Dark Forest Chronicles: Boykins Springs Camp Grounds TX Part 2
In part 2 of the Solo Overnight at Boykins Springs, I continue my adventure down the creek to explore. We discover new places and enjoy a wonder campfire with the sounds of birds. Enjoy.
Located on Boykin Springs Lake in Angelina National Forest, this recreation area offers a little of everything, including camping, hiking, fishing, picnicking and relaxing in nature. It is situated in eastern Texas near the Louisiana border.
The facility has both a campground and day-use area. The group shelter must be reserved; the campground is first-come, first-served.
Natural Features:
Boykin Creek and the nine-acre Boykin Springs Lake both pass through the facility, and the Sam Rayburn Reservoir is nearby.
The area is forested with pines and hardwoods. Wildlife is abundant, and the region is a hot spot for migratory birds.
Recreation:
The group picnic area provides direct access to the Sawmill Trail, a hiking trail that winds through the forest to the Neches River and the Aldridge Sawmill Historical Site.
Waters are calm and quiet; only non-motorized boats are allowed.
Facilities:
The group picnic shelter accommodates up to 74 guests and is available by reservation only. It is adjacent to the hiking trail and creek.
The campground has several standard sites for tents and RVs, as well as a few tent-only sites. All campsites are first-come, first-served. Drinking water, flush toilets and hot showers are available at the campground.
Nearby Attractions:
The National Forests and Grasslands in Texas have trails for a variety of outdoor activities, including nearly 200 miles of hiking trails, 85 miles of off-road vehicle trails, 145 miles of horse trails and 11 miles of bicycle trails.

Ultralight Backpack to Ruins of Sawmill Ghost Town
Explore the ruins of the Aldridge Sawmill, located the Angelina National Forest, Texas, USA. The town disappeared in the 1920s.
For this adventure, I set-up base camp at Boykin Springs Recreation Area, where I spent the first night. Then I hiked along Boykin Creek to reach the Aldridge Sawmill, spending two nights on the trail. Most people do this as a short day-hike, but I wanted to go slow, enjoy the scenery and imagine what life was like in the early 1900s when more than 1,000 folks lived in Aldridge.
Dispersed camping (sometimes called stealth camping) is permitted in National Forests. See: Follow local guidelines. Leave No Trace. Do not camp within the boundries of National Historic Sites.

SUMMARY
=======
Angelina National Forest is a United States National Forest, one of four located in Texas. The 153,180-acre (619.9 km2) Angelina National Forest is located in East Texas in parts of San Augustine, Angelina, Jasper and Nacogdoches counties. It is managed together with the three other National Forests in Texas (Davy Crockett, Sabine, and Sam Houston) from Forest Service offices in Lufkin, Texas. There are local district offices located in Zavalla. The forest lies in the Neches River Basin and on the north and south shores of Sam Rayburn Reservoir. Longleaf pine is the predominant cover type in the southern portion of the forest, while loblolly and shortleaf pine are dominant species in the northern portion and abundant throughout. Hundreds of wildlife species exist in the forest. Principal game species include white-tailed deer, squirrel, wild turkey, American woodcock, bobwhite quail, mourning dove and wood duck. The forest provides wintering habitat for the bald eagle. The red-cockaded woodpecker, an endangered species, is found throughout the forest.

Tonkawa Springs - East Texas Waterhole
Here's a redneck waterhole for yall!
Camp Tonkawa Springs RV Park is nestled deep in the piney woods of East Texas. The location of this ice-cold waterhole was sort of kept secret for over 100 years, before the Tucker family officially opened it to the public in 2001. The name Tonkawa comes from the native settlers of the land, meaning “They all stay together,” making this a super family friendly redneck waterhole!
