Railfanning At Point of Rocks and Brunswick 7-2-19 Ft. Amtrak #822, and Yellow Curtis Bay Slugs
On 7-2-19 I made my way over to Point of Rocks in the late morning hours, the first train was B709 rounding the curve at 11:10 a.m. running lite power to Dickerson, MD (Pepco). It then was three minutes later when Q414 hit the switches at Point of Rocks, this is the last Q414 that will be seen on my channel as it was abolished not to long after this video was recorded. Next up was B709 returning at 3:03 p.m. with the blue ash cars returning to Brunswick. Then it was a late P030 rounding the curve at 3:26 p.m. After 30 passed the clouds started rolling in, but the rain held out for Q413 coming eastbound on track 1 heading towards ACCA (Richmond, VA Yard). After that I was off to Brunswick, this time for no specific reason. The first train was a late MARC P873 heading west on track one at 4:55 p.m., and then eastbound into the yard at 5:02 p.m. Now's when it gets interesting, CSX Q372 making its way eastbound with a GEVO with a fouled K5HL, 5107 the Thomas Rice Special, and 5A, 5B, and 5C, the yellow Curtis Bay Slug Set bound for Baltimore, these three engines suffered damage after derailing near Philadelphia, on Q371 which was supposed to be dropping them off in Baltimore. After Q372 it was Q416 with 5 elephant style engines pulling the train west on track one. 20 minutes later here came Amtrak P029 on track 2 with 822 trailing as the second unit! After P029 here came MARC P875 at 6:05 p.m. making a station stop before continuing on to Martinsburg, WV (the final destination). The final train for me was a short Q136 with a Dash 9 as the second unit.
All trains in this video were recorded on 7-2-19 at Point of Rocks, and Brunswick, MD.

The Forgotten Story of Petersville, Maryland (2016)
A program presented on July 17, 2016, as part of the Lovettsville Historical Society Lecture Series by Jody Brumage, Historian and Curator of the South Mountain Heritage Society in Burkittsville, MD.
Petersville, Maryland -- which lies just north of Brunswick -- is one of the oldest and yet most overlooked communities in the Middletown Valley. Most people from the Lovettsville area know it just as a small crossroads, where Routes 79 and 180 intersect, on the way to Frederick, MD.
Yet this was once a thriving, important community, which overshadowed Berlin and later Brunswick, MD. It has been home to two governors of Maryland (Thomas Sim Lee, and Francis Thomas), historic religious institutions (including Catholic, Episcopal, and Lutheran churches), and it was the site of significant educational advances in the region. Petersville is also home to some of the best preserved agricultural land in Frederick County and still maintains its unique, Tidewater charm.

CSX and Kentucky Steam: The Ravenna Rail Heritage Center
Irvine, KY – May 19, 2018 – The Kentucky Steam Heritage Corp. (KSHC), a not-for-profit rail preservation group, announced the intent to purchase nearly 50 acres of former rail yard property from CSX Transportation to establish a rail-based tourist and community development center. KSHC plans to establish a multi-use facility on the site of CSX’s retired Ravenna Car Shop, creating an immersive, hands-on experience for tourists and tradespeople alike.
The historic yard office building, track, and a modern-era railcar facility will be included in the transaction and will be used to showcase the rehabilitation and operation of world-renown steam locomotive Chesapeake and Ohio 2716 and other regionally-relevant equipment. The purchase of the property and facilities is the first of many steps on the path to achieving KSHC’s vision for the Kentucky Rail Heritage Center.
“The model for this campus is not that of a traditional museum,” said Chris Campbell, president of the Lexington (KY)-based charity. “The Kentucky Rail Heritage Center will be a destination where people can experience the operation of historic rail equipment, take their dog for a walk, and get a bite to eat at a local restaurant, all on the same visit,” he added. “We can’t thank CSX enough for providing the opportunity to creatively infuse the local and regional economy.”
KSHC has worked closely with its community, state and private partners over the past several years to rally support for this endeavor and to gain key proponents in Washington, D.C.
This is a breath of fresh air for Estill County” said Joe Crawford, director of the Estill Development Alliance. “This gives us a great opportunity to work hand-in-hand regionally with our cousins in nearby Eastern Kentucky counties. The fact that this project builds on our own history and heritage to help us progress makes it all that much sweeter. Economic development, education, tourism development, job creation, heritage preservation - it's a win on every front. We look forward to a long and successful relationship with CSX and KSHC.
CSX has been working closely with KSHC and community leaders for over a year to help establish this unique endeavor.
“This is a win-win transaction that allows CSX to focus on our core business, while bringing new economic opportunities to Eastern Kentucky through CSX’s retired Ravenna Car Shop,” said Shantel Davis, vice president of real estate and facilities for CSX. “It’s an honor to work with organizations like KSHC to make a positive, meaningful impact on the community and to move our company forward.”
KSHC anticipates taking possession of the property in mid-summer 2018, and will immediately begin work on the project.
“Fundraising is our first and most important aim,” said KSHC Vice President Chad Harople. “Without significant investment, this will take time to get going. But, with proper funding, we envision being up and running by late 2018.”
Harpole says that the group hopes to raise $300,000 in the first three months of the project, and $500,000 by years’ end. Much of the work revolves around improving rail infrastructure on the grounds. Contributions also will provide matches for federally-funded ARC grants that the project has already applied for.
“It's an incredible opportunity to attract federal grant dollars to Eastern Kentucky, and it’s all because of CSX’s generosity to get us in this position” Harpole added.
“This is just the beginning of what we hope will be a long and fruitful relationship with CSX.”

Railfanning Brunswick, MD 6-24-19 Ft. BNSF on K157
On 6-24-19 I made my way to Brunswick on a Monday Afternoon. The first train I saw was E720 pulling out of the yard at 12:57 p.m. Next up was Q371 who was very delayed due to an explosion in the Philadelphia area. After Q371 at 1:54 p.m. was Amtrak P030 pulling eastbound at 2:09 p.m. At 2:21 p.m. we had another empty coal train (E780) pulling towards the mountains of West Virginia. After that coal train there was a long break until 4:57 p.m. when a slightly late MARC P873 arrived at the Brunswick station. After 873 pulled west passed the signal it pulled east into the yard at 5:04 p.m., and then the track 2 and 4 gates started going down at 5:05 p.m. for Q372 with a DPU unit on the rear end. After that it was Engineer Bryan pulling the Capital Limited westbound on track 1 giving a great horn show and wave to me and Phillip Lee. Then it was the next MARC train 875 heading westbound bound for Martinsburg, WV at 5:59 p.m., and then once again here came N789 heading eastbound on track 2 with an old New York Central coal hopper near the end of the train. After that there was word that B712, the yard switcher was pulling out of the yard and then backing back in, now you may ask what's so special about that, well B712 had 2 BNSF and an NS, GE units. After that the last train for me was coming, K157 an empty ethanol train that was made up of 2 different trains came roaring west through Brunswick, with 2 BNSF DPU's mid train.
All trains in this video were recorded in Brunswick, MD on 6-24-19!

RED DEVIL - Restoration - Final Steam Test and Transfer
In the last episode of the Restoration series, the day we all have been waiting for has finally arrived. The mighty Red Devil makes its return to the rails after being in storage for almost fifteen years. The restoration crew do final checks and adjustments, including setting the safety valves, reverser and attending to a number of steam leaks. Once the roadworthy is complete the locomotive departs for its journey back to Cape Town. Western Cape, South Africa.
Músic by e-soundtrax: ***
South African Class 26, No 3450 affectionately known as the Red Devil originally started life as a standard class 25 Non-condenser built by Henschel in 1953, works number 28769.
The class initially suffered a number of teething problems with their connecting rod bearings and valve gear. This lead to a redesign of the cross-heads and the fitment of larger bearings from other manufacturers.
The NCs soon went on to prove themselves as some of South Africa's most capable and reliable mainline steam locomotives with many seeing service well into the early 1990's. They still considered one of the largest non-articulated narrow gauge steam locomotives ever built.
Political motivations, strategic locomotive reserve or the looming oil crisis are a discussion for another time and place. I believe it worth mentioning that the Red Devil existence can almost exclusively be attributed to David Wardale, Livio Porta and the many workshop and footplate personnel that took interest in the project and not necessarily the SAR.
Wardale's work was met with a fair amount of resistance from the SAR hierarchy with many believing the project to be a waste of time and money on traction that they already considered obsolete. Many also believed that steam had reached its full potential and weren't keen to accept that their own work could be improved upon. If it wasn't for Wardales's rather ask for forgiveness than permission approach the project most likely would have seen untimely demise.
With that being said the Red Devil wasn't perfect, prototypes seldom are, but it proved the principles were sound and the hope was that it would lead to the development of entirely new class designed from the ground up deploying those principles.
Despite the time and effort invested in its creation, the Red Devil was simply too complicated and soon fell out of favour with maintenance and footplate crews. Many of which simply refused to learn how to operate it correctly and this quickly lead to a false perception that the locomotive was a poor performer and no better than a standard 25NC.
With Wardale leaving the SAR and nobody to look after it, crews took upon themselves to remove many of the modification some of which were specially manufactured. There are however a number of structural modification that could not be removed and these are still visible on the locomotive today.
Wardale's book is a must-read for any serious enthusiast, if not for the story, read it for the truth. The improvements done during its conversion ultimately lead to 28% coal saving, 30% water saving and a 43% increase in drawbar power. During its peak, the Red Devil had a maximum power output of 5030 hp at 100km/h.
3450 has been in storage for nearly two decades but has now been leased by Ceres Rail Company that have moved the locomotive to Worcester for restoration. Western Cape, South Africa.
