1880 Town Murdo South Dakota
Hey you guys! Thanks for joining me on another adventure. I got to fulfill a childhood dream of mine this week... I got to play Cowboys & Indians at 1800 Town in Murdo, South Dakota! After exploring this cool live museum with original old structures brought in from all over the state, we learned we could dress up in period garb. I told Alvin & Amy that they were going to dress up too, even though they were really hesitant to do so. I had the great idea to act out robbing a bank, and I found a family willing to join in our fun. I also acted out a gun duel with a German man. One of the employees showed us a jail cell that was all out of doors, except for a tin roof. Glad I didn't get thrown in there after the robbing the bank, haha! There were some bulls & cows nearby that I went over to get a closer look at. One of the bulls was none too happy that I was trying to coax the calf closer to the fence! It was definitely crazy that only a wired fence separated us! The carriage ride throughout the town was cool too; I even got to drive us for a time. Amy took a turn too. If you are ever in South Dakota, or near South Dakota, or have a whim to dress up as a cowboy or Indian and feel like you're back in the day, you MUST come to 1880 Town! It was absolutely amazing!

Buffalo Ranching in Stockton, Utah
This is a short video originally shot with an 8mm camera in 1976 showing the processing of 100 buffalo that were bought in Gillette, Wyoming. The buffalo were sorted, their ears were tagged, they were branded with the Lazy M brand , inoculated for brucellosis and loaded onto two semi-trailer trucks and shipped to Stockton, Utah.
2015: Return to Custer SD after almost 40 years....fixed
On the way back from driving the Wild Life loop, I stopped here in Custer to walk the length of bikes parked along the middle of the street. My first introduction to Custer South Dakota came in July 1977. On that summer evening, only three bikes parked on main street. Coming out of a tavern we saw a BMW from Nebraska parked near our bikes. Soon, the owner and his wife arrived. We started talking. Then, they suggested we should party at his place down the street. NOTE:I checked out that motel as I came into town.
After arriving here in just three days from N.H., we had planned a peaceful dinner, followed by simple rest day. However, due to dubious decisions made that night, that all turned into something quite different.
That said, I will always remember the night spent in down town Custer S.D. And the two trips up to Beaver Lake Camp Ground early the next morning: First, to safely deliver my buddy to our camp site. Then, to fetch his bike back several hours later. At 2am with my buddy slumped down on back of my bike, I was obviously quite concerned about what Custer law enforcement was thinking as we negotiated the length of Main Street!
The next day I was feeling okay. However, as it turned out I should never have attempted maintenance on the bike. Indeed, the ensuing stupidity resulted in me having to borrow my friend's bike for a trip to (what is now) Black Hills Power Sports in Rapid City. That solo trip on a strange machine involved its own set of interesting negative circumstances which at least were not of my making. I guess not everyone in the area liked bikes or bikers. Those guys must have been romantics, because they seemed to want to marry me to a tree.
The balance of the trip went relatively well. I think the only other negative aspect was a kinked chain as we crossed Nebraska. Z1s came with huge chains. But unlike today's smaller O-ring chains, they required almost constant attention. The other minor issue was that unlike the fuel injection systems on modern motorcycles, the Z1's carburettors could not deal with changes in elevation. At Independence pass (12095 feet) in Colorado, the bike would barely run.
The familiar song embedded in the video is dedicated to memories to the 77 transcontinental trip and Custer South Dakota..
