Ray Tomasso: The Art of Paper
The Art of Paper with artist Ray Tomasso
Thursday, November 10, 2011, Norlin Library Commons
Tomasso's talk, The Art of Paper is a slide show presentation on the technical and cultural history of this remarkable material and its application in Tomasso's work. The presentation includes a discussion of the history of paper in the preservation and transmission of knowledge and as an industrial material of great plasticity and strength.
Two works by the artist have been purchased by the University of Colorado Boulder Libraries. The site-specific pieces, each measuring approximately 8 by 4 feet, are entitled Red Skies and Love in Spring. They are mounted on each side of the unique interior bay window on the second floor of the Norlin Library.
The site-specific pieces are included in a larger exhibition of Tomasso's recent work now on display in Norlin Library. The show, entitled The Art of Paper, features recent work by the CU alumni in the first floor southwest Stoa Gallery and second floor southwest Science Alcove Gallery. The exhibit runs through spring of 2012. A forthcoming catalog prepared in conjunction with the exhibit discusses the artist and his work from the 1970s to the present.
Tomasso's work is also currently on display in a one-man show at Vertical Arts, 690 Marketplace Plaza, Steamboat Springs
Ray Tomasso is one of an international group of fine artists who have explored handmade paper as a sculptural medium since the late 1960s. He received his MFA from CU Boulder in 1979, and has traveled the world studying paper history, materials and techniques. In Düren, Germany in 1986, he co-founded the International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists (IAPMA), the world's leading organization of paper artists.
Tomasso's art is created from recycled, biodegradable and renewable plant fibers using historic European hand-papermaking techniques. The University Libraries ScriptaLab recently videotaped Tomasso in his studio demonstrating and explaining the papermaking process. One video provides a rare opportunity to view the production of handmade paper. In a second video, the artist provides additional background on papermaking history and technology. In a third, Tomasso describes his long career exploring paper as a fine art medium. The videos can be viewed at ScriptaLab.org or on this CU Boulder Libraries YouTube channel.
The exhibit and event are sponsored by the University Libraries ScriptaLab, Friends of the Libraries, UCB Graduate Committee on the Arts & Humanities, CU President's Fund for the Humanities, CU Art Museum, and the Book Arts League.

Raku Pottery by International Artist Brent Litsey @ artsdirectgallery
Famous Artists @
楽焼 Raku - Pottery
by International Artist: Brent Litsey
Raku is a 16th-century Japanese art form which evolved from the Zen Buddhist tea ceremony. Sen-no-Rikyu, the greatest tea master, established the concept of wabi-tranquility,austerity,transience-for the tea ceremony. I have strived to maintain the traditional concept of wabi in my Raku work. I became fascinated by the challenge of Raku. Throwing a bowl or vase remains a challenge especially if the work is large. Once the clay is dried, the clay pots are fired between 12-24 hours known as a bisque firing ( 900 °C (1,650 °F).
The finally firing is an all-day affair. After preheating the pieces, I load the Raku kiln. The kiln is slowly brought to a temperature of 800–1,000 °C (1,472–1,832 °) degrees cone 06 temperature range. Experience is the guide here as the work is visually checked for glaze maturity. Wearing protective gear and using tongs is recommended, I then move the work to the reduction chambers which are holes in the ground. These chambers contain organic materials such as leafs, straw and twigs. Leaving the pottery overnight in these reduction chambers underground covered is the key to my work.
I started my pottery work (stoneware, salt glazing and Raku) back in the early 1970's at the Boulder's Pottery Guild, Boulder Co. My family was founding members of the Boulder Pottery Guild, Colorado 1970-1990
Note: Raku pottery is porous and is not to be used for cooking, either microwave or conventional ovens. Raku is not to be used for holding plants or watering. For art display only. All of my Glazes are lead free.

QCCA Queer Abstraction Part1
Queer Conversations on Culture and the Arts presents:
Queer Abstraction: Harmony Hammond and Tirza T. Latimer in conversation with Julia Bryan-Wilson
October 31, 2014
7pm | Timken Hall
California College of the Arts, San Francisco
Harmony Hammond is one of today’s boldest abstract painters and an internationally renowned artist, whose work has been the focus of over 40 solo exhibitions. Her recent exhibition Becoming/UnBecoming Monochrome, curated by Tirza True Latimer, juxtaposes “weave paintings” from the mid-70’s with recent wrapped and grommetted monochromes thereby expanding the feminist frame within which the artist’s work is traditionally shown and critiqued. This comparison invites viewers to understand Hammond’s oeuvre in relation to histories of queer feminist practice as well as discourses of contemporary abstraction.
An artist, curator and scholar, Harmony Hammond has been at the forefront of the feminist art movement since the early 1970s – co-founding A.I.R., the first feminist cooperative gallery in Manhattan and Heresies: A Feminist Publication on Art & Politics. She continues to be a powerful advocate for lesbian and queer art, curating A Lesbian Show at 112 Greene St. in NYC (1978) and Out West at Plan B Evolving Arts in Santa Fe (1999). Her groundbreaking book Lesbian Art in America: A Contemporary History was published in 2000. In 2013 Hammond received the College Art Association Distinguished Feminist Award and in 2014 received the Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award from The National Women’s Caucus for Art. Her artistic practice spans a variety of media including painting, sculpture, and conceptual works. Hammond is represented by Alexander Gray Associates in New York.
irza True Latimer has published work from a lesbian feminist perspective on a range of topics in the fields of visual culture, sexual culture, and criticism. She is coeditor, with Whitney Chadwick, of the anthology The Modern Woman Revisited: Paris Between the Wars (Rutgers University Press, 2003); the author of Women Together / Women Apart: Portraits of Lesbian Paris (Rutgers University Press, 2005); and coauthor of Seeing Gertrude Stein: Five Stories (University of California Press, 2011). The latter won a Stonewall Award, American Library Association, in the nonfiction category. Her new book, Eccentric Modernisms: Making Differences in the History of American Art is currently under review at UC Press.
Parallel to these pursuits, Latimer has been continuously active in the curatorial domain. Both students and faculty members from CCA have shown work in the exhibitions she has curated or co-curated at SomArts Cultural Center (Chronotopia, Threads, Making Room for Wonder) and the GLBT Historical Society (Lineage: Match-Making in the Archive). She was co-curator of a 2011 exhibition about the life and afterlife of Gertrude Stein, organized by the Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C. Her exhibition Becoming/UnBecoming Monochrome, featuring work by Harmony Hammond, recently opened at RedLine in Denver.
Julia Bryan-Wilson is associate professor at the University of California, Berkeley. She teaches modern and contemporary art, with a focus on art since 1960 in the US, Europe, and Latin America. Bryan-Wilson is the author of Art Workers: Radical Practice in the Vietnam War Era, published by the University of California Press in 2009, and editor of OCTOBER Files: Robert Morris, from the MIT Press. Her current book project is entitled Crisis Craft: Handmade Art and Activism since 1970.
A scholar and a critic, Bryan-Wilson has written articles that have appeared in Art Bulletin, Art Journal, Artforum, Bookforum, Cabinet, Camera Austria, Camera Obscura, differences, Frieze, Grey Room, October, the Journal of Modern Craft, and Oxford Art Journal. Her article “Invisible Products” received the 2013 Art Journal Award from the College Art Association. Bryan-Wilson’s interest in the work of Harmony Hammond includes, “Queerly Made: The Lesbian Handiwork of Harmony Hammond’s ‘Floorpiece’s,’” Journal of Modern Craft (March, 2009) and an “Oral History Interview with Harmony Hammond,” American Archives of Art. Smithsonian, Museum of American Art.

Intimate Immensity: Reflections on the Work of Stanley Rosen | 2017 Perkins Lecture
15th Dorothy Wilson Perkins Lecture
Speaker: Mary Barringer
Mary Barringer has been a studio artist since 1973, making both sculpture and handbuilt functional pottery. She received a BA in art from Bennington College, and worked as an assistant to Michael Frimk ess. Her work has been exhibited widely, in contexts ranging from museums and commercial galleries to craft fairs and pottery tours.
In addition to her studio practice she has taught at craft schools, community colleges, and universities including Ohio State and Ohio University, and has written and lectured on the history of ceramics. From 2004 to 2014 she was editor of The Studio Potter journal. She lives and works in western Massachusetts.
“During my tumultuous college years (1968-72) all the established authorities … were up for smashing, and ceramics offered a vehicle for different values. Stanley Rosen, my teacher at Bennington, conveyed a mysterious passion for the medium. He taught me to look at pots, and was my only formal teacher aside from Michael Frimkess.”
Prior to the opening reception of the exhibition Holding the Line: Ceramic Sculpture by Stanley Rosen, Mary Barringer, master potter, writer and recently retired editor of Studio Potter Magazine will give the fifteenth Perkins Lecture in Nevins Theater in the Powell Campus Center. Ceramic sculptor Stanley Rosen’s (MFA Alfred ‘56) retrospective is revelatory. Rosen has long been a quiet visionary. His little known work from the late 1950’s, 1960’s and 70’s will astonish. This exhibition provokes a serious reassessment of twentieth century ceramic art confirming Stanley Rosen as one of the major ceramic artists of our time.

Openings - The Ramble Hotel, Denver
The Ramble Hotel is the first hotel to open among art galleries, studio spaces, and 15 craft breweries in downtown Denver’s River North Art District. It is also home to Death & Co Denver, the first Death & Co location outside of the New York City-based cocktail institution’s original space. Creating a bar-focused experience is The Ramble Hotel’s M.O., as the property also includes Suite 6A, a 20-seat bar; The Garden, an outdoor courtyard bar; DC/AM, a café bar that offers high-quality coffee, tea, and cold press juices, as well as an all-day menu; and the independent pan-Latin restaurant Super Mega Bien. For entertainment, The Ramble has a flexible theater space called Vauxhall with a dedicated bar that offers a repertoire of regular events. The hotel’s 50 guestrooms are decorated in shades of blue and grey, and the walls are insulated to block out noise from the city and other rooms. Each room is has a curated mini bar from Death & Co, wide-plank hickory flooring, Persian rugs, and furniture from Denver-based steel fabricators and woodworkers. In terms of overall concept, the hotel draws inspiration from French Salons of the 17th century, which were places for sharing ideas and creativity. Industrial materials and dark finishes create a modern aesthetic. A brand consultant from Death & Co worked with the hotel to ensure the Death & Co vibe was apparent in The Ramble’s design. Artwork from Denver artists—many of whom are based in the River North Art District—can be found in guestrooms and in public spaces around The Ramble. The hotel is locally owned by founder Ryan Diggins.

Colorado 4K Drone Video: Colorado River
This 4K aerial video was filmed at a location just beyond Kingsview Pond along the Colorado River in the vicinity of Fruita, Colorado. If you look closely at the sandbars, you might see a Casper-esque ghost face staring up at the sky. What a cool sight to see! Also lucky was the timing of several small, unpowered craft passing by as my drone was in the air. Cool!
No fancy moving titles on this one. Sorry folks. There wasn't much to say about a random spot on the river like this.
Aloha, and mahalo! Happy flying!
