Emma Grace Thompson - The Saltville Massacre and the Civil War in Southwest Virginia

For the past two years Emma Grace has researched the American Civil War in Southwest Virginia with a primary focus on African-American soldiers. She compiled information about the war and an incident which took place in 1864 known as “the Saltville Massacre,” during which African-American Union soldiers were intentionally killed in the original Wiley Hall structure on the Emory & Henry College campus. “For many, even in this region, this tragedy is often forgotten,” Thompson said. “I hope that my research and presentation bring it to the forefront.”

Chief Boatswain's Mate Joseph L. George's Bronze Star Ceremony
Chief Boatswain's Mate Joseph L. George was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement while serving aboard the repair ship USS Vestal (AR 4).
George, a second class petty officer at the time, saved the lives of six Sailors from the Battleship USS Arizona (BB 39). He survived the war and retired from the Navy in 1955, but passed away in 1996.
The Bronze Star Medal was presented by Rear Adm. Matthew J. Carter, deputy commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, to George's daughter, Joe Ann Taylor, on Dec. 7 during a ceremony at the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor.
