The Battle of Brandywine, also known as the Battle of Brandywine Creek, was fought between the American Continental Army of General George Washington and the British Army of General Sir William Howe on September 11, 1777, as part of the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783). The forces met near Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, as Howe moved to take Philadelphia, then the American capital. The Redcoats of the British Army defeated the American rebels and forced them to withdraw northeast toward of Philadelphia. More troops fought at Brandywine than any other battle of the American Revolution. It was also the longest single-day battle of the war, with continuous fighting for 11 hours.
Howe's army departed from Sandy Hook, New Jersey, across New York Bay from the occupied town of New York City on the southern tip of Manhattan Island, on July 23, 1777, and landed near present-day Elkton, Maryland, at the point of the Head of Elk by the Elk River at the northern end of the Chesapeake Bay, at the southern mouth of the Susquehanna River. Marching north, the British Army brushed aside American light forces in a few skirmishes. General Washington offered battle with his army posted behind Brandywine Creek, off the Christina River. While part of his army demonstrated in front of Chadds Ford, Howe took the bulk of his troops on a long march that crossed the Brandywine far beyond Washington's right flank. Due to poor scouting, the Americans did not detect Howe's column until it reached a position in rear of their right flank. Belatedly, three divisions were shifted to block the British flanking force at Birmingham Friends Meetinghouse and School, a Quaker meeting house.
After a stiff fight, Howe's wing broke through the newly formed American right wing which was deployed on several hills. At this point Lieutenant General Wilhelm von Knyphausen attacked Chadds Ford and crumpled the American left wing. As Washington's army streamed away in retreat, he brought up elements of General Nathanael Greene's division which held off Howe's column long enough for his army to escape to the northeast. Polish General Casimir Pulaski defended Washington's rear assisting in his escape. The defeat and subsequent maneuvers left Philadelphia vulnerable. The British captured the city two weeks later on September 26, beginning an occupation that would last nine months until June 1778

Brandywine Battlefield - Davis-Sharpless House [Gen. Cornwalis & British Officers Rested Here]
British forces under Gens. Cornwalis and Howe marched in excessive fog, heat and humidity since before daylight, making a 17 mile hike crosscountry and were in position to destroy the American Army. However, Howe allowed a break so his men could regroup and eat for the frist time that day. That delay allowed the Americans to move into position. In the Davis tenant house, the frame stone building, and in the main Davis-Sharpless House, Gen. Cornwalls and his officers rested.

Battle Of Brandywine - Part 1 - The Road To Brandywine
The Battle of the Brandywine was a critical military encounter of the American Revolution. Lands within and leading to this battle, spanning both Chester and Delaware Counties, are considered a resource of national significance by Landscapes2.
To plan for the historic resources within the battlefield, it is important to understand how the battle was staged.
A video entitled The Battle of Brandywine was produced by the ABPP Grant Project Director, Sean Moir, to further the public outreach efforts about the findings of the study and the history of the battle. The video features the order of battle, military artwork by Bryant White and Pamela Patrick White, and terrain and cultural resource analysis which brings the animated map and the project to life.

smith's bridge brandywine DE
Brandywine Creek[1][2] (also called the Brandywine River) is a tributary of the Christina River in southeastern Pennsylvania and northern Delaware in the United States. The Lower Brandywine is approximately 17 mi (27 km) long, and is a designated Pennsylvania Scenic River with several tributary streams. The East Branch and West Branch of the creek originate within 2 mi (3 km) of each other on the slopes of Welsh Mountain in Honey Brook Township, Pennsylvania about 20 mi (32 km) north of their confluence.
The mouth of the creek on the Christina River in present day Wilmington, Delaware is the site of the New Sweden Colony, where colonists first landed on March 29, 1638. The Battle of Brandywine was fought around the creek near Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania on September 11, 1777, during the American Revolution. Water powered grist mills in Brandywine Village, near the creek mouth, and the nearby DuPont gunpowder mill were important in developing American industry before the introduction of steam power
