The Shibnibas (Abode Of Lord Shiva) Village Is Just 30 Minutes Distance In A Van Rickshaw From Majhdia Railway Station Of Nadia, Where Raj Rajeswar Shib’s Mandir Is Situated. It Is One Of The Oldest Temples Of This Area, Dated More Than 250 Years Ago. The Village Is Sanctified By The River Ichhamati, Churni And The Temples Of Lord Raj Rajeswar And Rama-Sita.
The Main Attraction Of The Lingam Is That, It Is The Largest Shiva Lingam Of Eastern India. The Main Temple Of The Village Is That Of Lord Raj Rajeswar‘S Temple. It Is A Huge Black ‘Kashti - Pathar’ Shiva Lingam Of Nearly 12 Ft Height. In Order To Pour Water Or Milk On The Lingam, One Has To Ascend A Stair Case Of Four Stairs, On A Flat Platform, Which Is Behind The Lingam To Perform The Task Of Pouring And Has To Descend The Other Side Of The Stair Case. In Front Of The Lingam; There Are Multiples Of Tridents Soaked With ‘Sindoor’. 108 Shiva Temples Were Built By Raja Krishna Chandra. Only Two Of Them Are Surviving. The Main Temple Was Built In 1754 And Is Situated On The Banks Of Ichhamati River. The Temple Is Of Bengal’s Famous ‘Conical Shaped’ (Single-Roofed) Design, With A ‘Verandah’ All Around It. The 120ft High Temple Has Five Kalashas On Top Of The Temple. It Represents The Roots Of The Inverted Tree Concept Found In The Upanishads. Kalasha As Per Puranas Is One Of The Fourteen Precious Gems That Came Out Of The Milky Ocean When It Was Churned (Samudra Manthan). The Tranquility Prevails All Around. The Temple Is On A Vast Area Of Vacant Land With Two More Old Temples And A Trustee Office Nearby. It Has Been Completely Reconstructed And Nothing Is To Be Found Of Its Original 250-Years-Old Architecture. The Bright Red Colour Of The Huge Temple Is In Sway With The Lustrous Lingam Inside.

Guptipara Rath 2013
Ratha yatra, the Festival of Chariot : Chariots of Shri Jagannath is celebrated every year at Guptipara,Hooghly.
The Bridabamchandra Temple hoses the idol of Jaganath, Balaram & Subhadra. On the day of the Rath Jatra the idols are carried out by the towering rath (chariot) to another temple known as Masir Bari where it is kept for 7 days. After which the journey is retraced by the rath, known as ulto rath, and the idols are brought back to the Brindabanchandra Temple.
The gigantic nine pinnacled rath is decorated with coloured festoons and banners and is fitted with wooden horses and several wooden statues. The multi wheeled rath is pulled by four thick ropes, out which one is reserved for women. A rope at the back serves as a brake. The rath is pulled through muddy & slushy ground in a wild rampage and it seems a miracle that the event goes on with a stampede. The event is heavily monitored by the police who clear the crowed to make way for the rath.
The seven day period between the rath and ulto rath is marked with a mela (fair). The mela is complete with marry go rounds and magic & circus shows, makeshift stalls sells household wares to decorative showpiece. Even today Vishnav singers perform reminding one of the glourious days of Bhola Moira & Antony Firingi. Last but not the least is the food stalls selling papad bhaja to hot jilipis. But the age old fairs is also going through the process of evolutions with egg rolls and chowmein being the most preferred food items while stunt bike rides are the new source of entertainment.
Today Guptipara is a town in the district of Hooghly in West Bengal. Located about 75 km from Calcutta, Guptipara has its own railway station on Bandel – Katwa rail line and is well connected from Howrah. A visit to Guptipara will definitely provide an insight into Bengal’s rich cultural and social life and also provide the opportunity to admire some of Bengal’s richest terracotta work.

Guptipara is a village in Balagarh,[1] a community development block that forms an administrative division in the Sadar subdivision of the Hooghly district in the Indian state of West Bengal.
Guptipara sits beside the Hooghly River that divides Guptipara into two parts (Panchayat I and II are situated in the western part and Panchayat III is situated on the eastern side). Two oxbow lakes, Dekol and Dhama, are situated at the northern and southern end of Guptipara, respectively. Before the 15th century, many parts of Guptipara sank and were covered by lakes and rivers. [note 1][2] The Dekol was connected with the Hooghly by the Muri Ganga channel, which can no longer be traced. During floods, water from the river enters through the Muri Ganga Path before it reunites with Dekol. An increase in population and farming, floods, the STKK road and railway lines define the landscape. The village is part of the Hooghly-Burdwan Rice belt.
Guptipara is the home of Bengal's first Barowari (English: publicly organized) Durga Puja which introduced Sri Bindhabasini Jagaddhatri Puja (Worshipping Devi Durga introduced by Lord Rama), with a club named Bindhyabasini. It is now known as Bindhyabasini Mata. In the 1760s, a group of men were stopped from taking part in the household Durga Puja of the ruling Sen family. In retaliation, twelve of these men formed a committee and organised a modern club culture called Barowari Puja. (Baro means twelve and yaar means friend.)[3][4] Opinions vary about the year of commencement of the Barowari puja. Some believe it to be 1760 while others claim it to be 1790.[5][6]
Bindhyabasini Temple, Guptipara. The place of first Barwari puja of Undivided Bengal.
Guptipara was one of the main places in ancient India where the Sanskrit Toles and Pandith lived. Pathmahal, Raghu Nath Mandir, and Mela were situated throughout Guptipara in large numbers. Many old manuscripts and books are preserved in the Sisir Bani Mandir Pathagar, the government library.
Guptipara is the birthplace of folk singer Bhola Moira,[7] and of Diwan Mohanlal, the Commander in Chief of King Siraj ud-Daulah.[8]
In Mohanlal's Memory
The temple complex at Guptipara houses four Vaishnava Temples: Chaitanya, Brindabanchandra, Ramchandra and Krishnachandra. The Ramchandra Temples contain many terracotta works,[3] and the structures bear characteristics of the Bengal school of architecture, with carvings depicting scenes from the epics and Puranas.[3]

Guptipara was a citadel of Vaishnavite culture. Even today, residents observe Ras, Dol and Ratha-Yatra, which is Guptipara’s greatest festival. The Guptipara ratha (English: ceremonial chariot), one of the tallest and oldest rathas in West Bengal, is said to cover the second-longest distance in India after that of Puri. On the day before the Ultorath (the homecoming of Lord Bridabanchandra), a festival known as Bhandarloot is held in Guptipara. Many people across Eastern India come gather there to pull the ropes of the ratha.
Guptipara is the home of the first branded Bengali Gupo sandesh, a special kind of sweetmeat.[3]
Guptipara can be reached from Kolkata or Howrah on the suburban train service. Local trains from Howrah, Katwa and Bandel stop at Guptipara railway station. Train service is also available from Sealdah. Guptipara is 74 km (46 mi) from Howrah and 35 km (22 mi) from Bandel on the Bandel–Katwa Branch Line.[10]
Guptipara is connected by roadways, including the Assam (S.T.K.K.) Road.
Buses are available from district headquarters Chinsurah (Kanla-Chinsurah 8 No.), Kalna (Kanla–Chinsurah 8 No.), Burdwan (Guptipara–Burdwan) and Tarakeswar (Guptipara–Tarakeswar).
Ferry service to Guptipara is available from Shantipur and Tarapur.
Autorickshaw services are available from Jirat (Jirat–Guptipara) and from Kalna (Kalna–Guptipara).
