Smith Center Tour (2 of 6): G. Craig Jackson Theatre - Ohlone College
Tour the Gary Soren Smith Center for Fine and Performing Arts at Ohlone College in Fremont, California, USA.
Produced: Undated (prior to 2007)
TRANSCRIPT:
The Jackson is our main stage. Come on in. It is a modified theatre with a counterweight rigging system. It is a beautifully-equipt theatre. It's one of the nicest places I've ever worked. It has just about everything you could want here.
Right now it's not set-up for anything in particular except they're going to do some publicity photos on this scenery. And this was set up for a class demonstration about how to do power hookups for dimmers and automated lighting.
Come-on out and take a look at the auditorium, itself. It's really beautiful. It seats 400 people, and given how large the stage is, it's a very small auditorium, but what it does is it allows us very intimate performances of big shows. We can do a very large-scale production here, but still keep it very intimate. In fact, we can and have brought it all the way out here to the edge of the orchestra pit so it's very close to the audience.
I think we'll go down stairs and you can see some of our support facilities.
This is our counterweight rigging system. We have 36 line sets, including some motorized electrics and a big huge sound shell for orchestra performances.
Oh, come back and see the green room.
Red Bucket Follies 2018 - Flower Drum Song Celebration
The 2018 Red Bucket Follies opening number celebrated Asian-American actors on Broadway and commemorated the 60th anniversary of the groundbreaking Flower Drum Song. Stars from the 1958 Broadway production, 1961 movie and first road company joined actors from the 2002 revival company and the first national touring company for a once-in-a-lifetime reunion.
The performance honored the depth, breadth and decades of barrier-breaking experiences provided to theater audiences by Asian actors. In all, more than 40 Asian performers joined in the onstage celebration, which featured Sandra Allen, Marcus Choi, Ali Ewoldt, Ericka Hunter, Alvin Y. F. Ing, Baayork Lee, Telly Leung, Jose Llana, Jodi Long and Ashley Park.
The number was directed and choreographed by Alex Sanchez and conceived by Leung and Lainie Sakakura.
Equality, inclusion and joy permeated the performances at this year’s poignant and record-breaking Red Bucket Follies. The show celebrated six weeks of enthusiastic fundraising by 67 Broadway, Off-Broadway and national touring shows for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
Red Bucket Follies (#RedBucketFollies), which was held December 3 and 4, 2018, raised $6,113,301 for Broadway Cares, the highest fall fundraising total in Broadway Cares’ 30-year history.
***
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS awards grants to more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. and is the largest single financial supporter of the social service programs of The Actors Fund, helping everyone in entertainment and the performing arts.
Broadway Cares hosts two six-week-long fundraising campaigns in theatres across the country every year, one leading up to the Easter Bonnet Competition in April and the other leading up to the Red Bucket Follies in December. Broadway Cares also produces annual fundraising events in New York City, including Broadway Backwards, Broadway Bares and the Broadway Flea Market & Grand Auction.

Driving Downtown 4K - Las Vegas Strip #2 - USA
Driving Downtown Streets - Flamingo Road - Las Vegas Nevada USA - Episode 87.
Starting Point: Flamingo Road .
Las Vegas, officially the City of Las Vegas and often known simply as Vegas, is the 28th-most populated city in the United States, the most populated city in the state of Nevada, and the county seat of Clark County. The city anchors the Las Vegas Valley metropolitan area and is the largest city within the greater Mojave Desert. Las Vegas is an internationally renowned major resort city known primarily for its gambling, shopping, fine dining, entertainment, and nightlife. It is the leading financial, commercial, and cultural center for Nevada.
The city bills itself as The Entertainment Capital of the World, and is famous for its mega casino–hotels and associated activities. It is a top three destination in the United States for business conventions and a global leader in the hospitality industry, claiming more AAA Five Diamond hotels than any city in the world. Today, Las Vegas annually ranks as one of the world's most visited tourist destinations. The city's tolerance for numerous forms of adult entertainment earned it the title of Sin City, and has made Las Vegas a popular setting for literature, films, television programs, and music videos.
Las Vegas was settled in 1905 and officially incorporated in 1911. At the close of the 20th century, it was the most populated American city founded within that century (a similar distinction earned by Chicago in the 1800s). Population growth has accelerated since the 1960s, and between 1990 and 2000 the population nearly doubled, increasing by 85.2%. Rapid growth has continued into the 21st century, and according to a 2013 estimate, the population is 603,488 with a regional population of 2,027,828.
Las Vegas is often used to describe areas beyond official city limits—especially the areas on and near the Las Vegas Strip, which is actually located within the unincorporated communities of Paradise, Winchester, and Enterprise.
Las Vegas Strip
The Las Vegas Strip is a stretch of South Las Vegas Boulevard in Clark County, Nevada, known for its concentration of resort hotels and casinos. The Strip is approximately 4.2 miles (6.8 km) in length, located immediately south of the Las Vegas city limits in the unincorporated towns of Paradise and Winchester. However, the Strip is often referred to as being in Las Vegas. Most of the Strip has been designated an All-American Road, and is considered a scenic route at night. Many of the largest hotel, casino, and resort properties in the world are located on the Las Vegas Strip. Fourteen of the world's 25 largest hotels by room count are on the Strip, with a total of over 62,000 rooms.
One of the most visible aspects of Las Vegas' cityscape is its use of dramatic architecture and lights. The rapidly evolving skyline and constant modernization of hotels, casinos, restaurants, residential high-rises, and entertainment offerings on the Strip, have established it as one of the most popular destinations for tourists in the United States, and the world.

Lena and Me - The Christopher Smith Story - BLACK, DEAF and QUEER with MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
LENA & ME is the story of 7 year old who meets a Classic Movie Star “Lena Horn” who helped this boy to discover his True Identities as a BLACK, DEAF, and QUEER.
Christopher Smith brings the story to life as he appears on stage to tell his story of childhood and the challenges and struggles he faced in a society that judged.
That’s until he met Lena and his world changed for the better as he slowly adapted into a life he became comfortable with.
Now he’s here to tell a personal story that changed his world forever, allowing him to feel free from within his own skin, regardless its color.
Christopher is no stranger to the world of entertainment and a world of stage, dance and theatre either.
He has shared up close and personal moments with many famous stars of the big stage, including:
Liza Minnelli, Patti LaBelle, Donny Osmond, Debbie Reynolds and Whoopi Goldberg.
Movie Stars like Michael Caine, Kate Winslet, Patrick Swayze and Singing Sensations such as Prince, Diana Ross, Cyndi Lauper and that late, great Drag Queen “Divine”
Christopher is a man of many talents, both off and on the stage having studied at Columbia College Chicago and a teaching assistant at California School for the Deaf in Fremont. When he’s not residing Ben Lomond, California, he’s taking his one man show on the road, all over America and telling his story on stage of LENA & ME which ends on a personal favorite song of his called OUT HERE ON MY OWN by Irene Care from the soundtrack movie original FAME.
LENA & ME was filmed by Urban Jazz Deaf Dance Company in San Francisco
Further enquiries and booking can be made via Christopher’s agent, Ella Lentz at: emlentz@me.com
Christopher has been Deaf since birth, Chicago born and began his education at Whitney Young High School, where he began to study dance. Since then, he has pursued a career, as a dancer, choreographer and actor. As a dancer, he began dancing with the Sixth Sense performers in Chicago and largely credits its director, Charlotte Akinsonon and its choreographer, the late, Roscoe Gillenwater, as integral to his training.
As an actor, Christopher has worked with The National Theatre of the Deaf, the Sunshine Too Theatre Company, Deaf West Theatre (in Los Angeles), Centerlight Theatre (in Chicago), Chicago Dramatists' Workshop, the Intiman Theater (in Seattle),
Film work includes The Compensation starring Michele A. Bank and directed by Zeinabu Irene Davis. He was also featured prominantly in It Takes The Light To Make The City, directed by Louis Antonelli.
Other dance credits include working with The Joseph Holmes School of Dance, Joel Hall of Performing Arts, Dance Space, The American Deaf Dance Theatre Company (New York City, principle dancer, under the direction of Michael Thomas & Adrianne Enrich), and the Gallaudet University Dance Company. Christopher also performed with, the very innovative, National and International Wild Zappers, noted for being an all-male, all-Deaf, African-American dance company. Christopher considers the highlight of his work in dance to be his work with the Dayton Institute of the Arts, in Dayton, Ohio.
Mr. Smith is, possibly, best known for his work as the choreographer for Deaf Side Story, a bi-lingual musical production, done in collaboration between MacMurray College Theatre Department (providing the hearing cast), and the Illinois School of The Deaf (providing the Deaf cast), in Jacksonville, Illinois.
Christopher received a Contribution to the Dance World Award from the Chicago Park District for his work on this production.
The production, is documented, in Mark Rigney's book Deaf Side Story (Gallaudet University Press).
As an instructor, Christopher has worked at the Rochester Institute of Technology Dance Company (also assistant director), the San Antonio Summer Deaf Dance Camp, The Seattle Theater's Deaf Youth Drama Program and the Community Service for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Seattle.
In Oregon, Illinois, more recently, Christopher has taught dance (ages 8-12) for the International Creative Camp and worked as a Black Deaf Advocate in Chicago. He also was able to choreograph selections from Dreamgirls for the White Ball Affair Banquet, hosted by Black Deaf Advocate, in 2012, during the same year, Mr. Smith was allowed to sign & dance the song Ease On Down The Road, from The Wiz to prepare Chicago's Deaf & Hearing youth for the 78th Bud Billiken Parade.
Christopher's final dance role, for now, was as Larry in A Chorus Line in 2014. During the production, Christopher was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. In recent years, due to the rigorous physical challenges of dance, Christopher was been focusing his energies on continuing his education and on the Theatre, by studying at Ohlone College, in Fremont, California.
He is currently working on expanding this piece into a full one-man show with news about this project, to be shared, as it develops.

PENGUINS - DEVIL THAT I SEE- - 1955 Mercury 70703 B.wmv
In the summer of 1954, Dootsie Williams, the proprietor of Los Angeles independent label Dootone, announces the release of #345 on his label - it features the Dootsie Williams Orchestra, and on one side the vocal is by Willie Headen on the tune When I Am Goneand the flip side is the song No, There Ain't No News Today by a new vocal group called The Penguins. The quartet was comprised of lead singer Cleveland Duncan, his friend Dexter Tisby on tenor, hopeful song writer Curtis Williams on bass, and a schoolmate of his, Bruce Tate on baritone. The quartet had gotten their name from the famous logo for Kool Cigarettes, Willie the penguin. Nothing much of great importance became of that first effort, but in late September the first rumblings of a new tune by the group called Earth Angel began to come out of the West. This great R & B ballad was coupled with Hey Senoritaon Dootone #348 which started to hit its stride in mid October. The Penguins soon were heard live on the Johnny Otis radio show along with another Dootone vocal group out of nearby Fremont High School called The Medallions. The growing popularity of the group lead to their appearance at Johnny Otis Hepcat Ball at L.A.'s Shrine Auditorium in late October along with The Medallions, Richard Berry & The Dreamers, Marvin & Johnny, Chuck Higgins, and Johnny Otis and his band. By early November the recording of Earth Angel had started to break out on the national scene, and The Penguins went out on tour with Roy Milton, Shirley Gunter & The Queens, Camille Howard, Mickey Champion, and The Flairs. Helped by the effort of Sid Talmadge and L.A.'s Record Merchandising distribution network, the Dootone record is now reaching into the pop music market and on the national charts. The inevitable pop cover versions start to appear. In late December the group appears at the Embassy Ballroom in Los Angeles with Chuck Higgins & his combo, and on New Year's Day 1955, they embark on an Eastern tour beginning at Washington D.C.'s Howard Theater.
In early February of 1955, The Penguins appear on the Perry Como television show proving their arrival as a pop music phenomenon. As the many fans of the group clamor for a follow up to their massive hit, Dootone releases Love Will Make Your Mind Go Wild and Ookey Ook on #353. The oddly structured ballad side Love makes for an interesting departure from the usual blues based chord progression and gives the Penguins a unique sound. The flip side however takes off in a hurry on the West coast. Ookey Ook starts a dance craze in the Southern California that remains unknown in New York and the rest of the Northeast which favors the ballad side. Through all of these shifts regarding the record, the previous release of Earth Angel remains the country's number one R & B record into April. During that month Alan Freed holds the Easter Jubilee of Stars at the Brooklyn Paramount, his first significant presentation of the new music. One of the leading performers on the bill are The Penguins. The popularity of the music and its performers are attested to by the all time box office records that were set at the massive theater, records that had been in place since 1932 by early crooner Russ Columbo.
Fresh from their success at the Alan Freed show in Brooklyn, The Penguins appear for two weeks in the Northeast and then move on to Ohio. At every stop the group meets with great popularity on the heels of their first Dootone hit. It is at this time that the frustration by the group over being shortchanged in recording royalties and publishing rights come to the surface and The Penguins guided by promoter and manager Buck Ram seek to move to the Mercury label. The matter ends up in court in the state of California, and the verdict handed down concludes that the group is totally within their rights to leave Dootone and sign with Mercury Records. One important factor in this case was that three of the group were minors at the time which gave the court jurisdiction in the matter.
