Buckskin Gultch Slot Canyon - Kanab, Utah - 4K
One of my new favorite places. Buckskin Gultch is considered to be the longest slot canyon in the world well over 20 miles. This narrow meandering path is a spectacular and peaceful place in the incredible state of Utah.
Hiking Buckskin Gulch in Southern Utah - June 2013
I took the 2013 Acura ILX along with some friends & family to explore the longest and deepest slot canyon in the southwestern United States. Buckskin Gulch is located at the Utah / Arizona border about 38 miles east of Kanab, Utah. We spent about 6 hours hiking down the canyon and back. Enjoy the special feature midway through, where my friend and my mom do a goofy clogging dance.
Let's Hike: Buckskin Gulch
Buckskin Gulch carves a 12-mile gash through the desert of southern Utah and is the longest and deepest slot canyon in the United States (and possibly the world). Backpacker Magazine designated it as America's Most Dangerous hike due to the danger of extreme flash flooding without any means of easy escape from the canyon due to it's size. However, when the weather is cooperating this is an awesome 2-day backpacking trip through some amazing canyon scenery. We did the Wire Pass through Whitehouse route, hiking the 12 miles of Buckskin Gulch to it's confluence with Paria Canyon and then an additional 7 miles or so up Paria Canyon to the waiting car.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION AND TERRAIN:
The Hog Canyon Ride starts near the mouth of Hog Canyon and proceeds through a series of technical sandstone canyon sections at an elevation of approximately 6,000 feet along the southern edge of the Vermillion Cliffs. This ride is primarily on sandy two-track trails with large rocks, deep ruts, and terraces that need to be negotiated, plus a few sections of slick rock sandstone. It may also have stream crossings that may be challenging with over a foot of water, rapid currents and unstable stream bottoms. This trail is for very experienced riders only.

Zebra and Tunnel Slot Canyons Escalante, Utah.
Zebra and Tunnel Slot Canyons in Escalante, Utah are unique. The banding in the sandstone in Zebra is not like many other slots. The colors are different and nature's design is one of a kind.
Although the canyon is very short it has a lot to offer to the photographer. A crow has taken up residence and made quite a mess down one wall but we did not find it in the way. Another hiker who was there early in the morning commented on the racket the bird was making.
Since this slot is so short and you return the way back down the canyon it may be a good idea to travel in and out in small groups. In other words take turns so everyone can enjoy and photograph. There is little to no room in this narrow gulch.
Tunnel is not that photogenic. It is just like the name, more of a tunnel with little light. It has a spooky feel to it. There was waste deep water when I was there and it was very cold. The trip is only a few hundred feet long. I found it to be quite fun.
One thing that stands out about this trip is the walk to and from. It is a very pretty hike. Another thing I found interesting was the Moki marbles or balls that litter the wash.

Peekaboo Canyon - Kanab, Utah (FREE Alternative to Antelope Canyon)
Todd Hata and I continue our Utah adventures with a slot canyon that's just north of Kanab. To get to it you need to either drive with a 4x4 or hike 3 miles in the sand. Peekaboo Canyon is free to go to and looks amazing. A great alternative to Antelope Canyon which is 90 miles away. The best part was that we had it all to ourselves. Add Peekaboo Canyon to your list when you go to Utah.
Note that this is NOT the Peekaboo Canyon near the town of Escalante.

Wire Pass and Buckskin Gulch
A classic Southern Utah slot canyon experience.
The Wave, North Coyote Buttes, via Wire Pass Trail, Near Arizona & Utah border. Our 2020 Road Trip
2020 New years road trip, Day 5 Stop 1 (01/05/2020), our final day as we make our way home. We were lucky in receiving a pair of tickets from the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument BLM visitors center to visit The Wave. We were among hundreds of other people trying to get the coveted permits. We drew the permit on a Friday for the following Sunday. As such we adjusted our schedules to accommodate the visit. While we waited the next couple days we toured the area between Kanab, Utah and Page Arizona. This entire region is beautiful and worth the visit.
The Paria Mountains
Paria or Pahreah, is a ghost town on the Paria River in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in central Kane County, Utah, United States. It was inhabited from 1870 to 1929, and later used as a filming location.
The area was first settled in 1865 by a Mormon group led by Peter Shirts. This early settlement was named Rockhouse, for Shirts's strongly built sandstone house. After the end of the Black Hawk War in 1867 settlers began to arrive at a rapid pace.

House Rock Valley Road to White Pocket, Utah & Arizona, 23 May 2018
Windshield mounted GoPro video of drive on House Rock Valley Road. Video starts in Utah just after leaving Route 89, and ends at White Pocket, Vermillion Cliffs NM, Arizona. You need a high clearance 4WD to get to White Pocket. The last few miles are through deep sand. Video runs at 500% normal speed.
Parking lot for top entry for Buckskin Gulch at 0:54.
Parking lot for Wire Pass at 2:55. This is the same parking lot for those lucky enough to get a permit for The Wave in North Coyote Buttes.
