In a suburb of Sofia, capital of Bulgaria, and located on the slopes of the Vitoscha Mountains, is the country’s most worshipped-in historic building, Boyana Church. It actually comprises three churches that over the centuries have grown into a single entity. The first building covers an area of six square metres and after two centuries, a further two storey high church was added. The adjoining third church followed in the nineteenth century and is a unique combination of various architectural epochs. The view of the western wall and circular ceiling of the Narthex, is quite breathtaking as they are completely covered with art. Restoration work has taken place for several years and since 2002 Boyana Church has been open to the public.

Boyana Church in Sofia, Bulgaria (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
The Boyana Church (Bulgarian: Боянска църква, Boyanska tsarkva) is a medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church situated on the outskirts of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, in the Boyana quarter. The east wing of the two-storey church was originally constructed in the late 10th or early 11th century, then the central wing was added in the 13th century under the Second Bulgarian Empire, the whole building being finished with a further expansion to the west in the middle of the 19th century. The church owes its world fame mainly to its frescoes from 1259. They form a second layer over the paintings from earlier centuries and represent one of the most complete and well-preserved monuments of Eastern European mediaeval art. A total of 89 scenes with 240 human images are depicted on the walls of the church. The name of the painter is recently discovered during restoration. The inscription reads: zograph Vassilii from the village Subonosha, Sersko and his apprentice Dimitar.
Besides the first layer of 11th-12th century frescoes, of which only fragments are preserved, and the famous second layer of murals from 1259, the church also has a smaller number of later frescoes from the 14th and 16th-17th century, as well as from 1882.
The Boyana Church was built in three stages: in the late 10th and early 11th, the mid-13th, and the mid-19th centuries. The oldest section (the eastern church) is a small one-apse cross-vaulted church with inbuilt cruciform supports. It was built in the late 10th and early 11th century. The second section, which adjoins the eastern church, was commissioned by Sebastocrator Kaloyan and his wife Dessislava and in the mid-13th century. This building belongs to the two-floor tomb-church type. It consists of a ground-floor family sepulchre with a semi-cylindrical vault and two arcosolia on the north and south walls, and an upper-floor family chapel identical in design to the eastern church. The exterior is decorated with ceramic ornaments. The last section was built on donations from the local community in the mid-19th century.

I fell in love with this wonderful country. My trip took me through the lovely city of Sofia, the colourful and beautifully designed town of Plovdiv and a captivating Monastery in the beautiful Rila Mountains. The best part of my trip, as it usually is, was meeting the warm and lovely people of Bulgaria who overwhelmed me with their generosity and warmth.

Located 3 kilometres (1.9 miles) south of the capital Sofia's neighbourhood of Dragalevtsi, Dragalevtsi Monastery was established by Tsar Ivan Alexander (r. 1331–1371) in 1345 at the time of the Second Bulgarian Empire. The monastery was first mentioned in the Vitosha Charter issued before 1382 by Tsar Ivan Shishman (r. 1371–1395). The charter granted lands and tax exemptions to Dragalevtsi Monastery, including ownership of the village of Novachene.
After Sofia fell to the Ottomans in 1382, the monastery was disbanded and its buildings destroyed. It was rebuilt in the second half of the 15th century with the financial support of local feudal lord Radoslav Mavar and rapidly developed into a repository of Bulgarian cultural records. In 1612, while staying at Dragalevtsi Monastery, the monk Job Kasinets from Timişoara wrote the Boyana Beadroll, a list of medieval Bulgarian rulers. The document shows the extent to which medieval rulers were remembered in 17th-century Bulgarian lands. Other manuscripts completed in this period at the monastery's scriptorium include Priest Nicholas' Gospel of 1469, the Dragalevtsi Gospel of 1534 and a psalter finished in 1598.
Today only the monastery church survives from what was a significantly more extensive complex of buildings in the 15th century. The church was expanded in 1818 and 1932. In the late 19th century, Dragalevtsi Monastery was often visited by national hero Vasil Levski, who used it as a centre for his revolutionary activities. The monastery is currently inhabited by nuns

Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria and is located in the Western part of Bulgaria. It’s a largely modern and youthful city.
You can go to the ski resort where you can find two ski centers on Mount Vitosha to accommodate the visitors: they are called Aleko and Konyarnika.
Another highlight are the many museums you can find in Sofia, such as The Polytechnical Museum, The Museum of Anthropology and The Sports Museum.
Furthermore there are lots of restaurants, galleries and entertainment venues.
You can take a walk to Borisova Gradina. It’s the most attractive park with its statues and flower beds, you can take a breathe and relax after a long day. The Eastern end of the park is dominated by a gigantic communist monument built in 1959.
You can also go to Sofia Zoological Garden in the Southern part of the city. If you have the time, you can go to Borivoj Park which is in the center of the city and South Park which is the National Palace of Culture.
You can see the Sveta Sofia Church which is the capital’s oldest and gave the name at the city. You can see also Aleksander Nevski Church, it’s massive, awe-inspiring and Vitosha Mountain.
And finally you should visit the Parliament, the National Opera and Ballet, the National Theater and the Statue of Saint Sofia which reaches a height of 21 m.
