We had to leave Kota Kinabalu and so we headed to Sandakan in preparation for our trip to the Kinabatangan River. As we didn’t leave until the next day, we arrived and dropped our stuff and then set about exploring the city. We saw the things to do in Sandakan and enjoyed going up the heritage walk to the observation deck, although our view was rather obscured. We then headed to the Agnes Keith House before stopping by the lovely English Teahouse (of course!). After this we spent the evening at the waterfront before heading back to our hostel to turn in for the night.

SANDAKAN - Borneo, Sabah, Malaysia
Sandakan formerly known at various times as Elopura, is a town in Sabah, Malaysia. It is the second largest town in Sabah after Kota Kinabalu. It is located on the east coast of the state in the administrative centre of Sandakan Division and was the former capital of British North Borneo. The town has an estimated population of 157,330 while the surrounding municipal area has a total population of 396,290.
Before the founding of Sandakan, Sulu Archipelago was the source of dispute between Spain and the Sultanate of Sulu for economic dominance in the region. Sandakan began to prosper when the British North Borneo Company (BNBC) started to build a new settlement in 1879, developing it into an active commercial and trading centre as well as making it the main administrative centre for North Borneo.
Sandakan is one of the main ports for oil, tobacco, coffee, sago, and timber exports. Other economic activities include fishing, ship building, eco-tourism, and manufacturing. Among the tourist attractions in Sandakan are Sandakan Heritage Museum, Sandakan Cultural Festival, Sandakan War Memorial, Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary, Turtle Islands National Park, and Gomantong Caves.

Borneo 2017 | TRAVELLING VLOG - KOTA KINABALU, SEPILOK ORANGUTANS, TURTLE ISLAND, SANDAKAN
If you're new to my channel, then welcome - if not, welcome back!
I'm currently on a huge adventure and probably somewhere quite random as you read this. On 28 April 2017, I left home with my friend Sarah. Our goal is to spend 12 months working in Australia on the Australia Holiday Working visa. On our way to the cities of Kangeroos and Shrimps on the Barbies (no offence), we'll be stopping off and visiting cities across the world.
Kuala Lumpur was amazing but I was so excited to get on the plane to Borneo… somewhere I had only dreamt of visiting. We made the most of our visit and visited so many places. We started in Kota Kinabalu and stayed at the Grand Borneo hotel, attached to 1 Borneo. We visited KK city and the following day hoped on a plane to Sandakan. We went straight to Sepilok to see the Orangutangs (Sepilok Orangutang Rehabilitation Centre) and WOW it was incredible. After a day in Sepilok, we got a taxi to the harbour at Crystal Quest and went to Turtle Island, where we spent the night with 14 other people on our own little island. We watched turtles lay their eggs and even got to release a 72 baby turtles. I helped a little turtle on his way and names him Norris. The following day, we headed back to Sandakan and visited the markets and the small town and then jumped back on a plane to KK.
Uploads will be at the end of each city stopover during the year.

Malaysia - Sandakan Hotspot Eco Tours
Flying from Kota Kinabalu (KK) to Sandakan is easy, fast and inexpensive. This tour was very well organized by Mr Lai of Sandakan Hotspot Eco-Tours. Leaving from KK early morning on day 1, I was met as well as other tourists at Sandakan airport by Hadi, our professional and agreeable tour-guide. After a quick breakfast at a local cafe, we arrived at the Sepilok Orang-Utan Reahabilitation Center, one of only 4 such centers in the world. You get to see orang-utans coming at feeding time on their free will as they are free in nature. You also get to see the newly rescued orang-utans getting some training to be able to survive later in the wild. After a great visit there, we had a nice buffet lunch at a local restaurant and our comfortable A/C bus took us to the Gomantong Caves. We were very fortunate to visit during the 6 weeks a year when bird nests collectors are at work. It gave an extra interest to this huge cathedral-type of cave. Then, we drove to the Sungai Kinabatangan, Sabah's longest river. After checking-in at Borneo Natural Bilit Sukau Resort where I was quite surprised at how nice the bungalows were: I did not need the A/C as the cool temperature and fans where just right. Nice traditional style but clean and spacious. Rooms with personality! After a quick snack, we went for a late afternoon river cruise to spot many types of birds, proboscis monkeys, macaques, and perhaps crocodiles and pygmy elephants. You realize then that your eyes are much better than your camera at distinguishing the creatures often far away and in the shade! After this 2h1/2 hour trip we came back at the resort for a buffet dinner with the many other tourists (most backpackers-type) that came for a day tour or overnight like I did. Shortly after dinner, we were invited to join a night walk around the property to see some animals sleeping like insects and birds. After a great night of sleep, I got up early again, this time to go to a 6am river tour, giving us more chance to see the wild animals clinging to the jungle bordering the river with infamous palm oil trees fields beyond! I let you watch the video to see what animals we did see … After a breakfast on our river tour return, a big bus took a lot of us to diverse destinations, sometimes to connect with other buses. Back at Sandakan airport mid-day, I was back in KK by 4pm on day2. A busy but really fun 2-day tour!
I recommend and thank Mr Lai of Sandakan Hotspot Eco-Tours for his support and our great guide, Hadi. Filmed in August 2018.

You've never seen this part of SANDAKAN! Borneo, Malaysia (WeWillNomad)
Sandakan was founded in the 15th Century during the Bruneian Empire but was completely destroyed during the Second World War. Although today it is a modern city, it has very few tourist specific landmarks to visit. Nevertheless, the city is very pedestrian-friendly with a lovely 2.5km heritage trail past some significant landmarks and with great views. The friendly and good-natured people are what really make Sandakan worth a short stay.
We spent a day exploring this often-overlooked city in Sabah.
To find more info on Sandakan see our blog:
Most people, however, only pass through Sandakan to see the famous Borneo Orangutans at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre which is less than 20kms outside of Sandakan and rescues and rehabilitates Orangutans.

The world is your home. What time will you be home for dinner?
Travel Cheap to the Borneo Jungle, near Sandakan. Sabah, Malaysia, for under $20 Day. Visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center while you are in Borneo. This is an uncaged sanctuary for orangutans who have lost their jungle habitat from palm oil deforestation.
Borneo is one of the largest islands in the world. Borneo is south of Vietnam between Singapore and the Philippines. Borneo is so large that it includes parts of Indonesia and Malaysia and all of Brunei.
As you fly over the Borneo Jungle, it looks like over 50% of the old growth jungle has been cleared for palm oil farms. I asked a palm oil farming engineer I met on the bus about it and he said the Malaysian government will only allow 50% of the jungle to be cleared. But from the air it looks like it is already more than 50% palm oil farms. Conservation organizations have been reporting on this for some time, but the international community continues to consume palm oil for cosmetics and other products. Please read labels and use products that do not contain palm oil.
You may want to come visit the Borneo Jungle before it is gone. I see very little political desire to save this jungle.
Things to Do: Although I came to see the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center, I also really enjoyed the Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, and The Rainforest Discovery Centre. The owner of the Sun Bear sanctuary is a wealth of knowledge about how to save the jungle. Other than the scuba diving in Sipadan, these sanctuaries were my favorite days in Borneo.
The Proboscis Monkey’s stole the show. The orangutans are amazing creatures, but don’t miss the proboscis monkeys. Also, although I only spent a few hours at the Sun Bear Sanctuary, my friend Charles Hummel spent the whole day there and got some amazing pictures. My camera was giving me trouble and Charles was kind enough to allow you to see some of his photos.
Accommodations and Food: The Sepilok Jungle Resort is right across the street from the orangutan sanctuary, and next door to the sun bear sanctuary. It is also only a few blocks to the rainforest discovery and the resort will arrange for your travel to see the proboscis monkey sanctuary. A private hotel room at the Sepilok Jungle Resort goes for $41/night and a hostel dorm goes for about $10/night there. Breakfast is included and lunch or dinner is about $3-4 each. There is a swimming pool on the premises which is a nice treat after a day walking in the jungle. The hotel was booked upon my arrival, so I stayed in the dorms and my cost of living including food but not excursions, was just under $20 per day.
Sandakan: I didn’t spend any time in the city of Sandakan, but friends did. Hostels are $7, hotel rooms are $17, and meals are about $3. A furnished townhouse just outside Sandakan is $26/night on Airbnb.com. The cost of living estimates below are based on Sandakan rather than the Sepilok Jungle Resort.
Transportation: I flew from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan for $44 which gave me a nice view of Kinabalu Mountain and confirmed the same level of deforestation I saw in other parts of Malaysia. The taxi to the Sepilok Jungle Resort was $12. After visiting all the sanctuaries, I caught the bus to Semporana for $8, which took 5 hours. You catch the bus right up the street from the Sepilok Jungle Resort. Just ask for directions.

Our DREAM destination... | Exploring Sandakan, Borneo | Travel Vlog, tips and tricks | S02-E01
Welcome Back! If you liked the video you know what to do! #borneo
After 2 days of planning and a very last minute decision, we arrived in Sandakan Borneo. Now, this wasn't the plan, we were originally heading straight to Bali however in being so close to Borneo and given it's a destination on both our bucket lists we had to do it!
As you heard we chose this destination over Sabah simply because it was closer to the tours and attractions we wanted to visit. However it is less touristy, fewer restaurants and limited activities to do within Sandakan. #sandakan
If we had the time we definitely would have visited the nearby islands, and we strongly recommend you look into doing it. Turtle island looks and sounds amazing! Tours are typically 2 days long, where at night you can see the sea turtles nesting on shore and then racing out to sea! Sadly we were unable to find any 1-day tours, we will definitely be keeping an eye out if there is anywhere else that has something similar en route! #traveltips
Despite the lack of activities, many of the tours we found start from around this area or were cheaper as they weren't picking you up from the main hub at Sabah- Kota Kinabula international airport. So in just a short 30-minute drive and you arrive at the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary where captive orangutans are reintroduced into the wild. Then you also have the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre which is not far from the Orangutan Sanctuary.
We are heading on our own tour in a couple days and we can't wait to experience Borneo and the incredible wildlife and animals with local guides who will take us to all the best spots, stay tuned for that!

Borneo Sun Bear Sanctuary - Sandakan Malaysia
Today we will taking you to the sun bear sanctuary in sandakan borneo.
To enter the sun bear sanctuary is only around 30-35 ringgit for non Malaysians, this works out to be roughly around 6-7 English pounds which is very affordable and fair.
The sun bear sanctuary is right next to the orangutan sanctuary so you can visit both sanctuary's in the same day which is great.
There is around 40+ sun bears to find in the enclosure, they are very hard to spot because they are pretty small and because the enclosure is pretty big you will need a sharp eye to spot them.
If it happens to rain the bears often climb the trees to get away from the wet Forrest floor, which gives you great photo opportunity.
The walking dead to spot them from is quite high up so you are looking down to give you the best vantage spotting point. There are also some telescopes dotted around that you can get closer looks of the sun bears from.
Sandakan has fantastic animal sanctuary's and we would highly recommend you visit the orangutans and sun bear sanctuary in 1 day for a very reasonable price.
