Bowl of Chalk tour of Hackney and Islington
Last weekend Blue Plaque Hacks went on a Bowl of Chalk walking experience with tour guide Jonnie Fielding. And guess what we found? Plaques and historic buildings galore! Here's a sneak peek at just a few of the architectural gems we discovered hiding in the back streets of Hackney and Islington...
(Apologies for the poor quality of the photos - unfortunately our camera broke five minutes in so we had to make do with camera phones!)

RONNIE BARKER – RHYMING SLANG SERMON
A long time ago in the days of the israelites there lived a poor man. He had no trouble and strife, she had run off with a tea leaf some years before. He now lived with his eldest bricks and morter Mary.
And being very short of bees and honey and unable to pay the burden on trent, he was temped to go forth into the bristol city and see what he could half-hinch.
He said to his eldest bricks and morter Mary I will take a bowl of chalk into the town and buy some tobacco for my cherry ripe. And he would put on his arm and rocks and his dicky dirt and his rounder houses and set off down the frog and toad until he reached the outskirts of the bristol.
And people would stare at him for his dicky dirt was torn, his how de does were full of holes and his coat was very westminster abbey. He was also somewhat unclean being too poor to purchase any cape of good hope. His bushel and peck was extremely two thirty.
And people passed by on the other side to avoid the pen and ink. He was truly and ugly man, his north and south drooped, his mince(means) pies were watery and he had a big red i suppose.
One day his bricks and morter gave him some money, saying here is a saucepan lid, go and buy food. A loaf of uncle fred and a pound of stand at ease. But do not tarry in the town, bring me back what is left of the money to buy myself some new underwear. i need a new pair of early doors. My present ones are full of holes, and i am in a continual George Raft.
But instead of returning with the bees and honey for his bricks and morters early doors. He made his way to the rubadub for a tumble down the sink. And indulged himself freely on the bottle. And he became very elephants trunk and mozart and when the landlord of the rubadub called bird lime, the man set off towards his cat and mouse reeling about all over the frog and toad and drunkenly humming a stewed prune.
And it came to keiber pass that as he staggered along he saw on the pavement a small, brown richard the third. And he stared at it, lying there at his plates of meat. He said O small, brown Richard the third, how lucky i did not step on you.
And he picked it up and put it on top of a wall where no one could step on it. Then a rich four by two-ish merchant who witnessed the deed, put his hand into his sky rocket and took out a lady godiva and handed it to the man saying i saw you pick up that richard the third and remove it from the pavement and that was a kindly act. Take this lady godiva for your throth and bubble. The man took it and went on his way, and the richard the third flew back to its nest.
When the man arrived home, his daughter was sitting by the jeremiah Jerimaya on her favourite lional blair. And she arose angrily and said Once again you come home elephants trunk and mozart. You have spent all the money i gave you, and now i cannot have my new pair of early doors. Niether can i have wine as you do.
And the man said fear not, here is a lady godiva which i earned by a kindly act.
And the woman was overjoyed and said Thank you father, now i can have my pair of early doors. Verily, that kindly act has ensured that i have more than enough to covery my bottle and glass…
From the Sea to the Source - Walking The River Thames
In 2015, I walked the length of the River Thames, beginning at Southend-on-Sea, where the river meets the North Sea, along its 215 mile route until I reached the source in Gloucestershire.
Along the way I took photos which I compiled here in to a video accompanied by a song (called 'Beautiful World') which I wrote and recorded using a clip on tie microphone.

The Sixties psychedelic garage legend:-
* Veteran Sky Saxon who influenced The Doors; the punk scene; and was at the heart of psychedelia * Studio album recorded in London in 2005; his first for many years. * Backed by members of BARRACUDAS, SCIENTISTS and SPACEMEN 3. * DVD is a live show of 15 songs incl. original hits plus this 26-min documentary & interviews.
In 1965, former rock’n’roll singer Sky Saxon formed THE SEEDS. Their biggest hit, ‘Pushing Too Hard’ took a year to reach the US top 40 in 1966, but was followed by further US hits ‘Mr. Farmer’, ‘Cant Seem To Make You Mine’, ‘One Thousand Shadows’. Their two 1966 albums ‘THE SEEDS’ and the more adventurous ‘A WEB OF SOUND’ were an undeniably simple but nonetheless brilliant blend of British and blues influences, leading to comparisons as being ‘America’s own Rolling Stones’
These raw and simplistic records with Sky’s idiosyncratic vocals, Wurlitzer combo keyboards and fuzztone guitar became to epitomise the phenomenon ‘Garage Rock’ and a decade later influenced punk, but the Seeds soon surpassed that label. In 1967 they coined the term ‘Flower Power’ and were at the centre of the new psychedelic scene. Hanging out with the Mothers of Invention, Captain Beefheart and The Monkees, Sky’s new compositions like ‘March of the Flower Children’ and ‘Travel With Your Mind’ on the ‘FUTURE’ album contained acid-tinged playful whimsy, and like the Beatles they innovated with Eastern-style instrumentation.
At this point in their success they headlined over bands such as The Doors (who built both their vocal & keyboard sound upon the Seeds style), Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, The Kinks, Vanilla Fudge, The Supremes, and split the bill in New York with Jimi Hendrix. They cameoed in Jack Nicholson’s ‘Psych Out’ movie, sold out the Hollywood Bowl and mega-success seemed around the corner.
Later in 1967 Sky released a blues collaboration with Muddy Waters ‘A SPOONFUL OF SEEDY BLUES’ followed in early ’68 with The Seeds ‘RAW & ALIVE: MERLIN’S MUSIC BOX’, a live album showcasing the band to be a powerhouse, but shortly after they disbanded. Since then Sky changed his name to Sky Sunlight Saxon and occasionally resurfaced to release a solo album, whilst always remaining true to his 60’s principles.
The Seeds’ huge influence is demonstrated by the many artists who’ve covered them, including Garbage, The Ramones, The Damned, Pere Ubu, The Dwarves, Residents, Cabaret Voltaire, Pretty Things, Billy Childish, Johnny Thunders & Noel Gallagher.
In 2004 Sky Saxon resurrected The Seeds to tour UK & Europe with Arthur Lee and Love and on their own, and recorded the ‘RED PLANET’ album in America.
Sky recorded a new studio album ‘TRANSPARENCY’ in 2005 and filmed a DVD in London with members of The Barracudas, The Scientists and Spacemen 3, issued as a double package release in September 2005. Sky Saxon & the Seeds toured his last tour of Europe from August through to October 2005.
Sadly, Sky Saxon passed away in June 2009.

Melania Trump Tries Her Hand at Lawn Bowls
(13 Jul 2018) Her game face on, Melania Trump dutifully tried her hand at lawn bowls during a solo outing Friday to a historic London veterans' retirement home on her first visit to Britain as America's first lady.
As President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Theresa May met just outside London for talks, Mrs. Trump visited Royal Hospital Chelsea, an imposing building founded over 300 years ago by King Charles II that currently houses hundreds of British veterans. She was hosted by May's husband, Philip.
The pair toured the hospital grounds before joining a small group of elementary schoolchildren and veterans in making red paper poppies, a national symbol for remembering and honoring those fallen in war.
She greeted the children with a cheery Hello and a big smile, shaking their hands and asking one to show her how to make a poppy pin.

A massive missing cat poster with a difference appears in London
Commuters did a double-take after a massive missing cat poster with a difference appeared in Central London.
The feline featured in the artwork is not your average neighbourhood moggy but a majestic lion affectionately known as Archie - and one of the 'highly-threatened' big cats.
Designed by street artist, Dean Zeus Colman, the 260 sq. ft poster, which appeared yesterday (Tues) aims to raise awareness of the world’s vanishing big cat population.
According to National Geographic, which commissioned the artwork as part of its Big Cats Initiative, lions have now disappeared from 90 per cent of their historic range.
The poster, located in London’s Paternoster Square, was slowly and unwittingly rubbed out by the public as they went about their business - a reminder of falling lion numbers.
Zeus completed the artwork using six base colours, 100 chalks, eight cans of spray chalk and more than two litres of paint - and it took him more than 12 hours to complete.
He said: “Using the familiarity of a neighbourhood missing cat poster, but with a wild twist, helped bring resonance to the piece.
“The magic happened when we unveiled the artwork and allowed members of the public to walk straight across our poster.
“Each of them helped to slowly rub out Archie – reflecting the impact we humans have on big cats living in the wild.”
The Big Cats Initiative is working to halt the global decline of big cats such as tigers, lions, jaguars, leopards and snow leopards in the wild.
Dr Amy Dickman is a National Geographic Big Cats Initiative grantee and Senior Research Fellow in Field Conservation at University of Oxford - which runs the Ruaha Carnivore Project in Tanzania.
She said: “Lions play a central role in British culture – they are the UK’s national animal and appear on everything from our national football team’s shirts to the door knocker of 10 Downing Street.
“Yet, the reality is that lions are dying out at an alarming rate.”

THE EXPLOSIVE JIM MORRISON
by Mike Grant 1968
Jim Morrison lives in exaggerations- the dragged-out half stumble and the sloth-like stance on stage, the upturned, pouting face with eyes clenched shut, the ponderous but precise speaking voice which is out of the best Brando mould. James Douglas Morrison, Superstar, Poet, and idol of America's rising generation, would be a perfect target for the satirist. That apart, he is not as black as he has been painted. Already prewarned by colleagues of Morrison's erratic behaviour to ward the British press during The Doors' recent and eventful stay here, it did not cool my apprehension any to read, on my way to see Mr. Morrison, his publicist's claim that he can be civil, polite, even erudite one day; yet gross or, as Jim says, primitive the next. Which extreme was I about to face?
He's been quite good today, said his British publicist at Polydor- Elektra Records, with the air of a keeper talking about London Zoo's naughtiest lion. I was ushered into a small room containing The Doors sundry people flitting back and forth with no apparent purpose. Most of them were hovering on the edge of Morrison's conversation and it was Jim, in open-necked shirt and tight black leather jeans, who dominated the room.
Questions are met by prolonged periods of deep thought accompanied by closed eyes and an intense expression downward. He can often take so long to answer that the poor interviewer finds he's lost track of his precise inquiry. Answers themselves, delivered in a half-stumbling tone reminiscent of Jim's movements on stage, are accompanied by intense glances skyward. He first wished to extend his praise for the behaviour of the audience during The Doors' two London concerts at the Roundhouse. They were one of the best audiences we've ever had. Everyone seemed to take it so easy. It was like going back to the roots again and it stimulated us to give a good performance. They were fantastic. That's all I can say. Except that we enjoyed playing at the Roundhouse more than any other date for years.
While on the subject of their stage act, I asked Jim how important the sex angle was. Sex is just one part of my act. There are a lot of other factors. It is important I guess, but I don't think it is the main thing, although all music is a very nature-based thing. So they can't be separated. But the sex thing has been picked out because it sells papers.
I became aware at this point that there was a hint, only a hint, about Morrison that he was reluctant to take himself seriously. He says: Their influence was due to their music and the fact I heard them at an age when I was kinda ready for an influence. Jim was courteous enough to me. But a glimpse of what the primitive Morrison could be like came out at the questioning of one persistent reporter who asked him first about the comparisons between him and Mick Jagger. I've always thought comparisons were useless and ugly. It is a short cut to thinking, replied Jim, in what seemed to be too glib an answer to an off-the-cuff comment. He went into deep thought, with eyes closed and down, and finally replied, Well, how do you see yourself? The questioner pressed for an answer. More deep thought. That's a rhetorical answer. You might as well ask me how do I see my left palm.
I asked him if he found the group's followers coming to him to be taught how to live. I get incredible letters, he replied, but they teach me how to live rather than me teach them. My fans are intelligent youngsters and very sensitive.
On a par with Morrison's writing is his stage performance- often described as evil. Jim prefers the term primeval. I was less theatrical, less artificial when I began, he says, but now the audiences we play for are much larger and the rooms wider. It's necessary to project more. I think when your a small dot at the end of a large arena, you have to make up for that lack of intimacy with expanded movements.

The chalk bowl challenge 2012
Army Cooks (1960)
The Army Catering Corps' Training Centre in Aldershot, Hampshire. M/S in a kitchen with lots of pots and pans in the background. Two students in white uniforms and hats are preparing food while the chef checks the progress. Panning shot to show two more students that he moves on to, then C/Us as he adjusts their work, and we see the food being prepared: one looks like some kind of salmon dish with salad arrangement, the next is a veal, ham and egg pie. C/U of the student placing an egg in the centre, folding the meat into the pie and putting a lid of pastry over it.
M/Ss of another chef demonstrating pastry techniques to two students; we then see them rolling pastry and squeezing jam into the middle of some buns. C/U of several savoury and sweet dishes spread out on a table then tilt up to show a student, an instructor and an army officer who inspects the food, samples a piece of fruit cake then nods his approval.
C/U of the canteen menu in chalk on a blackboard. M/S of men in army uniforms coming into a canteen. There is a vast array of food set out on a chrome work surface and the men start to help themselves. C/U of the food set out in serving trays (the main dish looks like a curry or chilli con carne) as the men pass by and serve themselves. Good C/U of a tray with a bowl of tomato soup and a plate of meat and lots of vegetables (sprouts, potatoes, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower? and a few unidentifiable things!).
M/S of an army officer and catering corps' sergeant (?) looking on, then C/U of a rather large soldier; M/S of the same man as he moves from the savoury to the sweet section. M/Ss of the desserts and someone helping themselves to what looks like bread and butter pudding, then the men move on.
M/S in the kitchen of senior NCOs (they are all wearing their army berets with their white overalls) being instructed as they prepare food. C/Us of the dishes including a plate of petit fours, unidentifiable glazed exotic looking stuff, and a huge ham being decorated with a flower design. C/Us of sergeant's stripes on his arm (on a band worn over his overalls), and some fruit being arranged on a cake with other cakes around it on a table, then tilt up to show the men preparing food on another table in the kitchen. M/S of an officer surrounded by men who are discussing the exotic dishes; he is inspecting a large dish of trout.
C/U of a highly decorated lobster on a plate, then M/S of a range of dishes set out on a table before a display of silver trophies and diplomas. The commentator says that Those who endured the wartime days of soggy spam, sawdust sausages and unspeakable fritters smothered in ketchup, would be the first to agree that Army cooking has gone full cycle - from the ridiculous to the sublime.
Note: The whole feel of this film is that Army catering is now of a high standard and very modern and up-to-date. This is nice footage of food and food preparation - most of it is haute cuisine 1960-style! Also good shots of a self-service canteen. There is some interesting documentation on file including a list of the names of all men shown in the film (too numerous to mention here).

Lady Lovely Lute - The Bowl Inn, Charing, Kent
A short clip taken at this pub as part of The Malcfest. This is one of her stage names, a very clever, talented, entertaining, and attractive lady. She sings and plays 16th century Renaissance music, plus some very amusing self penned numbers. Worth seeking out, she normally just busks in London, around the Globe Theatre and The Tower of London. Deserves more recognition.
Video Game Arcade Tours - The Needles Landmark Attraction (Isle of Wight, UK)
This arcade has always been amusing to us! It literally sits on the finish line of Walk The Wight (The Isle of Wight Marathon!)... So after 26 miles of steady incline from Bembridge to Alum Bay, it's time to hop on the Dance Dance Revolution lol! It used to be Supernova, now it's out of order. This was in 2017, so I hope it's been fixed up because it'll be pure redemption otherwise!

Many of the arcades in the UK (Mainly seaside arcades) are called Amusement Arcades. They are typically packed with redemption-based machines with very few video games (As video games simply do not make money). As gambling is legal in the UK, they tend to include fruit machines (aka slot machines) and various other things money-making games, so video games really take a back seat in places like these. They also really hate filming, I'm not sure why because it's free advertising, unless dodgy things are taking place lol
An amusement arcade (often referred to as video arcade or simply arcade) is a venue where people play arcade games such as video games, pinball machines, electro-mechanical games, redemption games, merchandisers (such as claw cranes), or coin-operated billiards or air hockey tables. In some countries, some types of arcades are also legally permitted to provide gambling machines such as slot machines or pachinko machines. Games are usually housed in cabinets. The term used for ancestors of these venues in the beginning of the 20th century was penny arcades.Video games were introduced in amusement arcades in the late 1970s and were most popular during the golden age of arcade video games, the early 1980s. Arcades became popular with children and particularly adolescents, which led parents to be concerned that video game playing might cause them to skip school.
The Needles is a row of three distinctive stacks of chalk that rise about 30m out of the sea off the western extremity of the Isle of Wight, United Kingdom, close to Alum Bay, and part of Totland, the westernmost civil parish of the Isle of Wight. The Needles Lighthouse stands at the outer, western end of the formation. Built in 1859, it has been automated since 1994.[5] The waters and adjoining seabed form part of the Needles Marine Conservation Zone and the Needles along with the shore and heath above are part of the Headon Warren and West High Down Site of Special Scientific Interest.[6][7]
The formation takes its name from a fourth needle-shaped pillar called Lot's Wife, that collapsed in a storm in 1764.[8] The remaining rocks are not at all needle-like, but the name has stuck.
The Needles were featured on the BBC Two TV programme Seven Natural Wonders (2005) as one of the wonders of Southern England.

History
Childhood and musical roots
Nicola Hitchcock's father was a musician, actor and script writer, TV producer/director – her parents divorced, her father leaving the family home when Nicola was three. She has credited her father for her initial interest in music and for teaching her how to create her first songs. She began seriously writing songs from the age of nine, when she received her first acoustic guitar. Early influences included The Beatles and Carole King.
From the age of 15, she began gaining stage experience in local covers bands, learning to play accordion, keyboards and percussion in addition to her vocal and guitar skills. While training as a teacher Hitchcock took the opportunity to learn from degree music students, gaining lessons on classical composition and opera singing as well as keyboard skills.
Early work in bands
During her twenties, Hitchcock gained work as a backing vocalist and multi-instrumentalist on the London live music circuit. She was for a time a member of Eternal Triangle, a London-based pop/new wave band who were signed to Beggars Banquet. In 1984 she contributed vocals and keyboards to their sole album, Touch and Let Go, as well as its two associated singles. She later provided vocals for Shen's Spirit of the Sea (1993), an ambient/chillout concept album of sorts.
In 1992 she wrote and recorded several 4-track demos performed solo as a voice-and-guitar act in various acoustic and folk clubs prior to being signed up by F-Beat/Demon Records.
A Bowl of Chalk (first solo album) (1993)
F-Beat Records signed her up for her first solo album, 1993's A Bowl of Chalk. A Bowl of Chalk was a low-key, stripped-down, acoustic vibe. Hitchcock added folk instrumentation such as whistle, accordion and hand drum, and several tracks featured the celebrated British jazz/folk musician Danny Thompson (ex-Pentangle/John Martyn) on double bass. (Other performers included Prefab Sprout drummer Neil Conti). In a Folk Roots magazine review, Colin Irwin praised Hitchcock's songwriting, commenting there's something indefinably magical in her delivery and in the very human troubled personal conflicts in her exceptional lyrics... a remarkable debut. The album yielded two singles, Pick Up Your Coat and My Mistake. The former featured an acoustic cover of Squeeze's Is That Love, performed as a duet with Chris Difford.

Two-time Academy Award®--winner Emma Thompson and fellow double Oscar®-winner Tom Hanks star Disney's Saving Mr. Banks, inspired by the extraordinary, untold story of how Disney's classic Mary Poppins made it to the screen—and the testy relationship between Walt Disney and author P.L. Travers that almost derailed it.
Saving Mr Banks is showing in UK Cinemas Now
Disney's Mary Poppins 50th Anniversary Edition is on DVD and Blu-ray now.
