One Brooklyn-- Faces of DAPA & DACA photo Exibit at Borough Hall
Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams and Make the Road New York launched “Faces of DAPA & DACA+,” a photo exhibit at Brooklyn Borough Hall featuring portraits and stories of individuals and families directly impacted by Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Expansion, administrative relief programs enacted by President Barack Obama that are currently being reviewed by the United States Supreme Court. Days before oral arguments will be heard in United States v. Texas, a case concerning these executive actions, a display was unveiled that includes giant banners hanging over the historic steps of the building. Borough President Adams and representatives from Make the Road New York spoke about how the exhibition is meant to educate the public and highlight the importance of the Supreme Court ruling in favor of keeping immigrant families together.
“In Brooklyn, we are all immigrants of different generations,” said Borough President Adams. “Immigration defines Brooklyn, where nearly 40 percent of residents were born in another country and 47 percent of households speak a language other than English at home. I am proud to showcase this exhibit with Make the Road New York in Brooklyn Borough Hall — the People’s House — to reveal the true faces of immigrants who have come here to work, attend school, and pursue the American Dream.”
“We are all tired of the threat to millions of families hovering over children and parents because our federal legislature refuses to fix our broken immigration system,” said Deputy Brooklyn Borough President Diana Reyna. “Doing nothing is not an option. Comprehensive immigration reform will bring millions out of the shadows, helping families as well as the best and brightest doctors, engineers, entertainers and entrepreneurs stay in the United States. The symbol that represents our great nation is the Statue of Liberty — not an ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] official or jacket. Engraved on Lady Liberty, a quote from Emma Lazarus echoes ‘Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…” We are urging the Supreme Court to bring light and not darkness.”
“We would like to thank Borough President Adams for partnering with Make the Road New York on this exhibit,” said Javier H. Valdés, co-executive director of Make the Road New York. “What better way than to use the borough of Brooklyn to demonstrate the positive role that immigrants have had in our beloved borough. We hope the photo exhibit sparks a healthy conversation about the role of the immigrant community in this country and pushes back against the hateful rhetoric that many have used lately.”
“As a mother of a mixed-status family — three of my children are US citizens and one of my daughters benefited from President Obama’s 2012 DACA initiative — DAPA would give my family relief from the fear of being torn apart,” said Catalina Villalba, an undocumented Make the Road New York member featured in the exhibit. “Once DAPA goes into effect, I will have the opportunity to obtain a better job and ultimately a better future for my daughters and family. Until that day happens, I will continue to live in fear of being separated from my children.”
The “Faces of DAPA & DACA+” launch was also attended by Council Members Carlos Menchaca, chair of the Committee on Immigration, as well as Council Member Antonio Reynoso and a rep for Representative Nydia Velázquez. The display will run at Brooklyn Borough Hall through Saturday, May 14th and is part of a national effort that will culminate with a large exhibition in Washington, DC in June during Immigrant Heritage Month and before the Supreme Court’s decision announcement. Immigrant groups around the country will be participating in the “Faces of DAPA & DACA+” series, with events planned in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, New York, Wisconsin, and Washington, DC.
One Brooklyn-- Calling for an Audit and Investigation into Possible Deed Fraud in the Borough
Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams and Council Member Robert Cornegy, Jr., the chair of the Committee on Housing and Buildings, called for a full-scale forensic audit and investigation on the federal, state, and city levels into the issue of deed fraud in the borough of Brooklyn, including the role that the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development's Third Party Transfer (TPT) program may be unintentionally playing in defrauding homeowners of their property.
In letters they sent last week to United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Richard P. Donoghue, United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York Geoffrey S. Berman, New York State Attorney General Barbara Underwood, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, and Public Advocate Letitia James, Borough President Adams and Council Member Cornegy additionally asked for partnership with the City Council to enact a temporary moratorium on TPT seizures and other foreclosures in Brooklyn such as to ensure no illegal activity is occurring.
Borough President Adams and Council Member Cornegy will be joined by a number of impacted homeowners who have reached out to their offices in recent months. They will speak to the need to do more in ensuring bad actors and government programs are not forcing seniors and low-income residents out of their homes in the face of a changing borough.

One Brooklyn-- Press Conference to Open NYC Free Tax Prep Site at Brooklyn Borough Hall,
NYC Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) Commissioner Lorelei Salas, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams, and Grow Brooklyn, the largest non-paid tax preparer in the borough, officially opened the NYC Free Tax Prep site at Brooklyn Borough Hall, reminding the roughly 1.1 million eligible New Yorkers to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
With around 325,000 returns claiming the EITC in 2015, according to the IRS and Brookings Institution, Kings County has more residents claiming the credit than any other county in New York State and is amongst the highest in the nation. EITC is a Federal, State and City tax credit for qualifying families, non-custodial parents (NYS EITC only), and singles who work full time or part time or are self-employed. For working families in New York City, federal EITC claims average $2,411 ($2,484 in Brooklyn) and can be worth as much as $8,463 when combined with state and City credits. DCA Commissioner Salas and Borough President Adams also encouraged New Yorkers who earned $64,000 or less, especially the 74 percent of EITC filers in Brooklyn who have previously paid a tax preparer, to file for free using NYC Free Tax Prep.
Beginning today from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Borough President Adams, in partnership with Grow Brooklyn’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, is offering a number of free tax preparation sessions for eligible residents, including single filers who earned $30,000 a year or less, filers with dependents who earned under $55,000 a year, and filers that are self-employed with expenses of $5,000 or less. Appointments are also available from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 17, Friday, February 24, and Monday, April 17, as well as from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 16, Thursday, March 23, Thursday, April 6, and Thursday, April 13. Those seeking more information are asked to call (347) 682-5606 or visit growbrooklyn.org.
Filers should bring a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license or IDNYC; Social Security Numbers (SSNs) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) and birth dates for themselves and all individuals on their return; all relevant tax forms (W-2, 1099-R, etc.), or income and expense records for those who are self-employed; their 2015 tax return, if available; proof of health insurance coverage or Health Insurance Exemption Certificate for the records of cash and non-cash charitable contributions; documentation of higher education expenses; child care expenses and provider information, as well as bank account numbers and routing numbers for direct deposit of tax refunds. Both spouses must be present for those filing joint returns.
Based on analysis conducted by Civis Analytics to inform a new benefits campaign called “Start By Asking,” roughly 1.1 million New York City residents are eligible for EITC and approximately 120,000 are not claiming the credit. Developed with the City working alongside public, corporate and non-profit organizations, the campaign aims to educate everyone eligible for EITC about this potentially life-changing benefit – and other benefits. The City encourages those who are unsure if they are eligible for EITC but earned less than $54,505 with children or $14,880 without children, to file a tax return even if they do not think they need to file.

@Threadtherapy and I moved to New York City back in February of 2012. We were flat broke and didn't know a thing about the city. Over the past 7 years, we've learned so much about this amazing city and discovered our favorite restaurants, bars, and things to do in this city, and honestly are discovering more and more every day.
This VLOG is a compilation of our favorite moments from living in New York City for seven years. We moved from Manhattan to Brooklyn and since moving to NYC we never plan on leaving. The city is expensive, hectic, dirty, but also beautiful, inspiring and always offering you something new and exciting to do that makes us feel alive. Oh and the weather stinks in Winter.
// Moving to New York City Guide [New York VLOG]
When we first moved to NYC we lived next to City Hall, we found our building based on watching a Youtube video on New York by Gehry
At the time, we were drawn to the beauty of the building and had no idea what people were talking about when they talked about New York neighborhoods. We had been living in Florida our entire lives and didn't care about neighborhoods. We had a car, and if we wanted to go to a restaurant, bar or shopping we just hopped in a car and went.
In New York, you don't have a car, and are basically limited to a 4-5 block radius in any direction of available shops in your neighborhood. I remember in the City Centre we had no grocery store, no great restaurant, no bars, no good coffee shops, pretty much anything we wanted we had to take a cab or a subway, which really stunk.
Why did we live in Financial district? First of all, it was relatively affordable and they had a ton of new construction. You paid that low price because the 'hood stunk.
Luckily, the more we explored New York, we learned about neighborhoods and where we felt at home. They had amazing restaurants, bars, coffee shops and shopping all close-by. Also, the housing was affordable and offered tons of new construction. The neighborhood we love in New York City that has everything is Williamsburg.
// Williamsburg, Brooklyn City Guide
Having lived in Williamsburg BK for the past 5 years we've found some amazing bars and restaurants and these are our favorites:
Lilia - for the best pasta in the city
Maison Premiere - for amazing cocktails, absinthe and crab claws
Sweatshop - for Aussie coffee and yummy avocado toast
Llama Inn - Peruvian street food that's super delicious
Radegast - the bier garden that helped build Williamsburg in 2007
House of Small Wonder - they serve the best Okinawan taco rice (cash only)

One Brooklyn-- Borough Hall “Go Gold” this week to raise awareness of childhood cancer.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams outlined his office’s efforts to fight childhood cancer by introducing an initiative to create new vanity license plates for funding treatment of the disease with the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). In a joint announcement with Council Member Vincent Gentile, deputy leader of the New York City Council, made on the steps of Brooklyn Borough Hall as the building prepared to “go gold” this week to raise awareness of childhood cancer, they made the recommendation that the New York State Legislature accept a legislative proposal that mandates that the DMV expand its current vanity license plate program to create additional funding for childhood cancer treatment and research.
Borough President Adams noted that only five percent of federal funding for cancer research and treatment goes towards childhood cancer, creating the need for the additional funding recommended by the Borough President through the vanity plate initiative. He also used the announcement as an opportunity to point out some of the alarming facts behind the quality of care for childhood cancer patients.
“It is estimated that 15,780 children and adolescents ages 0 to 19 years will be diagnosed with cancer nationwide in a given year and 1,960 will die of the disease in the United States,” said Borough President Adams, quoting statistics from the National Cancer Institute. “With this legislative proposal that we’re announcing, we are intent on bringing down these numbers.”
In the pursuit of this initiative, Borough President Adams is partnering with Council Member Gentile on a resolution in the New York City Council, while teaming up with State Senator Velmanette Montgomery and Assembly Member Keith L.T. Wright on legislation to be introduced next session in Albany.

One Brooklyn-- Brooklyn Supports Bringing MMA to NYS and Brooklyn
Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams hosted a press conference in the GEICO Atrium of Barclays Center in support of regulated, professional mixed martial arts (MMA), the fourth-most popular sport in the United States that nonetheless remains prohibited at the professional level in New York State.
A bill to authorize MMA and allow for regulation by the New York State Athletic Commission has been passed in the State Senate but needs approval in the Assembly. The other 49 states allow professional MMA, which would generate an estimated $135 million each year in the state’s economy, in addition to $5.4 million in state and local revenues, and help advance a positive athletic outlet for teenagers and young adults.
Joining Borough President Adams at Barclays Center, one of the world’s highest-grossing sports and entertainment venues, was former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight champion and New York native Chris Weidman as well as Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark.

Access to the Brooklyn Bridge is 24 hours per day and it is beautiful at any time of day, but sunset is particularly nice! This way, you can take in the views of both Brooklyn, Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty while there is still light out and then watch as all the sights come to life with electric wonder. This goes for sunrise as well.
The Brooklyn Bridge is a hybrid cable-stayed/suspension bridge in New York City, USA and is one of the oldest roadway bridges in the United States. Started in 1869 and completed fourteen years later in 1883, it connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn, spanning the East River. It has a main span of 1,595.5 feet (486.3 m) and was the first steel-wire suspension bridge constructed. It was originally called the New York and Brooklyn Bridge and the East River Bridge, but it was later dubbed the Brooklyn Bridge, a name coming from an earlier January 25, 1867, letter to the editor of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and formally so named by the city government in 1915. Since opening, it has become an icon of New York City and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1972.

A Secret New York Island That You Can Never Visit
NYC has about 40 islands. And among those, there’s one that’s so confidential that you can't even visit it! Mystery worth solving, don't you think? We’re about to take a trip to the hush-hush New York island known as U Thant. You’ll definitely be surprised by its interesting history...
TIMESTAMPS:

Music:
SUMMARY:
- U Thant Island is a teeny-tiny 100-by-200-foot artificial island located off the coast of Manhattan. Its history goes way back to the 1890s. The island remained undisturbed and out of the spotlight until 1977 when it was adopted by the Peace Meditation at the United Nations.
- It’s now turned into a protected sanctuary for migrating birds, including a small colony of beautiful double-crested cormorants.
- North Brother Island is currently designated as a bird sanctuary, but its history is a lot darker. The island was abandoned up until 1885 when it became the new location for Riverside Hospital. Riverside was at first an isolated hospital for smallpox patients but over time expanded and started accepting sufferers of other types of highly contagious and deadly diseases, like tuberculosis and typhoid fever.
- If we venture out across the globe, we’ll find even more places that are, for one reason or another, off-limits for visitors. One prime example is Snake Island, which is located about 90 miles off the coast of Sao Paulo. As to why this place is forbidden for travel, the name says it all! Snake Island houses from 2,000 to 4,000 venomous snakes.
- There are other even more mysterious places out there, like Heard Island. You can find it in the middle of the ocean between Australia and Antarctica. Heard Island is home to animals that are totally unique to this area, and the Australian government wants them to live in peace without human intervention.
- Surtsey Island was formed from a huge volcanic eruption that took place back in 1963. The eruption lasted for 4 whole years, allowing the island to grow to a size of one square mile. Since then, it’s continued to be a place of interest for volcanologists, botanists, and biologists alike.

Manhattan landscape, New York City, New York State, United States, North America
Manhattan is one of the five boroughs of New York City, geographically smallest but most densely populated in the city. Located primarily on the island of Manhattan at the mouth of the Hudson River, the borough is conterminous with New York County, an original county of the U.S. state of New York. The borough and county consist of Manhattan Island and several small adjacent islands: Roosevelt Island, Randall's Island, Wards Island, Governors Island, Liberty Island, part of Ellis Island, Mill Rock, and U Thant Island; as well as Marble Hill, a small area on the mainland bordering the Bronx. The City of New York originated at the southern tip of Manhattan and expanded northward. New York County is the most densely populated county in the United States and is one of the most densely populated areas in the world, with a 2010 population of 1,585,873 living in a land area of 22.96 square miles (59.5 km2), or 69,464 residents per square mile (26,924/km²), more dense than any individual American city. It is also one of the wealthiest counties in the United States, with a 2005 per capita income above $100,000. Manhattan is the third-largest of New York's five boroughs in population, after Brooklyn and Queens, and its smallest borough in land area. Manhattan has been described as the economic and cultural center of the United States and is home to the United Nations Headquarters. Anchored by Wall Street in Lower Manhattan, New York City functions as one of the financial capitals of the world, has an estimated GDP of over $1.2 trillion, and is home of both the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Many multinational media conglomerates are based in the borough. Many districts and landmarks in Manhattan have become well known to New York City's approximately 50 million annual visitors. Times Square, iconified as The Crossroads of the World and The Center of the Universe, is the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway theatre district, one of the world's busiest pedestrian intersections, and a major center of the world's entertainment industry. The borough hosts many world-renowned bridges, skyscrapers, and parks. Manhattan's Chinatown incorporates the highest concentration of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere. The Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village served as the catalyst for the modern gay rights movement. Numerous colleges and universities are located in Manhattan, including Columbia University, New York University, and Rockefeller University, which have been ranked among the top 50 in the world. Manhattan also houses New York City Hall, the seat of city government. The name Manhattan derives from the word Manna-hata, as written in the 1609 logbook of Robert Juet, an officer on Henry Hudson's yacht Halve Maen (Half Moon). A 1610 map depicts the name as Manna-hata, twice, on both the west and east sides of the Mauritius River (later named the Hudson River). The word Manhattan has been translated as island of many hills from the Lenape language. New York County is one of seven counties in the United States to share the same name as the state in which they are located (the other six counties are Arkansas County, Hawaii County, Idaho County, Iowa County, Oklahoma County, and Utah County). The United States Postal Service prefers that mail addressed to Manhattan use New York, NY rather than Manhattan, NY. A prelude to organized colonial opposition to British rule, the Stamp Act Congress of representatives from across the Thirteen Colonies was held in New York City in 1765. The Congress resulted in the Declaration of Rights and Grievances, the first document by a representative body of multiple colonies to assert the concept popularly known as no taxation without representation. It was also the first time the colonies cooperated for a unified political aim, laying the foundation for the Continental Congresses that followed years later. The Sons of Liberty developed on Manhattan in the days following the Stamp Act protests. The organization participated in a long-term confrontation with British authorities over liberty poles that were alternately raised by the Sons of Liberty and cut down by British authorities. The skirmishes ended when the revolutionary New York Provincial Congress took power in 1775. Manhattan was at the heart of the New York Campaign, a series of major battles in the early American Revolutionary War. The Continental Army was forced to abandon Manhattan after the disastrous Battle of Fort Washington on November 16, 1776. The city became the British political and military center of operations in North America for the remainder of the war. Manhattan was greatly damaged by the Great Fire of New York during the British military rule that followed. British occupation lasted until November 25, 1783, when George Washington returned to Manhattan, as the last British forces left the city.
