Bukchon Hanok Village (북촌한옥마을) is a Korean traditional village located between Gyeongbok Palace and Changdeok Palace. The beautiful hanok buildings in this village were residences of the nobility during the Joseon Dynasty. Today, these well-preserved hanoks serve as residences, museums, and workshops. Some have been restructured into guesthouses, offering tourists unique and exciting experience. The Bukchon Traditional Culture Center within the village offers various experience program allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of the Joseon Dynasty.

Insane KOREAN BREAKFAST at Bukchon Hanok Village | Seoul, South Korea
On my final morning in South Korea, I headed out early and met up with my buddy Paul from Tastes Seoul Good for one last Korean breakfast in Seoul! Come along with us as we enjoy our insane Korean breakfast and explore Bukchon Hanok Village!

Bukchon Hanok Village is a 14th-century village that has been preserved in Seoul. It lies on a hill between Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace. It’s where government officials and nobility used to live and is super authentic! If you come here, you should respect the people who live there and talk quietly. Don’t be a noisy, disrespectful tourist!
From there, we found a small, diner-like spot selling some amazing Korean foods including gimbap, bibimbap, noodles, soups, dumplings, and more.
Paul ordered a kimchi jjigae, or a kimchi stew with pork and green onions and a side of rice. There are also lots of banchan!
I ordered cold buckwheat noodles with egg, spicy sauce, cucumber, radish, and ice. It looked super cold! I also got a kimchi gimbap and a tuna and kimchi gimbap. The portion sizes for both are unreal! Then I also had some banchan, including kimchi, gelatin, and some vegetables.
First, I mixed up my noodles. They were super thin, almost like glass noodles. I cut them up with my chopsticks. They were super cold and also had some spice to them. It was a crazy combination – I had brain freeze and my lips were tingling from the spice! There was also some amazing cabbage in it, too! The sauce and water they were coated with almost gave them a slimy texture.
Then I went for some gimbap, which had a different rice with a pick tint. It was so tasty, I could eat it all day! The tuna inside was canned and the carrot, egg, and kimchi was a really great combination. It had a different, tangy flavor to it and was really fantastic! The tuna one was great, but the kimchi gimbap was out of this world!
The kimchi on the side was incredible, and the gelatin was bland with a bit of spice. The veggies weren’t so spicy but were still very good. It was a nice, filling meal that was super unique!
We finished up with a rice cake with powdered soybean on it. The entire meal came to just 18,000 won, or a little over $15 U.S.
Then, we headed back into the village. I was hoping to find some souvenir shops so I could get some things for my kids. We took a hike up a hill to the observatory. It was super steep. We reached a viewpoint that looked out over the roofs of the traditional houses and the skyline in the distance.
We continued on to one of the main streets. Everything there was super authentic. The architecture was beautiful. I loved the stonework and the rooftops were emblematic of traditional Korea! There were also lots of gorgeous doorways!
Outside of a couple of ice cream and tea shops, there weren’t any restaurants in the village, so it was a good thing we ate before exploring. I found an awesome, Instagram-worthy door and a souvenir shop at the top of the hill.
Inside the shop, they sold items from Korea, Chinese artifacts, items from Nepal, and more. I bought some cool figurines wearing hanboks. There were also boxes made of mother of pearl, traditional masks, and more!
Outside, we found some pumpkin-flavored traditional taffy. It was pretty hard and the guy used a chisel to chop it up! We spotted some tourists wearing hanboks, which I highly recommend when you come to South Korea, especially the palaces.
Then we headed off to grab some strong, iced Americano coffees with no sugar. It gave me a jolt of energy and was exactly what I needed!

The Bukchon Hanok Village is an area packed with beautiful traditional houses just North of the famous, tourist hotspot Insadong, offering great views onto downtown Seoul. No visit to Seoul is complete without seeing this hidden gem.
The beautiful and well-kept Korean-style houses (Hanok) all along the streets and alleys of the Bukchon Village tell a century old history of how Korea used to look like ages ago and how those local residents used to navigate their everyday lives. Quite a few of these Hanok are available to visitors to enter and have a look around as to how Koreans used to live, how they prepared their meals or even how they preserved the infamous Kimchi for the harsh Korean wintertime.
If you are curious how those old Koreans used to dress like - well you might just know them from the abundant historical TV dramas - the Hanbok (Korean-style dress) is what you are looking for. Not only will you have many opportunities to try and wear these outfits yourself, also you will see many other locals and foreigners alike trying them out, walking around the area, and giving the Bukchon Village just the right feeling. You may also find lots of yummy modern and traditional Korean street food and great handmade crafts in and around this area.

Surrounded by Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace and Jongmyo Shrine, Bukchon Hanok Village is home to hundreds of traditional houses, called hanok, that date back to the Joseon Dynasty. The name Bukchon, which literally translates to northern village, came about as the neighborhood lies north of two significant Seoul landmarks, Cheonggyecheon Stream and Jongno. Today, many of these hanoks operate as cultural centers, guesthouses, restaurants and tea houses, providing visitors with an opportunity to experience, learn and immerse themselves in traditional Korean culture. As Bukchon Hanok Village is an actual neighborhood with people's homes, visitors are advised to be respectful at all times while looking around.

SEOUL - SOUTH KOREA - IN SEARCH OF BUKCHON HANOK VILLAGE
Our next stop after Gyeongbokgung Palace was to leave through the Gwangwamun Gate and turn left to find a historical village right in the city near to the palace. That historical village turned out to be Buckchon Hanok Village located in the Jongno-gu part of Seoul. Surrounded by Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace and Jongmyo Shrine, Bukchon Hanok Village is home to hundreds of traditional houses, called hanok, that date back to the Joseon Dynasty. The name Bukchon, which literally translates to northern village, came about as the neighborhood lies north of two significant Seoul landmarks, Cheonggyecheon Stream and Jongno. Today, many of these hanoks operate as cultural centers, guesthouses, restaurants and tea houses, providing visitors with an opportunity to experience, learn and immerse themselves in traditional Korean culture.
Bukchon Hanok Village reflects 600 years of Seoul’s history. The village is situated between Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace, and its streets are lined with traditional hanok. Unlike other hanok villages (such as Namsangol Hanok Village), Bukchon was not created for tourists and it is a residential village inhabited by Seoulites. The best place within Bukchon to experience the old hanok atmosphere may be Gaehoe-dong. Here, hundreds of hanok sit shoulder to shoulder.
In recent years, the charms of traditional hanok have been receiving increased attention. With recently-opened hanok galleries, craft workshops and hanok restaurants, a new kind of hanok culture is developing in Bukchon Hanok Village. Every nook in this village seems to contain traces of history and young Koreans are re-discovery their pride for hanok through visits to Bukchon.
However contrary to the best laid plans of mice and men our plan to visit the visit went off the rails. Have a look.

Day 2 of my Seoul Travel Vlog and in the first part of the day I head off to Anguk Station to explore the Bukchon Hanok Village home of the Hanok (traditional Korean houses). This place has a lot of rich cultural history and attracts a lot of tourist and it is also pretty close to the other palaces and museums in Seoul. You can pretty much spend a day here walking around taking photos, buying souvenirs and enjoying the scenery.
