London Booster by David Cerny
Czech sculptor David Cerny is to unveil his first major, public commission in London for over a decade. The London Booster consists of a double-decker London bus manufactured in 1957, which Cerny has fitted with enormous mechanical arms allowing it to do press-ups. The work has been created to coincide with London hosting the Olympics and will be on display outside the Business Design Centre in Islington, which will be transformed into Czech House for the duration of the games.
The bus will move up and down to varying heights and angles of elevation and will provide additional video and audio content through the windows which are made from a continuous television screen. The complex engineering required to build this monumental moving piece has taken six months of planning and construction. Cerny comments:
The obsession with sport, the frenzy it generates, sometimes even ending in street war and regularly in a dependence on the activity, always amazed me. And the only sport which I'm able to watch passively is pole dancing. Although objectively speaking, I'm quite sporty: biking, swimming, flying, certainly I would not call myself an athlete. I'm probably obtaining dopamine from other physical sources. Press-ups are a particular physical exercise which every athlete does, but they also form part of a military drill and sometimes are forced on prisoners as punishment.
When I was approached by the architects of the Czech House to work on a piece, I took the challenge and, I hope, besides its monumentality and humour, the London Booster shows a certain ambivalence and irony
London Booster will be on display from the 24th July 2012 in conjunction with Czech House and its 17 days of sport, culture and entertainment at the Business Design Centre and officially opens on 27 July at 10 am. Czech House is run by the Czech Olympic Committee with the support of many institutional and business partners from the Czech Republic.
The completion of this ambitious project has been made possible through the generous support of Andrej Babiš of Agrofert Holding. After its return to Prague, it will be housed on a specially constructed plinth outside the Agrofert Headquarters accessible to the public.

Double Decker Does Pushups
Czech artist David Cerny unveiled his sculpture of a big red double decker bus, nicknamed the London Booster, performing push-ups with the help of an engine powering a pair of robotic arms.
Czech artist bounces politicians
There goes the neighbourhood; a Czech artist has removed from show his map of Europe in stereotype. It has been hanging in the atrium of the European Council headquarters in Brussels since the start of the Czech Republic EU presidency in January.
David Cerny said this is because he objects to change in government back home, after a parliamentary confidence vote: For me the Czech Presidency basically ended the moment the government was 'de-installed' in this way and I don't want to collaborate with the new government, which is actually put together with old communists. The newly-named prime minister is -- used to be -- a member of the communist party.
On Tuesday Prime Minister Jan Fischer will make his first official trip to Brussels since taking office. It is up in the air whether he or President Vaclav Klaus will lead the summit closing the EU presidency in June.
After Cerny's official artwork presidency sparked controversy, the artist waived his fee, so he is free to take it, a Prague official said. With tongue-in-cheek artistic license, the work 'Entropa' attributed national characteristics to the 27 EU member states. It attracted unusually large crowds.

London art installation has bus doing push-ups
(24 Jul 2012) SCRIPT
With the Olympics starting this week, everybody is in the mood for sport, including the London buses.
Outside the Czech Republic House in London, a typical double-decker bus was doing push-ups.
It was part of an installation created by Czech artist David Cerny.
I was asked by the architect of the Czech Olympic team if I would be willing to collaborate or to cooperate with the Czech House, Czech Olympic House, and I was thinking about it so that was one of the first ideas that came up in my mind, said the artist on Tuesday.
Cerny and a group of 15 helpers turned the 607-ton vehicle into a healthy and sportive bus.
It took about six months to customise the 1957 bus that came from Holland and uses engines and moving arms to do the push-ups.

This double-decker bus is the work of Czech artist David Černý for Czech House at London 2012. I thought this video just needed the right kind of music for motivation.

Czech artwork creates stir across Europe
A sculpture celebrating the Czech presidency of the European Union has become embroiled in controversy. It features symbols of E.U. member countries -- but Romania is represented as a vampiric theme park and Bulgaria is portrayed as a Turkish toilet system.
