Quirky London - A Visit To Brompton Cemetery, West London
A Saturday afternoon’s trip to Brompton Cemetery one of London’s Magnificent Seven garden cemeteries opened in the 1800’s. Only a short tube ride from central London and next door to Chelsea’s football ground Stamford Bridge.
The graves of a number of well-known people lie in the cemetery including suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, the actor Brian Glover, Cunard from the famous shipping line and English cricketer, John Wisden.
Apparently, the names on the graves inspired Beatrix Potter, who lived locally with names for some of her characters.
The cemetery is Grade I listed on Historic England’s Register and is the only cemetery in the country owned by the Crown and managed by The Royal Parks.
The nearest tube stations to Brompton Cemetery are West Brompton, Earls Court and Fulham Broadway.

London, UK: Brompton Cemetery
Brompton Cemetery London
Brompton Cemetery is known as one of the, 'Magnificant 7 garden cemeteries in London. I have previously been the Highgate one; that was an awesome place. This cemetery is close to both Earls Court and West Brompton tube station. It is free to get into and the Royal Parks have responsibility for its upkeep. This cemetery is regarded as one of the finest Victorian Cemeteries in the country. It was built due to a shortage of space for burying people in London. There are 35000 monuments in this place and also a rich variety of wildlife. There are people from many walks of life buried here including the suffragette Emile Parkhurst. This place was opened in 1840; it is a popular spot for the living as well as the dead as people use this as a running venue and a place for a spot of lunch.

I visited a (possible) Victorian time machine!
Brompton Cemetery is a haven of peace of quiet in London, and well worth a visit. In addition to being the home of a possible time machine, it is also the final resting place of Emmeline Pankhurst and physician John Snow.

A transient glimpse of Brompton Cemetery in London
Courtoy monument Brompton Cemetery London
Brompton Cemetery London, Monument for Hannah Courtoy, an unmarried mother and her two daughters. Egyptian temple-pylon. There is no key and the door has remained unopened for 120 years. There is said to be no documentation of its construction. Hannah Courtoy, died in 1848 but the tomb was not completed until 1853, her body was then laid to rest inside. The polished granite memorial is twenty feet high and decorated with bands of hieroglyphics. It was built by Samuel Warner, an inventor, and Joseph Bonomi, an architect and Egyptologist. Some speculate that they studied time travel and planned to build a time machine. There is also a theory that the tomb is one of five ‘teleportation’ chambers. Warner is buried in an unmarked grave nearby and sixty feet away, Bonomi’s gravestone bears similar hieroglyphics to those on the Courtoy mausoleum. To add to the mystery some people believe that Samuel Warner was murdered to prevent his designs from falling into the wrong hands.

Hannah Courtoy was an enigmatic high society woman in Victorian London, well known for her interest in ancient Egypt. When she died her tomb was built to reflect her interest in Egyptology. There is nothing strange about that. What it strange, is that local legend tells of a working time machine hidden inside her tomb. No one can enter the Courtoy tomb since the only key went missing several decades ago. Even if there isn't anything unusual inside the mausoleum it still has a strange and mysterious history. It's the only tomb in Brompton cemetery without plans on record. Hannah Courtoy's rumoured links to controversial inventors, charlatans, and Egyptologists hasn't done anything to settle the rumours.
