It's not something that you see everyday. Thailand's buffalo racing festival is a one-of-a-kind. A novel event that guarantees action, hilarity, cheering fans, beauty queens and all the fun of a rustic Thai temple fair. An annual spectacular in mid-October in Chonburi, a city an hour south of Bangkok, the races have been held for more than 100 years at the end of the Buddhist Lent

Chonburi is the capital of the province with the same name. It is located about 100 km east of Bangkok, near Pattaya. The town holds, every year, a unique festival of riding water buffalos contests. The events are held usually a day before the full moon of October.
The great mammals are dressed with colored cloths and are decorated with bouquets of flowers.
In addition to the riding contests, other events like contests of the most beautiful buffalo wear, parades and various culture events take place.

Jockeys race buffaloes in Chonburi, Thailand. Buffalo races are held at the annual Buffalo Festival in Chonburi at the end of rainy season in mid October and are attended by thousands of locals and tourists. As well as buffalo racing there are many other events including a fair, pole climbing competitions and a beauty pageant where contests compete for the title of Miss Buffalo.

Thailand hosts its annual buffalo race in Chonburi, southeast of Bangkok. Scores of farmers ditched their paddy fields for the race course to sprint across a dusty track on prized water buffalo, vying for glory in a decades-old racing contest.
Annual Chonburi Buffalo Racing Festival celebrated in Thailand
Thailand celebrated its annual Chonburi buffalo racing festival on Tuesday with around 300 buffaloes sprinting to roaring cheers from the crowd.
Extreme Buffalo Racing In Thailand
Locals take part in an extreme buffalo racing competition in Thailand. The men mounted the beasts for the ten-second long sprints at the event in Chonburi province on October 12. They sit on the hind quarters of the powerful animals, using a halter to keep balance while whipping the buffalo. The first to finishing line some 50 metres away is the winner. Locals in the coastal region have been holding the buffalo races for more than 150 years. They began as a way to honour and pay their respects to the farm animal, which is used widely throughout Thailand. The Chonburi Buffalo Racing Festival has now become a popular event for tourists who take holidays to Thailand to visit and watch the spectacle.

The Chonburi Buffalo Racing Festival is one of a kind. It is an entire week of festivities, food, and a large scale fair, but they only race the buffalo on the first day of the event and only for about 5-6 hours. If you plan on visiting Pattaya or Chonburi in mid to late October, this is a MUST see festival.

The century-old Chonburi Buffalo Race in Thailand is a celebration of buffalo, the most useful animal for Thai farmers. During the fun-filled event, the beasts of burden are dressed outrageously or with admirable creativity by owners. Assembled in the courtyard in front of the town hall, the buffalo take part in races, physical fitness and “fashion” contests.
