A Day in Key West Duval St
A Day in Key West Duval St
Duval Street was designated a “Great Street” in 2012 by the American Planning Association.[2] The beautiful Bahamian and Spanish influenced Victorian Mansions of Duval Street have been well preserved through local preservation efforts starting in the 1960s. On the Atlantic Ocean end of Duval Street there is a mix of early Key West Victorian mansions and bungalows dotting the neighborhood. Art galleries, boutiques, inns and Bodega’s line the wide sidewalks. Although this end of Duval is more residential and less filled with tourists, the sidewalks still bustle with activity.
One block west of the southern terminus of Duval Street is the buoy marker for the southernmost point in the United States; it is close to the southernmost house, a Victorian mansion built in 1896. A favorite of both Harry S. Truman and author Ernest Hemingway, the building was restored to its formal beauty and opulence with a $3 million renovation in 1996.[citation needed]
Duval Street well represents the cultural influence of Key West’s proximity and cultural ties to Cuba. Many Cubans immigrated to the area beginning in the late 1860s. At one time, the many cigar stores on Duval gave the city the moniker “Cigar City USA.” There are many pleasant outdoor cafes to enjoy another Cubano influenced product, “Cuban Coffee”, which is espresso made from roasted Cuban Coffee beans with a heavy dose of sugar.
At the north end, tourists from the cruise ships that dock at the Margaritaville Resort & Marina, Mole pier or Mallory Square are often seen traversing Duval Street's many shops [1] in the afternoon looking for souvenir trinkets and cheap T-shirts. BEWARE the streets are congested with Pedi cabs, trollies, bikes, mopeds, cars, and the Conch Train all adding to the touristy feel of this heavily visited end of Duval.
Near the northern end of the street is Mallory Square. Historic Mallory Square is the center of Key West’s waterfront. The City of Key West and Duval Street share their beginning along this deep harbor waterfront.
On certain nights, the gulf shores of Duval Street often vibrate with a carnival like atmosphere that lasts until dawn and beyond. In fact, the ritual has a name known to tourists and residents as the “Duval Pub Crawl.” Duval is the location of many famous restaurants and bars, including Sloppy Joe's, Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville, which is the original, Fogarty's Restaurant, Bar and Bakery, The Flying Monkeys Bar, The Bull and Whistle, Rick's Cafe and Irish Kevin's bar, Bourbon Street Pub and Aqua. Tour outlets book the “Duval Pub Crawl” activity and provide knowledgeable guidance for the tourist wishing to visit and imbibe at the famous drinking establishments, for a fee.
A 1967 National Park Service survey of Historic American Buildings designated 18 buildings as historic. A full six blocks were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Further protection for this historically significant street has been created through the City’s, “Historic Architecture Guidelines,” approved in 2000, which sets standards for construction on Duval Street. from

'Drag Queen/Red Shoe Drop' Headlines Key West New Year's Eve (Video)
Thousands of revelers in Key West welcomed 2017 with the drop of a female impersonator known as Sushi perched in a super-sized red high-heel shoe.
The annual Red Shoe Drop, staged on the island's famed Duval Street, was one of Key West's four subtropical takeoffs on the traditional New Year's Eve ball drop in New York City's Times Square.
Elegantly dressed in a self-designed gown inspired by the Cinderella story, Sushi, the alter ego of Gary Marion, was lowered from the Bourbon St. Pub balcony as the final seconds of 2016 ticked away.
As the clock struck midnight, she landed and popped the cork on a bottle of champagne, welcoming 2017 while thousands of revelers cheered and applauded.
A few blocks away on lower Duval Street, crowds watched a gigantic manmade conch shell, the symbol of the Florida Keys, descend to the flat roof of Sloppy Joe's Bar. At the Schooner Wharf Bar in the island city's Historic Seaport, New Year's Eve revelry saluted the Florida Keys' seafaring heritage with the drop of a pirate wench from the top of a sailing ship's mast. And at the Ocean Key Resort, a huge replica of a Key lime wedge splashed down into a larger-than-life margarita glass.
Other Florida Keys New Year's Eve festivities included waterfront fireworks displays in Key Largo, Islamorada and Marathon.

Mardi Gras 2018 Adventure on Bourbon St.
I made the 9 hour drive over to New Orleans to stay at the Four Points Sheridan located in the heart of the French Quarter. After joining my friends in the room we make more friends from the balcony with the megaphone. Lots of preparation goes into this huge celebration all for the sake of fun. We get a lot of beads from Mardi Gras Imports which has been our go to bead shop forever. This year Jim went to Whole Foods and got all natural mixers and snacks for the room. Driving Downtown - New Orleans' Bourbon Street 4K - USA
Driving Downtown Streets - Bourbon Street - New Orleans Louisiana USA - Episode 39.
Starting Point: Bourbon Street - . Route: .
Bourbon Street (French: Rue Bourbon) is a street in the heart of New Orleans' oldest neighborhood, the French Quarter, in New Orleans, Louisiana. It extends 13 blocks from Canal Street to Esplanade Avenue.[1] Known for its bars and strip clubs, Bourbon Street's history provides a rich insight into New Orleans' past.
Entertainment, Bars, and Restaurants
Largely quiet during the day, Bourbon Street comes alive at night, particularly during the French Quarter's many festivals. Most famous of these is the annual Mardi Gras celebration, when the streets teem with thousands of people. Local open container laws allow drinking alcoholic beverages on the Quarter's streets. Popular drinks include the hurricane cocktail, the resurrection cocktail, the hand grenade and the profanely named huge-ass beers – a large plastic cup of draft beer marketed to tourists at a low price.
The most heavily-visited section of Bourbon Street is upper Bourbon Street toward Canal Street, an eight-block section of visitor attractions.[14] Among the attractions are bars, restaurants, souvenir shops and strip clubs. There are also a number of gay bars. The strip clubs include Rick's Cabaret, Temptations and Larry Flynt's Barely Legal Club.
Most of the bars are located in the central section of Bourbon. Popular spots include Pat O'Brien's, Johnny White's, the Famous Door, Spirits on Bourbon, Channing Tatum's Saints and Sinners, Razzoo and The Cat's Meow.[15] Marie Laveau's House of Voodoo is located on the corner of St. Ann Street.
The most renowned restaurant on Bourbon Street is Galatoire's; it represents traditional New Orleans dining and has a dress code. Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop and the Old Absinthe House are two of the many casual eateries.[1]
Lower Bourbon Street (lower being a reference to downriver, or downstream Mississippi River), from the intersection of St. Ann Street, caters to New Orleans' thriving gay community, featuring such establishments as Oz and the city's largest gay nightclub, the Bourbon Pub. St. Ann Street has been referred to as the Velvet Line[16] or the Lavender Line, the edge or approximate boundary of the French Quarter's gay community. Cafe-Lafitte-in-Exile is the oldest gay bar in the nation. The intersection of Bourbon and St. Ann Streets is also the center of the Labor Day weekend event Southern Decadence, commonly referred to as the Gay Mardi Gras, which attracts upwards of 100,000 participants.
The holiday of Mardi Gras is celebrated in New Orleans, Louisiana, although celebrations are concentrated for about two weeks before and through Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. Usually there is one major parade each day (weather permitting); many days have several large parades. The largest and most elaborate parades take place the last five days of the Mardi Gras season. In the final week, many events occur throughout New Orleans and surrounding communities, including parades and balls (some of them masquerade balls).
New Orleans is a major United States port and the largest city and metropolitan area in the state of Louisiana. The population of the city was 343,829 as of the 2010 U.S. Census.[4][5] The New Orleans metropolitan area (New Orleans–Metairie–Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area) had a population of 1,167,764 in 2010 and was the 46th largest in the United States.[6] The New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Combined Statistical Area, a larger trading area, had a 2010 population of 1,452,502.[7]
The city is named after the Duke of Orleans, who reigned as Regent for Louis XV from 1715 to 1723, as it was established by French colonists and strongly influenced by their European culture. It is well known for its distinct French and Spanish Creole architecture, as well as its cross-cultural and multilingual heritage.[8] New Orleans is also famous for its cuisine, music (particularly as the birthplace of jazz),[9][10] and its annual celebrations and festivals, most notably Mardi Gras, dating to French colonial times. The city is often referred to as the most unique[11] in the United States.
Female Impersonators Compete in Wacky Key West 'Drag Race'
Drag racers don't usually wear false eyelashes and staggeringly high heels, but they did Saturday afternoon during Key West's Great Conch Republic Drag Race.
Hosted by the island's Bourbon Street Pub Complex, the racing action featured 16 high-heeled female impersonators strutting their stuff complete with big hair, full makeup and body-hugging mini-dresses or sporting attire.
Contestants raced on foot down a portion of Duval Street, Key West's aptly nicknamed main drag, navigating an obstacle course of automobile tires and pushing scantily-clad passengers in shopping carts.
Entrants were judged on their speed and handicapped based on the height of their heels above the regulation minimum three inches. While they attempted to sprint down the course, some suffered footwear malfunctions, shopping cart mishaps and spills that slowed their pace.
The wacky drag challenge was part of Key West's annual Conch Republic Independence Celebration that commemorates the Florida Keys' 1982 secession from the United States -- an action prompted by a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint erected at the head of the island chain.
The 2012 celebration runs through Sunday, April 29, with other events including a re-enactment of the original secession, a lighthearted sea battle featuring tall ships and an open-air bed race next Saturday dubbed the most fun you can have in bed with your clothes on.

Watch Wacky Key West 'Drag Race' Stars High-Heeled Female Impersonators
Dragsters sporting high-heeled shoes instead of monster wheels sprinted along a challenging course Saturday afternoon at Key West’s Great Conch Republic Drag Race.
Female impersonators, sometimes called drag queens, participated in the wacky competition wearing full makeup, wigs and startlingly high heels. They attempted to dash down Duval Street — Key West’s aptly nicknamed “main drag” — faster than their rivals while avoiding spills and broken heels.
Contestants were required to navigate an obstacle course of tires, walk the plank and be pushed in shopping carts in front of a crowd of spectators. Crashes and falls occurred as the divas tried to outpace each other.
Notable entrants included a flashy blonde wearing a leopard-print mini-dress and a red-garbed cowgirl in a bikini top and matching wide-brimmed hat.
Presented by the Bourbon St. Pub Complex, the drag racw was part of the 35th annual Conch Republic Independence Celebration commemorating the Florida Keys’ symbolic 1982 secession from the United States, prompted by an unexpected installation of a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint at the top of the Florida Keys Overseas Highway.
The celebration continues through Sunday.
