sales tax perspective.
Still Texas is better than most. You can get the wonderful culture thrown in for free too! Hard to beat.

Gunman kills two after opening fire at Texas church service
A man pulled out a shotgun at a Texas church service and fired on worshippers Sunday, killing two people before he was shot to death by congregants who fired back, police said.
Authorities at a Sunday evening news conference praised the two congregants who opened fire as part of a volunteer security team at West Freeway Church of Christ in White Settlement. It was unclear if the two people who were killed were the two who shot at the gunman.
This team responded quickly and within six seconds, the shooting was over. Two of the parishioners who were volunteers of the security force drew their weapons and took out the killer immediately, saving untold number of lives, said Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who also hailed the state's gun laws.
Britt Farmer, senior minister of the church, said, We lost two great men today, but it could have been a lot worse.
Authorities said there were more than 240 parishioners in the West Freeway Church at the time of the shooting.

How Much You Need To Earn To Afford Rent In Each State
How much you need to earn to afford rent in each state. According to BUSINESS INSIDER, the demand for rental apartments is at its highest since the 1960s. There are a few reasons for why that is, one being that Millennials, the largest generation since baby boomers, are desperate to buy homes. Another reason could be that many Americans, especially poorer people, “haven’t felt the effects of the economic recovery, and may not be able to rustle up the funds for a down payment,” BUSINESS INSIDER reports. Many are struggling to find homes.

Summary:
The Average: THRILLIST writes that according to the NATIONAL LOW INCOME HOUSING COALITION study, the average wage needed to rent a two-bedroom home in the States is $20.30/hour
Renting In California: If you want to move to California and plan on renting a two-bedroom place, you best hope you’re at least making $29.00 an hour. We can probably assume it's because of the great weather and all the awesome stuff you can do there. Disneyland, anyone?
Renting In Alabama: If you aren't up for the hustle and bustle of LA, maybe consider moving to Alabama, where you need to earn almost half the rate of California. In order to get a 2-bedroom, you’d have to make about $14.00 an hour.
Renting In New York. The Big Apple is another expensive city. In fact, New York has a reputation for having expensive apartments that tend to be the size of your current kitchen. You’d need to make about $27.00 an hour for a two-bedroom.
Renting In Iowa: Another state that doesn’t require a large amount of hourly rate is Iowa. You’d need to make $14.00 an hour to afford a place with two-bedrooms!
Renting In Hawaii: Hawaii is amazing for vacations, but after seeing that you’d have to make about $34.00 an hour to afford the rent there, we’re good with just vacationing there for a week or so.
Renting In Maryland: The State of Maryland is also pretty up there with New York City. You’d have to make $27.00 an hour in order to have the opportunity to rent a 2-bedroom.
Renting In Texas: The lone star state is pretty decent when it comes to renting. You'd only need to make $18.00 to get a two bedroom place. Heck, with the barbeque, ranching, and football, that doesn't sound so bad!
Renting In Nevada: If you want to live near Las Vegas, then you're going to have to make a decent amount of money. It's $18.00 an hour for a two bedroom place. Sure, it would be cool to live close to Sin City, but then again... what else is there to do in Nevada?
Renting In Florida. Not sure why you'd want to live in the Australia of the United States (just kidding, we love you Florida), but if you do, then you'll have to make $19.96 an hour. We can get on board with the good weather and great Cuban food, but we're not so sure about the alligators.
Renting In Arkansas. We had to google other names for Arkansas because we honestly don't know much about it. What we do know about the natural state is that it's really cheap to rent there. You'll only need to make about $13.00 an hour to rent a two bedroom place! Cool, you can... go see the art at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
Renting In West Virginia. A state that's kind of in the north and cheap is good ol' West Virginia. If you only make $13.00 an hour, you too can live in the second state named Virginia in the entire U-S of A. Speaking of which...
Renting In Virginia. We guess this is... East Virginia? Nevertheless, to live in the frustratingly named state you'll need to make about $22.00 an hour. Wow, that's a big jump from its Western counterpart! We can only assume it's that way because Virginia is by the sea.
Renting In Massachusetts. You wanna live in Boston with all the other wicked smart pats fans? Well, for the pleasure of being within the same state as Fenway Park, you'll need to make at least $26.00 an hour. Sounds like a whole lot, but the city is beautiful, it's rife with history and the clam chowder– to die for.

Episode 23: Everything is Bigger in Texas
Texas has always been great for business, but in the last ten years large companies and small business have continued to grow with a net migration of 1.4 million people moving to this amazing state. If Texas would be a stand-alone country it would be the tenth-largest economy in the world. Texas has favorable tax laws and it’s very business friendly.
Andrew and Jessica explain why you don’t necessarily have to start a business in the town you live in; you can move, find the best place to start and Texas offers many cities that can give you the entrepreneurial boost you were looking for. Small business, professional services, and big enterprises can benefit from the large population currently established in Texas.
