Buena Vista Embraces Past While Looking Toward The Future
The small mountain town is hoping to preserve the past but capitalize on changes.
St Elmo Historic District (Ghost Town)
St. Elmo is a ghost town in Chaffee County, Colorado, United States. Founded in 1880, St. Elmo lies in the heart of the Sawatch Range, 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Buena Vista and sits at an elevation of 9,961 feet (3,036 m).
Nearly 2,000 people settled in this town when mining for gold and silver started. The mining industry started to decline in the early 1920s, and in 1922 the railroad discontinued service.
The community is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the St. Elmo Historic District. It is one of Colorado's best preserved ghost towns.
St. Elmo was originally named Forest City but was later changed because of the multitude of towns with the same name. The name St. Elmo was chosen by Griffith Evans, one of the founding fathers, who was reading a novel with the same title.
The town was at its peak in the 1890s, when it included a telegraph office, general store, town hall, 5 hotels, saloons, dancing halls, a newspaper office, and a school house. The Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad line ran through St. Elmo. There were 150 patented mine claims within the area. The majority of the people who lived in St. Elmo worked at the Mary Murphy, Teresa C., The Molly or the Pioneer Mines. The Mary Murphy Mine was the largest and most successful mine in the area. The Mary Murphy Mine recovered over $60,000,000 worth of gold while it was in operation. While the other mines eventually shut down, the Mary Murphy Mine continued to operate until the railroad was abandoned in 1922.
Once the mining industry shut down, St. Elmo drastically declined in population. Miners searched elsewhere for gold and silver and the business district in St. Elmo closed down as well. Few people continued to live in the town. Postal service was discontinued in 1952 after the death of St. Elmo's postmaster.
Even though St. Elmo is considered a ghost town it is still inhabited. Tourism brings many people to the St. Elmo area every year. The old mining roads are now used as Jeep and four-wheeler trails. There are also many good places to fish along Chalk Creek, which runs through St. Elmo.
The general store is open during the summer, when tourists can rent four-wheelers or buy items. Many of the buildings are still intact. However, the town hall and a few other buildings burnt down in 2002. Buena Vista Heritage is rebuilding the town hall to its original state.

Places to see in ( San Diego - USA ) Cabrillo National Monument
Places to see in ( San Diego - USA ) Cabrillo National Monument
Cabrillo National Monument is at the southern tip of the Point Loma Peninsula in San Diego, California, United States. It commemorates the landing of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo at San Diego Bay on September 28, 1542. This event marked the first time a European expedition had set foot on what later became the West Coast of the United States. The site was designated as California Historical Landmark #56 in 1932. As with all historical units of the National Park Service, Cabrillo was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966.
The annual Cabrillo Festival Open House is held on a Sunday each October. It commemorates Cabrillo with a reenactment of his landing at Ballast Point, in San Diego Bay. Other events are held above at the National Monument and include Kumeyaay, Portuguese, and Mexican singing and dancing, booths with period and regional food, a historical reenactment of a 16th-century encampment, and children's activities.
The park offers a view of San Diego's harbor and skyline, as well as Coronado and Naval Air Station North Island. On clear days, a wide expanse of the Pacific Ocean, Tijuana, and Mexico's Coronado Islands are also visible. A visitor center screens a film about Cabrillo's voyage and has exhibits about the expedition.
The Old Point Loma Lighthouse is the highest point in the park and has been a San Diego icon since 1855. The lighthouse was closed in 1891, and a new one opened at a lower elevation, because fog and low clouds often obscured the light at its location 129 meters (422 feet) above sea level. The old lighthouse is now a museum, and visitors may enter it and view some of the living areas.
The area encompassed by the national monument includes various former military installations, such as coastal artillery batteries, built to protect the harbor of San Diego from enemy warships. Many of these installations can be seen while walking around the area. A former army building hosts an exhibit that tells the story of military history at Point Loma.
The area near the national monument entrance was used for gliding activities in 1929-1935. Several soaring endurance records were established here by William Hawley Bowlus and others including the first 1-hour flight in a sailplane, and a 15-hour flight in 1930 which surpassed the world record for soaring endurance. Even Charles Lindbergh soared in a Bowlus sailplane along the cliffs of Point Loma in 1930. Markers for these accomplishments can be found near the entrance, and the site is recognized as a National Soaring Landmark by the National Soaring Museum.

Since 1909, Hotel Boulderado has offered Rocky Mountain elegance in the heart of downtown Boulder. Experience the charm of a true historic landmark with Victorian heritage and modern mountain style. Located one block away from the famous Pearl Street Mall, encounter luxurious accommodations, exquisite amenities and passionate community.
HISTORY
Our historic property was the first luxury hotel built in Boulder. The name comes from a combination of Boulder and Colorado designed so guests would always remember where they had stayed. Thanks to being a part of Boulder’s rich culture, we are a City of Boulder landmark, proud members of Historic Hotels in America and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The hotel opened the doors in true elegance and style with a Gala Ball on New Year’s Eve in 1908. The first guests were able to check into the hotel on New Year’s Day in 1909. Since then, the hotel has celebrated the date of the grand opening each year with a majestic New Year’s Eve celebration.
Designed by local architects William Redding & Son, the five-story brick building incorporates both Italian Renaissance and Spanish Revival features. It follows a trend of open court hotels started by the Palace Hotel in San Francisco and carried over to Denver’s Brown Palace Hotel, built in 1892. In 2018, we won an award for Best Renovation Project from Colorado Meetings + Events due to the extensive updates completed in the lobby and mezzanine spaces.
Early guests included conservationist Enos Mills, actress Ethel Barrymore, actor Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., and evangelist Billy Sunday. Some who followed were Clarence Darrow, Helen Keller, Robert Frost, Benny Goodman, and Louis Armstrong, as well as a generous representation of today’s political figures, speakers, entertainers, and musicians.
So, whether you want to stay in one of the beautiful rooms or grab something to eat and drink at the in-house restaurants or bars, guests are always welcome to drop by. You can even ride their original Otis Elevator, which is still in operation.
Get a taste of Boulder history when you visit our FREE self-guided history tours on the 3rd floor of the historic section of the property. If you’re interested in a guided tour, inquire with the Front Desk for availability and scheduling.

Where to Trick-or-Treat in Evergreen, Colorado | 80439 | The Evergreen Insider
What do most kids look forward to doing on Halloween? That’s easy! Trick-or-treating, of course! However, in Evergreen, Colorado, this Halloween tradition is executed a little bit differently than most suburban neighborhoods. You won’t see kids walking house to house to collect candy. Instead, Evergreen has three main hubs where kids can go to trick-or-treat and get those sugary delights this Halloween. The first place to check out is called The Island at Hiwan. This gated community opens up its gates for one night to invite trick-or-treaters in to experience the Halloween festivities in a safe environment. The next opportunity kids can explore is in downtown Evergreen. Businesses in this area will open their doors from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Halloween night to give out some tasty treats. The final place where most trick-or-treaters in the area frequent is The Bergen Park Business area. Additionally, the Hiwan Homestead Museum is hosting a Halloween party on Friday, October 30 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be plenty of spooky decorations and a handy fortuneteller to compliment the snacks and beverages available. While the Hiwan Homestead party is going on, you can drop your teens off for their own Halloween party at the Evergreen library from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Have some mountain fun in Evergreen, CO this Halloween with all of these exciting community events!
