A national organisation in Sierra Leone is looking to raise funds and awareness to preserve what was once the country's biggest slave trade port.
The station on Bunce Island was set up 350 years ago to ship thousands of Africans to the Americas.

The trip to Bunce Island was organised by Sierra Leonean Agency- Visit Sierra Leone (VSL)
This trip was very insightful and the tour guide Alusine Kamara was very informative.
We were able to learn more -not only about the history of slavery in Sierra Leone, but also the influence some of our language has in places like America.
We would recommend all young Sierra Leoneans to participate in activities like these as it is a great opportunity to know more about our culture and history and the way in which our people were treated.

SLAVERY IN SIERRA LEONE, BUNCE ISLAND, Day 2 FAMBULTIK TOUR
This episode is an historical journey into the Slavery past of Sierra Leone . Which is rarely seen and exposed via the media, it is hard to swallow at certain parts due to the sheer inhumane treatment of our Ancestors. The involvement of the Monarchy and the US is clearly evident during tour. It makes the demand for reparations all the more real. We happened to bump into Professor David Olusoga, the man who highlighted in the press, the fact that the British Government was still paying compensation to the slave owners up until 2015 and that Black people were also paying this compensation via the Treasury in their taxes . I personally started a campaign to have our families taxes refunded or rebated as they are unethical and totally unfair and inhumane and uncivilised. The professor although unfamilar with the Ryan Racism press coverage of the racial abuse of our sons and my family he was very sympathetic to our reasons for repatriating and he showed me a plaque which was really symbolic and placed by his sister what a powerful family. I was filming and I was emotional even angry at times because we are the only race to face and continue to experience the worst episode in human history yet we are not compensated for the genocidal war of slavery against Afrika and Afrikans. The racism and discrimination that we face on a daily basis only perpetuates the suffering. Being on Bunce Island was a real reminder of the damage cause of the division of the pain the sorrow the complete lack of compassion. The trip was very informative and we had a lot of content and thought it best to split it into videos.
Part two is more in depth and focuses on the experiences that the slaves had to go through on the island. From them being left to sleep outside in all manner of weather conditions, to them being sent to the dungeon as a punishment.
This trip was very eye opening and we encourage you all to participate in the next one to know more about our history.

Bunce Island, a 2016 World Monuments Watch site, was home to one of the most lucrative slave trading operations in West Africa. Melbourne Garber, an engineer based in New York who grew up in Sierra Leone, is one of the key figures bringing greater attention to Bunce Island’s complex history of discovery, trade, slavery, abandonment, and critical conservation needs. Mr. Garber is joined by WMF Program Director Stephen Battle, who has worked in Sub-Saharan Africa for more than 25 years, in this lecture highlighting the island's history, heritage, and ongoing efforts to preserve this priceless piece of Sierra Leone land for the future.

Beautiful Sierra Leone - The Best Country in Africa
Sierra Leone is a country in West Africa, on the Atlantic Ocean. It’s known for the white-sand beaches lining the Freetown Peninsula. The capital city, Freetown, commemorates the nation’s slave-trade history with the Cotton Tree landmark and King’s Yard Gate. Both were known as places of refuge for returned slaves in the 18th and 19th centuries. Nearby Bunce Island was a key departure point during the slave trade.

Bunce Island was one of about 40 slave castles, or fortified trading posts, that European merchants built along the coast of West Africa during the period of the Atlantic slave trade. Slave traders based at the castles purchased African captives, imprisoned them, and loaded them aboard the slave ships that took them on the infamous middle passage to America. Slave castles have been called warehouses of humanity.
