We explored Boneyard Beach, where erosion of the island has left what looks like skeletal remains of a forest of Red Cedar and Oak trees.
We spend the day on Folly Beach, just outside Charleston South Carolina and go searching for fossils with Ashby the Paleontologist from Charleston Fossil Adventures! Learn more on my blog:
If you liked Folly Beach, you might also love Boneyard Beach on Bulls Island in Cape Romain on the Charleston coast:
Join us as we stroll Folly Beach Pier and find a shark tooth, stingray tooth, tons of phosphate, a turtle shell and fish skull!

Bulls Island
U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell was at the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge to discuss Bulls Island and how sea level rise is ravaging one of the state's most well known natural barrier islands. This is the section of beach known as the Boneyard.
Bulls Island - Cape Romain
Bulls Island, SC is part of the Cape Romain Nat. Wildlife Refuge and is a primitive natural area. It is a scenic wonder attracting photographers, hikers, birders, naturalists and the like. You will see alligators, birds of all kinds, and a beautiful tree filled beach called the Boneyard because of its its many dead trees and driftwood. There are 16 miles of trails to explore. Shell collecting IS allowed, Bulls Island can be accessed by boat or you can book a boat ride thorough Coastalexpeditions.com. I am not affiliated with this company, but they provide a great way to visit the island. They leave from the boat dock at Awendaw, SC. Prices are reasonable.

Bull Island, South Carolina April 10, 2012
Our family trip to Bull Island. April 10, 2012. We rode the ferry to the island and used our bikes to explore the swamps and beaches. It's a great place to spend the day, but watch out for mosquitos and alligators! They say it's impossilbe to outrun a gator, but hopefully you can at least outrun the people with you.
