Brainard Lake Recreation Area
This was taken just above Brainard Lake (it is frozen in the foreground) within the Roosevelt National Forest near Ward, CO. It was filmed at noon on January 22, 2009. Keep your sound on, but don't have it up to high, as there is significant wind noise due to 50mph gusts. The mountains are the continental divide. At the beginning I ask what a bad day at the office is.

Description
Brainard Lake Colorado
A family trip to Brainard Lake Colorado. We did some hiking the next day. An excellent trip filled with beautiful lakes, streams and epic scenery.
Skiing up to the Colorado Mountain Club's Brainard Lake Cabin, Roosevelt National Forest, Colorado
The Boulder group, of the Colorado Mountain Club, maintains this wonderful little cabin adjacent Brainard Lake. The cabin (and lake!) is located in the Roosevelt National Forest in Boulder County west of the town of Ward off of Colorado Highway 72. Brainard is south of Rocky Mountain National Park and adjacent to the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. At the time of this video the outside temperature, at around noon, was approximately 15 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 9 Celsius) with the trees protecting us from most of the wind. The cabin is only available through reservations so give the Colorado Mountain Club a call if you're interested!

Blue Lake, Indian Peaks Wilderness
In the Front Range of Colorado you can find the Indian Peaks wilderness. Probably the most popular area within this Wilderness in accessed from the Brainard Lake Recreation Area. Wihtin the Rec area is The Mitchell Lake Trailhead which happens to be the jumping off point for the 2.5 mile hike up to Blue Lake.
Be warned the trailhead sits at a lofty 10,500 feet, so if your have problems at altitude, this is not for you. Also be warned this area is extremely popular is the parking lot was completely full prior to 7:30am.

Brainard Fat Bike in 120 Seconds
Brainard Lake Recreation Area near Ward, Colorado is a very popular outdoor winter activity area. Plenty of nordic skiers and snow shoe users pack many trails down that then become good for fat bikes.
The trails range from around 9000-10,000 feet. Be prepared for full high altitude winter conditions and pack accordingly. Also note that cell phones do not get reception in the area and tend to die in cold conditions anyway, so don't rely upon them.
That said, fat biking at Brainard is a wondrous experience. The area gets feet of snow and the trail riding experienced is transformed. In addition, for winter only, they open the Snowshoe trail. Note that some trails are for cross country/nordic skiers only. Please respect that.
This ride went from the Winter parking lot (which get full very early in the day at the weekends) up Waldrop, left on Brainard Lake Cut Off, left onto Snowshoe then back to the winter lot again. Then Waldrop once more but this time taking the winter only extension to the right, then right onto South Saint Vrain. Descend that to Sourdough then right back up to the winter lot. Total ride is just under 11 miles and 2,000 ft of climbing and descending.

Weekend Wanderings: Lake Isabelle
One of its AllTrails reviewers said that mile for mile, Lake Isabelle provides an excellent bang for the distance, and I have to agree. Although in the popular Brainard Lake Recreation Area/Indian Peaks Wilderness, and thus not the most solitary experience, it offers extremely beautiful environs for only four miles round-trip of hiking.

Melissa K.'s Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ Scenery and Peace and Quiet
So we ventured out to Crag Crest as it was not a campground we have stayed at before and we were sent out this way by the camp host at Ward Lake, where we have previously stayed. It is definitely remote. You take the turn at the visitors center on the Mesa and head towards Ward Lake, the road is paved, until you pass Ward Lake, you enter into an area that has a lot of cabins and summer enthusiasts. Signs like caution, Adults at play are prevalent. The road turns to gravel and you go through a small little town, if you can call it that. It has a small store and a restaurant. Keep going, at some point you'll hang a left (it's marked with signs) and go a little farther until you reach Crag Crest. The road up is a bit washed out and a smaller car with low clearance might struggle a little here. We drive a big truck so it was no issue for us. The road goes up a bit into a tiny campground. Maybe 8 sites. There are two restrooms for this tiny campground. Their fees were interesting. The campground stay is just $12, one of the lower priced campgrounds up there. But they had fees for parking and for day use. I'm not real sure how they enforce those since there is no camp host and no one really at all out there. But non the less, the fees keep the honest person honest. There is a trail that comes off the campground but it was closed for logging operations. I found that to be interesting. Another camper said he went up there even though it was closed and it was weird, a road had been built and lots of down trees. This did not create any additional noise, however. I wouldn't have even known there was a logging operation up there.
I dropped a star for the bathrooms. They were really quite gross. They weren't very clean and extremely smelly. The lower girls restroom looked as though a bear had tried to break in, the upper screen was pushed in. They were not full and had a trash bag present and plenty of toilet paper but they were just really extra stinky. Another camper ment...
