Bucharest Train Station 4k
I've come to know Romania as a super safe place with awesome people!! However, right before my cousin dropped me off, he gave me a warning that the train station is where the pick-pockets like to hang out -- you might not notice it in the video, but the place was swarming with police and security. I kind of blew him off on his first warning, so he basically sat me down and told me, seriously, this place is the dangerous one -- if you take your eyes off your stuff for a second there's a good chance it'll be gone!

An hour spent at Bucharest main station revealed quite a variety of locos, rolling stock and liveries. The electric locos are basically variants of one type, distinguished by their different paint jobs - red ones looking like Coke Cans with their white flash. Romania has quite a lot of second hand rolling stock, mainly ex-SNCF commuter units, and an ex-SNCF freight loco is seen still bearing the FRET branding alongside its new Romanian numbers. A couple of newish Siemens Desiro units were seen, together with coaching stock in several colours. Strangely photography is not permitted on the station concourse but OK out on the platforms.

The North Station in Bucharest
The North Station in Bucharest is the biggest railway station in Romania. Approximately 300 trains are arriving in and departing from this station every day. The station was built between 1868 and 1872, the building being included on the list of historical monuments in Bucharest. Even if it was not designed to be the main station in Bucharest, it has become the main railway node of the Capital City and of Romania, but it was already too small to accommodate the growing flow of traffic as early as 1880. The communist period saw a spectacular growth in railway transport, but the number of passengers has plummeted all across Romania since 1990. Among other issues, the precarious state of the station also led to the reduction of rail traffic. As early as 1906, when the famous Orient Express train was inaugurated, the North Station in Bucharest was included as a stop on this route. At present, the Orient Express is running twice a year.

Bucharest Railway Station - Flagship Project for Romania
A skillfully orchestrated effort to turn Bucharest Central Station area into a major European railway node and high-speed train stop, in combination with a multimodal hub serving the capital and the country, will bring major economic and social benefits. It will attract business and investments to the capital and the country. Additional benefits on a regional scale are the stimulation of economic vitality, improved access to jobs, reduced transportation cost and reduced infrastructure cost compared to sprawl-based growth. Benefits on a corridor scale are the creation of a coordinated system and network of stations and a strong real estate market. Finally, at the station and project level, the main benefits are the increased land and property value, improved public health due to increased walking and biking and the creation of a sense of community and place.
