Sino-Africa Joint Research Center (SAJOREC)
Introduction of Sino-Africa Joint Research Center (SAJOREC)
Sino-Africa Joint Research Center (SAJOREC) is a talent cultivation and scientific research institute aided by the Chinese government on the basis of the exchange of official letters between Chinese and Kenyan Governments. The headquarters of SAJOREC covers a land area of 40 acres on Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) main campus in Juja, Kiambu County in Kenya, and with total building area of 4,300 m2.
The infrastructure in SAJOREC comprises of expert accommodation apartment, laboratory building, training and conference center, a modern herbarium. The center also has a 37-acre botanical garden (JKUAT Botanical Garden). SAJOREC has been equipped with modern research equipments purchased by Sino-Africa Joint Research Center, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SAJOREC-CAS). JKUAT is responsible for day-to-day management while SAJOREC-CAS plays a key technical and advisory role in the running of SAJOREC. The implementing agencies of SAJOREC on China and Kenya sides are Wuhan Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, respectively. copy@docsbay.net
History of Sino-Africa Joint Research Center (SAJOREC)
The idea of a Chinese-aided China-Africa Joint Research Centre in Kenya, where African and Chinese researchers would conduct joint research, was conceived during deliberations between the author and his Chinese research counterpart, Prof. Wang Qing Feng, in 1999. The initiative has since come to fruition, thanks to long cordial ties between Kenya and China that can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), when the famous navigator Zheng He reached the shores of Kenya.
Among the many benefits of the Sino-Kenya ties is the planned establishment of the JKUAT Botanical Garden and Sino-Africa Joint
SAJOREC organizes annual forums of African and Chinese scientists dubbed the ‘Sino-Kenyan Scientists’ Workshops’. The first of these forums was held in August 2013, in Nairobi. The workshop brought together JKUAT scientists and their counterparts from 11 leading Universities and research institutes in China.
Nanjing
Nanjing ( listen; Chinese: 南京; pinyin: Nánjīng; Wade–Giles: Nan-ching) is the capital of Jiangsu province in Eastern China. It has a prominent place in Chinese history and culture, having been the capital of China for several periods. Its present name means Southern Capital and was widely romanized as Nankin and Nanking until the pinyin language reform, after which Nanjing was gradually adopted as the standard spelling of the city's name in most languages that use the Roman alphabet.
Located in the lower Yangtze River drainage basin and Yangtze River Delta economic zone, Nanjing has long been one of China's most important cities. Having been the capital city of six different dynasties since 3 A.D., it is recognized as one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. It was the capital of Wu during the Three Kingdoms Period, and the capital of the Republic of China prior to its flight to Taiwan during the Chinese Civil War. Nanjing is also one of the fifteen sub-provincial cities in the People's Republic of China's administrative structure, enjoying jurisdictional and economic autonomy only slightly less than that of a province. Nanjing has long been a national centre of education, research, transport networks and tourism. The city will host the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics.
