Sakina Abdus Shakur is a scholar, aspiring poet and media artist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She received her B.A. from Bryn Mawr College in Philosophy, and has just returned stateside from a Fulbright Fellowship in Athens, Greece.
Sakina’s media art includes her Fulbright blog, the--absurd.tumblr.com, which displays short films of Athenian artists and photography of Athenian street art. The blog portrays a nuanced perspective of Athens, Greece—beyond the weight of ancient history or current financial standing, as the blog seeks to contextualize the difference between structural economics and the agency of a youth generation.
Sakina has also created videos in collaboration with the Fulbright Foundation Greece, in support of the Institute of International Education’s “Generation Study Abroad Initiative,” which encourages college students to study abroad and become members of our globalized world!

Greece attracts many study abroad students searching for knowledge of the ancients. The collaborative effort between the Fulbright Foundation Greece and Sakina, brings to light the true wisdom of Greek culture: that reflection on the past allows for full absorption of the present. Study abroad in Greece facilitated this introspection for those filmed, and the videos provide a glimpse of their intimate articulations of self-growth. The videos feature Fulbrighters reflecting on past study abroad experience, as well as students immersed in the experience with the “College Year in Athens” study abroad program.
