Places to see in ( Otley - UK )
Places to see in ( Otley - UK )
Otley is a market town and civil parish at a bridging point on the River Wharfe in the City of Leeds metropolitan borough in West Yorkshire, England. Historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire.
Otley is in lower Wharfedale on the A660 which connects it to Leeds. The parish church (All Saints) has 7th-century origins. Otley lies 28 miles (45 km) south-west of York, 10 miles (16 km) north-west of Leeds, 10 miles (16 km) north-east of Bradford, and 196 miles (315 km) from London. The town lies in lower Wharfedale at a bridging point of the River Wharfe where there is a seven arched medieval bridge and is surrounded by arable farmland. The historic town developed on the south bank of the Wharfe, but in the 20th century Otley expanded north of the river, to include new developments at Newall and the Weston Estate.
The south side of the valley is dominated by a gritstone escarpment overlooking Otley called the Chevin and to the north is Newall Carr. In 1944, Major Le G.G.W. Horton Fawkes of Farnley Hall donated 263 acres (1.1 km²) of land on the Chevin to the people of Otley. To the east and west of Otley are flooded gravel pits, where sand and gravel have been extracted in the 20th century. The gravel pits to the east at Knotford Nook are a noted birdwatching site. Those to the west are devoted to angling and sailing.
The main roads through the town are the A660 to the south east, which connects Otley to Bramhope, Adel and Leeds city centre, and the A65 to the west, which goes to Ilkley and Skipton. The A6038 heads to Guiseley, Shipley and Bradford, connecting with the A65. To Harrogate, the A659 heads east to the A658, which is the main Bradford–Harrogate road. Otley bus station is run by West Yorkshire Metro and services are operated by First West Yorkshire, TLC, Utopia and Harrogate Coach Travel. There are local services connecting the town and outlying areas. Otley railway station opened in 1865 and closed in March 1965; the town bypass follows the line of the old railway.
Otley has a diverse range of cultural organisations. It has five active Morris dance sides, the Wharfedale Wayzgoose (Border), The Buttercross Belles (Ladies Northwest), Flash Company (Border, Molly, Appalachian & Clog), Hellz Bellz (Contemporary) and Kitchen Taps (Appalachian Step). Drama groups include the Otley Community Players, Otley Youth Theatre (OY), and a thriving arts centre in the former courthouse. There is a poetry society, which meets monthly in the Black Horse Hotel. The town has a Brass Band who perform at many events in the town.
Otley hosts the annual Otley Folk Festival in September, a Victorian Fayre in December, a carnival in June, and, in May, what is reputed to be the oldest one day agricultural show in the country. This celebrated its bicentenary in 2009. There is a beer festival, organised by the church, in November. Otley once vied with a handful of towns for the distinction of having the most pubs per head of population in England.
( Otley - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Otley . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Otley - UK

Seven Stones Plaza at the Spring Mountain Visitor Gateway on the Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest
Richard Arnold from the Nuwuvi working group describes the symbolism of the Seven Stones Sacred Plaza at the Spring Mountain Visitor Gateway on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest in Nevada. The Seven Stones Plaza is one unique area at the Spring Mountain Visitor Gateway (SMVG) that celebrates indigenous people—seven Southern Paiute tribes known collectively as Nuwuvi (or “the people”)—and their long-standing ancestral relationship with their creation place in the Spring Mountains. The plaza includes a compelling Nuwuvi welcome statement on an interpretive panel that invites visitors to open their senses and truly experience the land. The plaza’s center stone represents Nuvagantu (a point in the Spring Mountains landscape), the Nuwuvi creation place, displaying a handprint marking the presence of the Creator. The seven stones surrounding the center stone symbolize each Southern Paiute tribe across four states, Nevada, Arizona, California, and Utah. The plaza’s meandering rainwater channels depict the rivers and trails on the landscape to reinforce the never-ending connection between each tribe and the center of the world (or center stone). According to tribal elders, Nuwuvi have been a part of this landscape since the beginning of time. The land is considered sacred and treated as a close relative that has feelings and a purpose. The Mountain Institute (an international non-profit organization dedicated to conserving mountain ecosystems and empowering people in mountain communities) and Portland State University have worked with the USDA Forest Service to involve Nuwuvi in strengthening their cultural ties to the Spring Mountains and providing input into resource management. The cooperative effort has also helped develop opportunities for visitors to learn about the indigenous people’s connection and stewardship of these mountains. Developing the SMVG provided an ideal opportunity to engage the Nuwuvi Working Group (tribally-appointed representatives from the seven Southern Paiute tribes) to tell the story of the mountains. The collaboration between Nuwuvi and the Forest Service illustrates mutual respect and enduring appreciation for the land. This collaboration was an important aspect during the SMVG planning and design phases that sparked the development of the Seven Stones Plaza and enhanced additional Native American features within the visitor center, along interpretive trails, and in campgrounds and picnic areas. Forest Service architecture and engineering design teams integrated the Nuwuvi Working Group’s wisdom into the conceptualization and creation of the Seven Stones Plaza. The concept emerged from ethnographic research conducted by Nuwuvi Working Group members, whose interviews of Nuwuvi tribal elders and other key knowledge holders reaffirmed Nuwuvi’s strong and ongoing relationship with the Spring Mountains landscape. Filmed and edited by Charity Parks.
Poppy's Tour Of Scarborough Castle | Yorkshire Tour 2019
We visit Scarborough Castle. We parked at the sea front and walked up to the castle. What a long way up! There is actually a car park by the caste too. Brilliant views all around from the castle.
Scarborough Castle stands on a massive promontory of rock that rises above the North Sea. Its 12th-century great tower is the centrepiece of a royal castle begun by Henry II. It became one of the greatest royal fortresses in England and figured prominently in national events during the Middle Ages. Its buildings are mostly relatively recent additions to a site which, as a natural fortress, has been intermittently inhabited and fortified for nearly 3,000 years.
We do Motorhome Reviews, Motorhome Days Out, Help, Hints and Tips on Motorhomes, Motorhome Tours in the UK and Europe, we visit Motorhome Shows, and spend over a third of our year living in a motorhome. In fact all things motorhome!

Harrogate The Valley Gardens Fire in the play area -10th-October 2011
A few vandals decide that they would set fire to a climbing frame for children in the Valley Gardens. A well used and loved area for all children under 12 in the area and visitors alike . What kind of a mentality would do this ???

Skipton, lies on the far reaches of the Western Yorkshire Dales and is known as the Gateway to the Dales.
A bustling market town on the banks of the Leeds/Liverpool Canal, Skipton has recently been voted the ‘Happiest Place to live in the UK’ thanks to its fantastic schools and quality lifestyle.
And, with homes in high demand in the area, we thought we’d take a little look at what makes it such a popular place.
HISTORY AND HERITAGE
Skipton is awash with history with perhaps its most famous attraction being its 900 year old castle which holds a commanding view down the town’s main street. Stunningly preserved it’s a great place to learn a little about the town and its history. The canal also played a significant part in the town’s heritage with many mills littering the canalside during the industrial revolution with a handful remaining today. These can be seen when walking around the town or from the water on one of the many canal boat trips that can be taken from the centre of town, a great way to appreciate what an important part the canal plays in the towns past, present and future.
SHOPPING AND SHEEP
A popular market is still held in the town several times a week showcasing local produce and essential items. Shopping in Skipton remains a delight with a fantastic selection of independent shops alongside high street favourites. Residents are also well catered for with butchers, bakers and other essential retailers and businesses operating in the town to ensure everyday life is facilitated with ease in this rural community. With Skipton literally translating into ‘sheep town’ from its Anglo Saxon name ‘Sceap tun’ it will come as no surprise to discover that each year ‘Sheep Day’ takes place celebrating the town’s heritage and providing a great day out for all the family.
EXPLORING NEARBY
In addition to the beautiful town, Skipton’s surrounding area also has much to offer. The Bolton Abbey Estate, home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, lies close by and is a wonderful place for walks, picnics and enjoying the great outdoors. And, for rail enthusiast, the Embsay and Bolton Steam Railway is a joy to behold as you hop aboard for a trip back in time. And, of course, there are endless views, walks and corners of the Yorkshire Dales to discover epitomising the beauty of England’s largest county.
FAMILIES AND THE FUTURE
For families choosing to make Skipton their home, there is a fantastic selection of primary and secondary schools. Indeed, some of the secondary schools are extremely high performing giving parent’s confidence in the security of their children’s future. And, as Skipton continues to be a thriving community and tourist attraction, we think that the future looks positive for this popular Yorkshire town, making it a great place to call home. Why not visit our Airedale Lea development in the village of Eastburn, just minutes’ drive from Skipton. A simply perfect place to be.
