The First World War and Newfoundland’s Economy
This video explores the effects that the First World War had on Newfoundland and Labrador’s economy. In the short-term there was prosperity, triggered by wartime spending and a suddenly booming fishery. That was followed by years of debilitating debt – debt that was largely brought on by the staggering costs of raising and maintaining the Newfoundland Regiment.
Buchans NL - Wintertime Aerials - March 2018
The Town of Buchans, located in the centre of the island of Newfoundland has a rich history of mining, coupled with a strong sense of community. It is situated on the northwest shore of Red Indian Lake on the Buchans River.
Over its 56-year mine life, the Buchans mine produced 16.2 million tonnes averaging 14.50% zinc, 7.56% lead, 1.33% copper, 126 grams per tonne silver and 1.37 grams gold per tonne. Historically the Buchans deposits ranked among the world’s most prolific high-grade deposits.
Today the population has dwindled from 2500 to approximately 650, however it has a proud heritage of mining and its former residents can be found living and working, literally all over the world.

The Memory Store: The first public library in Newfoundland and Labrador...
Anne Walsh, treasurer of the Basilica Museum and Historical Committee, describes the Bishop’s Library which was the first public library in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Memory Store is part of the HFNL’s goal to foster a greater appreciation of historic places, by researching the stories and histories of historic places, and making those stories more accessible to the general public. This research includes short video interview clips with people about heritage buildings as well as background research and photography of the historic places.
The HFNL is working to document the architectural history and the associated narratives of Newfoundland’s historic places, in and around the St. John’s region. This research project will form part of a permanent collection with Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Digital Archives Initiative.
We will be featuring a selection of short stories about historic places in the province, in the form of short oral history interviews conducted with the people who care about those places. If you have a personal memory about a historic place in Newfoundland and Labrador, and want to add your voice to the Memory Store project, let us know at ich@heritagefoundation.ca

Daryl Pullman: Genetics, Identity, and Justice
Drawing on some recent cases from Newfoundland and Labrador (e.g. repatriation of Beothuk remains; membership in the Qalipu Mi’kmaq ‘landless’ tribe), this presentation explores differing notions of identity (e.g. genetic, cultural, and otherwise) as well as various conceptions of justice (distributive, compensatory, retributive, restorative) relating them to issues of repatriation, tribal identity, and land claims.
Dr. Daryl Pullman is Professor of Medical Ethics at Memorial University of Newfoundland, and an IPinCH research team member.
This talk was presented at the DNA and Indigeneity Public Symposium, held on Oct 22, 2015, at SFU Harbour Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Save Our Towns Episode 7
The City of Bristol is the focus of Episode 7 of Save our Towns. Field reporter and Virginia Tech student, Jessica Snead, takes you behind the scenes of the new “Birthplace of Country Music Museum” and Catherine Brillhart, mayor of Bristol, describes how Bristol has capitalized on its designation as the “Birthplace of Country Music,” to boost tourism and reshape the economic future of a once waning downtown.
Episode 7 also features economic development advice from Liz Povar, vice president for business expansion at the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, and a faculty interview with Barbara Ellen Smith, Professor of Sociology in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, and co-editor of “Transforming Places: Lessons from Appalachia.” Plus, Kyle Fletcher, mayor of St. Paul, is back to describe his plans for a prominent old apartment building.

Hommage à Shanawdithit
This is an homage to the last Beothuks, Shanawdithit. The Beothuk was a first nation tribe who lived in New-Found land and they've been extinguish by the English colonist, trapper, fishermen, illness...and so on.
I created a body bag (see september 2009 actuality about AH1N1) for Shanawdithit to make us remember how the Canadian first nation are in oblivion and indifference. I also made a blanket for her to underline the british oppression.
In Her Words - What does it mean to tell Shanawdithit's story?

World premiere in partnership with Opera on the Avalon
Toronto - MAY 16 - 25, 2019 | Imperial Oil Opera Theatre, 227 Front Street East
St. John's - June 2019
In 1828, the last known member of the Beothuk people, Shawnadithit, was taken to St. John’s by William Cormack. In her final months, she created a series of ten drawings that speak of the loneliness of survival, the beauty of the land, and the life she used to know. A
collaboratively-created, multidisciplinary opera, Shanawdithit brings
together Indigenous artists from Nations across Turtle Island,
interpreting the drawings to give voice to Shawnadithit and her people, and shining a new light and raising powerful questions on a story misrepresented by history. Starring Marion Newman as Shanawdithit.
Artistic Collaborators:
Jordan Bennett, Lori Blondeau,
Aria Evans, Jerry Evans,
Michelle Olson, Meagan Musseau,
Marion Newman & Yvette Nolan
Directors:
Yvette Nolan & Michael Hidetoshi Mori
