Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Henri Rousseau, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Gustav Klimt, Paul Signac, Piet Mondrian, Amedeo Modigliani, Vincent van Gogh, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Juan Gris, Paul Klee, Edvard Munch, Wassily Kandinsky und Kasimir Malewitsch.

Exhibition celebrates Hieronymus Bosch and his disciples
(10 Nov 2016) LEAD IN:
An exhibition tracing the influence of Netherlands painter Hieronymus Bosch has opened in Berlin.
Regarded as one of the most prominent Dutch artists of the late Middle Ages, Bosch painted demonic figures, monsters, angels and saints.
The 'Hieronymus Bosch and his world of images in the 16th and 17th century celebrates the 500th anniversary of the death of the artist.
STORY-LINE
Monsters, devils and dark creatures have taken over the Gemaldegalerie museum in the German capital.
At the centre of a new exhibition stands a few original paintings and drawings by Hieronymus Bosch, the Dutch artist known for his dark visions of humanity and hell.
The works are placed alongside paintings by artists he inspired.
We intend to explore what we have called 'the phenomenon of Bosch.' That includes the incredible spread of his world of images after his death through copies and variants of his works all the way through to the middle of the 17th century, says Stephan Kemperdick, one of the curators of the exhibition.
Bosch was born in the Duchy of Brabant, in what is now the Netherlands, around 1450.
Not much is know about his early life or his training as an artist.
He only left behind a handful of paintings, drawings and prints. But he was still hugely influential in the period after his death says Ina Dinter, the co-curator of the exhibition.
Hieronymus Bosch was the most important Dutch artists of the start of the 16th century. His images put him on the border between the late gothic movement and the renaissance, she says.
The exhibition marks the 500th anniversary of the death of Bosch in 1516.
There is not much cheerful art here.
The paintings are dark, filled with monsters, devils, blood drinking creatures and a number of versions of hell.
Bosch and the artists he inspired clearly took an almost perverse pleasure in creating new types of monsters, devils and ways to inflict pain on people, says Dinter.
In Bosch's paintings and drawings, and also in the works by his followers, you can really see the great pleasure they took in creating these creatures.
A contemporary art lover might draw parallels with the surrealism art movement from the 20th century.
The creatures seem surreal, and many of the surrealists painters were inspired by Bosch, according to Kemperdick.
But there is one big difference, the paintings by the deeply Christian Bosch are not about having fun.
The surrealists wanted to free the body and the soul from the concept of sins. Bosch's world of images are actually quite moralising. These dark visions warn people, to not give in to their sinful pleasures: the debauchery, the lust and the sexuality. That will bring destruction. So in that way the pictures are very conservative, Christian and moralising, Kemperdick explains.
The exhibition 'Hieronymus Bosch and his world of images in the 16th and 17th century opens to the public on November 11, 2016 and runs through 19 February, 2017.
