American Mountaineering Museum in Golden, Colorado
The Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum opened its doors in February 2008 to be the first and only museum in the United States dedicated to the heroism, technology, culture and spirit of mountaineering.
The museum brings visitors into the world of mountain and rock climbing and honors the achievements of mountaineers from America and around the world. Exhibits on climate, science, cultures and the humanities as they relate to mountains promise to make the visitor experience rich, exciting, and interactive.

Prayer Wheel and Thur-dag mask
The museum placard states, Prayer Wheels have existed at least 1,600 years in Tibetan culture. Prayer wheels are inscribed with the ancient symbols for a mantra, a prayer that is also chanted or whispered. Many copies of the mantra are printed on thin paper or microfilm and wrapped around the axle inside the wheel. When a person spins the prayer wheel, it is believed that the motion has the same effect as reciting all of the prayers inside and on the surface.
A second placard, about the Handmade Thur-dag mask, states, This mask is part of a traditional religious garment worn during Mani Rindu, a festival performed at the Tengboche Buddhist Monestery in Nepal. The Thur-dag character symbolically depicts the Buddhist belief of the impermanent nature of human existence, and seeks to destroy demons that would harm human life.
These two artifacts (and many more!) are on display at the American Mountaineering Museum in Golden, Colorado.
If you're ever in the Denver area I highly recommend that you stop in and tour the Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum! I list their website, below, but want to add my comments on how interesting and well done their museum is: They have fabulous displays of early climbing gear, clothing, and other mountaineering equipment. At any one time there a number of historical videos running, at different locations around the museum, giving us a look into techniques, thoughts, and aspirations of world class climbers and their associates. There's also (as you can see in this video) a fantastic model of Mt. Everest and complete reproduction of a crevasse as you walk down the stairs to the museum's lower level. If you have any interest in climbing or mountaineering you will not want to miss this museum so be sure to stop by the American Mountaineering Center in Golden to check it out!!
