Browns Canyon - Colorado
Browns Canyon, located along the upper Arkansas River in Colorado, is known for premier trout fishing, outstanding big game habitat, world-famous whitewater, rugged and remote wildlands, and a proud cattle ranching tradition. This diversity supports thousands of jobs, from river outfitters and guides to ranchers in the nearby communities of Salida and Buena Vista. Protecting this 22,000 acre gem along the Arkansas River as a National Monument is a community-driven effort to preserve this unique natural and economic resource for generations to come.
The Spirit of Browns Canyon
The Wilderness Society and The Friends of Browns Canyon recently partnered to fund a short film on the Browns Canyon Wilderness Study Area, 20,000+ acres between Salida and Buena Vista, Colorado. This study area contains the most popular stretch of whitewater in North America, and a pristine section of rocky canyon land home to a wealth of wildlife including black bear, bighorn sheep, elk, bobcat, deer and mountain lion.
Ward and Samuel Bricker, co-founders of the Grit and Thistle Film Company (gritandthistle.com), shot The Spirit of Browns Canyon in the fall of 2012. This is the first film about the area and the first time that many Upper Arkansas River Valley locals have seen this natural treasure, even though it's just ten or so miles from downtown Salida as the crow flies.
Senator Mark Udall has been a long-time supporter of protecting the Browns Canyon area and is currently working on a bill that would protect Browns Canyon as a national monument. Please join the The Wilderness Society's effort to protect Browns Canyon.

Browns Canyon Dedication
Summer 2015 - Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell and BLM Director Neil Kornze joined community members from the Upper Arkansas River Valley and partners from Colorado and beyond to celebrate the dedication of Colorado's newest national monument, Browns Canyon! They were joined by Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, U.S. Senator Michael Bennet, Congresswoman Diana DeGette and local and national leaders in conservation to celebrate the designation.
Browns Canyon, located on more than 21,000 acres between Buena Vista and Salida, Colo., offers an array of recreational opportunities like hiking, camping, rafting, rock climbing and more.
At the dedication celebration, members of the Department of the Interior and U.S. Forest Service rafted the Arkansas River through Browns Canyon. They were joined by members of the community who have been instrumental in the designation of the Monument as well as conservation and community groups like the Sierra Club and Hispanic Access Foundation.
The Arkansas River is one of the nation's most popular whitewater rafting and kayaking destinations. The beautiful and often unpredictable river offers boaters rapids changing from mild, family-friendly Class II and III sections to roaring Class IV and V rapids, which should only be braved by experts. On a spring or summer day, hundreds of private and commercial rafters float down the Arkansas to enjoy the scenery, warm weather and waves.
Supporters of a Browns Canyon National Monument
A public meeting was held on December 6, 2014 in Salida, CO to discuss the potential designation of Browns Canyon as a national monument. The standing-room-only crowd was overwhelmingly in support of protecting Browns Canyon by designating it as a national monument through the Antiquities Act.

Public Hearing with Sen. Udall Regarding Brown's Canyon National Monument Proposal
I attended the public hearing on the proposed Brown's Canyon National Monument in Nathrop, Colorado held in April 2013, and shot video of the proceedings. The hearing was hosted by U.S. Senator Mark Udall, and U.S. Representative Doug Lamborn, representing Colorado's 5th Congressional District. The event took place at Noah's Ark Whitewater Rafting Company, overlooking the Arkansas River. Clearly, Chaffee County rafting companies have a huge stake in this pending decision; as Sen. Udall noted, the Arkansas River is the most rafted river — not just in Colorado — but in the country.
Here's a 6 minute video summary from that event.
Sen. Udall, who chairs the U.S. Senate National Parks Subcommittee, unveiled draft legislation in March 2013 to create the Browns Canyon National Monument, covering 22,000 acres between Salida and Buena Vista in Chaffee County. The proposal includes 10,500 acres of new wilderness and seeks to protect the most popular rafting destination in the country. The proposal is based on a year of public input that Udall and his staff have collected since the spring of 2012.
I am proposing a new national monument for Browns Canyon so that future generations of Coloradans can enjoy the unique mix of exciting whitewater and wilderness so close to Colorado's Front Range. Thanks to community input, this proposal will preserve Browns Canyon, create jobs, support our economy and protect our incredible quality of life, Udall wrote in his website. I have spent more than a year listening to stakeholders, and this balanced proposal will preserve this remarkable landscape while also drawing visitors who will boost the economy of this treasured part of Colorado.
Under Udall's proposal, the Browns Canyon National Monument will continue to be managed by the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service in cooperation with the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife. Udall's proposal maintains existing uses, including river running, hunting and angling, grazing, and motorized access on all designated roads in the area. The proposal also requires that the agencies develop a coordinated management plan for managing visitor use and resources.
A drive through Maybell, Colorado
Maybell is located about 200 miles (320 kilometres) northwest of Denver, Colorado - very near Dinosaur National Monument. U.S. Highway 40 goes right through the center of town.
robertr53 wrote to say, Maybell is a famous town in Colorado. On Feb. 1, 1985, Maybell recorded the lowest temperature ever in the state at -61. Today, Jan.14,2013, the low in Maybell was only -40.

Colorado to Washington, DC: Advocating for the environment
The Hispanic Access Foundation and Environmental Learning for Kids took over 60 youth, including a majority of Latinos, to Colorado's Browns Canyon in July 2012. The trip inspired many of the students to take action. In September 2012, eleven of the Denver-area high schoolers traveled to Washington, DC to meet with their elected officials, including Sen. Mark Udall and Sen. Michael Bennet, the director of the National Park Services, representatives from the Department of Interior, and several others. This video documents their journey.
Backpacking Brown's Canyon, Colorado | 2018 Shakedown Trip
Hey guys,
This video is a quick highlight video from a 2 night/ 3 day trip in Brown's Canyon near Buena Vista, Colorado. We did this trip in Mid-March to spend some time with my brother before his upcoming military deployment so I didn't document as much as I plan to with these videos going forward.
It was a great trip to shake down some new gear, including the Big Agnes AXL Insulated sleeping pad, a Trail Designs Kojin alcohol stove, and the Zpacks Altaplex that I picked up during the winter months this year. I'm sure I'll have videos on some of those items coming soon.
Music in this video is from Silent Partner, you can find them here:

Arkansas River Kayaking, Brown's Canyon Run, May 2015
Brown's Canyon is one of the best Class III, kayaking runs in the State of Colorado. It's also one of America's newest national monuments--21,586 acres of pristine canyons, rivers and back country forest, which was designated on February 19, 2015, as the Browns Canyon National Monument.
This run was at a lower, user-friendly, water level (703 cfs).
I hope you enjoy the beautiful scenery, and fun rapids!
