** XH558 Ground Runs March 2013 Pt 2**
On Monday 25th March we carried out essential engine test runs, here is a video taken during the test. Note the distinctive 'Vulcan Howl' that can be heard several times when the engine gets to 100%.
XH558 is the last flying Avro Vulcan and the last flying representative of Britain's famous V-force. She is operated by a charity that must raise around £2 million each year to maintain and operate her.

SEPTEMBER NEW INSTRUCTION - The Old Post Office is situated within the attractive South Leicestershire village of Bruntingthorpe, with views spanning open countryside. The house itself dates back to around 1860 and has undergone a meticulous programme of refurbishment in recent years culminating in a modern yet characterful home with fantastic outbuilding and private gardens.
Vulcan XH558 fly over Woodford(EGCD) HD1080P
Avro Vulcan XH558 (military serial XH558, civil aircraft registration G-VLCN) The Spirit Of Great Britain is the only airworthy example of the 134 Avro Vulcan jet powered delta winged strategic nuclear bomber aircraft operated by the Royal Air Force during the Cold War.
Vulcan XH558 first flew in 1960, and was one of the few examples converted for a maritime reconnaissance role in 1973, and then again as an air-to-air refuelling tanker in 1982. After withdrawal in 1984 it continued with the RAF's Vulcan Display Flight, performing until 1992.[1] In 1993 it was sold to the Walton family who used it for ground based displays at their Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome in Leicestershire, until 1999. Through a combination of public donations and lottery funding, it was restored to airworthy condition by the Vulcan To The Sky Trust, who returned it to flight on 18 October 2007. The donations required to reach that point totaled £6.5m.
It recommenced its display career in 2008, funded by continuing donations to assist the £2m a year running costs. In the summers from 2008 to 2010 it was based at RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, moving its winter base to RAF Lyneham, Wiltshire at the end of 2009. From 2011 it moved to a new year round base at the commercial Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield. The prospect of grounding & sale due to lack of funds was regularly averted, and XH558 flew long enough for fundamental engineering life-expectancy issues to become the main threat to continued operation. After being overcome once to gain an extra two years flight, on 15 May 2015 it was confirmed that 2015 would be XH558's last flying season, due to it having flown 10% longer than any other Vulcan.[2]

Ghost UK - RAF Bruntingthorpe
We began the investigation in the control tower. It was noticed that strange lights were appearing on the ceiling around us, these were captured on camera. Sonia was picking up on a man called Sam he was 26 with short, skin head, dark hair, the names Sarah, Henry and Harold were also mentioned.
We began by using the spirit box and believe we managed to get a name. During the evening we also captured on EVP a voice saying “Are you there?”
Some of the group decided to go outside onto the runway where there was an old nimrod plane. They used the spirit box, Michael asked how many people were present and a response was captured of six. Craig also had the feeling that people were walking around them while they were out there.
We concluded the investigation by using the spirit board; the board seemed to be quite active and seemed to be responding to our questions. It was also noted that there was an increase in orb activity around us at this time; this was all captured again on camera.
Conclusion
It was felt that this location was a very interesting place; we were unable to explain the lights on the ceiling and feel that one of the EVP’s in particular was one of the best we have had in a long time. Ghostuk and Gi5 would like to thank the people who made this investigation possible.
Other Information
Built in 1942, during WW2. It was home to 29 Sqn Operational Training Unit who flew Vickers Wellington twin engine bombers. Built to the usual RAF wartime plan of 3 runways in a triangle to take into account various wind directions. These were 07/25 the main one, 00/18 and 13/31 the end of which appears to be now underneath a hanger, which was built in 1957.
The RAF stopped using this airbase after the war and it appears it was unused until the American USAF took over in 1957. Although we have found a reference to Sir Frank Whittle's company PowerJets using this airfield for post war for testing purposes.
1954 saw a rebuild in readiness for the arrival of the USAF, the runway was rebuilt with deep foundations to allow the heaviest planes at the time to land there, it was also extended to almost 2 miles in length & today it’s still one of the longest runways in the country. The other two old wartime runways were also abandoned at this time; there are a few traces about the site. A new hanger was also built as mentioned above which is today near the main entrance, along with a new Control Tower. Although the old RAF tower was left in situe & is the one we see today.
The USAF 100th Bomb Wing arrived in 1957 & flew B-47E Stratojets, these were nuclear bombers & this was the cold war! Now code named “Big Thunder” the American air force stayed until August 1962. The nuclear bombers returned home in 1959 following a major redeployment & were replaced by 10th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, who flew the Douglas RB-66B Destroyer; they used this base as a satellite airfield, their main base RAF Alconbury, Cambridgeshire. However there was insufficient space for all three, so one wing had to be out stationed here.
The RAF returned briefly during the 1960's but the airfield was unused until 1972, when the Rootes Group purchased the site for motor vehicle testing. This continued for the next eleven years through the names of Chrysler & then Peugeot.
In 1983, the current owners C Walton Ltd, purchased the airfield and continue to use it to this day mainly as a vehicle proving ground. The airfield perimeter track and runway are ideal to test all sorts of road vehicles on. There is also an air museum on the airfield with many wonderful aircrafts from the past all in working condition but not airworthy, unfortunately. There has recently been some activity dismantling airliners now at the end of their economic lives, and aircraft do occasionally land here once more, bringing the story of the airfield in a full circle.
