Livingston Mall - Raw & Real Retail
This is our walkthrough of the Livingston Mall located in Livingston, NJ from January 25, 2019. This is a rather middle-of-the-road Simon mall, being very utilitarian if a little dull. All the usual sorts of design choices you would expect from Simon are present here, with some not-half-bad skylights to draw the eye upwards.

There is an interesting article from March 2019 from mcall.com about the death of this mall and why it might have happened here:
Here is some information from Wikipedia:
The Livingston Mall is a two-level shopping mall owned by the Simon Property Group located in Livingston, New Jersey, United States, serving western Essex, Morris and Union counties. The mall has a gross leasable area of 978,034 sq ft. Livingston Mall features 109 specialty shops and is anchored by Barnes & Noble, Lord & Taylor, Macy's, and Sears.
Livingston Mall was planned in the late 1960s and opened for business in stages starting with Bamberger's in 1971, followed by the mall proper itself in 1972 along with additional anchor stores, Sears, M. Epstein, and Hahne & Company in 1972. The mall benefited from the migration of population in Northern New Jersey to suburban and exurban areas, and the exodus of shoppers and stores from downtown Newark, once Northern New Jersey's premiere shopping mecca that was in serious decline since the July 1967 race riots. Both Bamberger's and Hahne & Co. had massive flagship stores in downtown Newark at the time of the mall opening. Sears also had a store on Elizabeth Avenue in Newark's once popular South Ward. In 1986, the Bamberger's store transformed into Macy's. In 1985, Hahne's gave way to Lord & Taylor when its parent company, which owned both banners, decided to retire the Hahne's brand. Around this time the M. Epstein store was converted to an annex for Macy's. Sears remains the mall's sole original anchor.
The mall's Gap store, dating back to 1973, is the oldest surviving GAP store in New Jersey.
Livingston Mall is located at the intersection of Eisenhower Parkway and South Orange Avenue, and is accessible from Exit 4A off Interstate 280, New Jersey Route 10, New Jersey Route 24, Interstate 78, and Interstate 287. Bus service is provided by NJ Transit's 70, 73, and 873 routes. Coach USA's Community Coach 31 bus also serves the mall. The Township of Livingston operates the Livingston Express Shuttle which serves the mall and the South Orange station.

Westgate Mall (MA) - Raw & Real Retail
This is our walkthrough of the Westgate Mall in Brockton, MA from March 28, 2019. This is a rather dull mall located about 45 minutes south of Boston. It really is an enclosed strip center, as without the Mall entrance, you wouldn't know the difference. This mall seems like it is a fairly equal mix of national chains and local knockoff stores meant to look similar to their corresponding national brands.

Here is some information from Wikipedia:
Westgate Mall is a shopping mall in the city of Brockton, Massachusetts. It is the oldest enclosed shopping mall in the state. Westgate Mall features Sears, Burlington, Best Buy, Bath and Body Works, Jo-Ann Fabrics, Famous Footwear, Old Navy, Planet Fitness, and a mix of more than 65 specialty stores including Victoria’s Secret, The Children’s Place and Rue21. Previous anchors include Jordan Marsh, Filene's, Bradlees, Gilchrist's, Child World, CW Price, Fallas, Toys R Us, and Macy's. Eateries include Buffalo Wild Wings, IHOP and Auntie Anne's. Westgate Mall is located at the intersection of Routes 24 and 27 in Brockton and accessible via the Brockton Area Transit Authority. Although Westgate Mall's GLA is small by regional standards, it is also surrounded by numerous adjacent big-box stores including: Walmart, Lowe's, A.C. Moore, Market Basket, Marshalls, and Dick's Sporting Goods. These standalone retailers complement the main building, driving increased traffic to the location as a shopping destination.
On January 4, 2017, it was announced that Macy's would be closing as part of a plan to close 68 stores nationwide. The store closed in March 2017. On June 29, 2018, Toys R Us closed after the chain's liquidation. On August 6, 2018, it was announced Fallas would also be closing as part of a plan to close 74 stores nationwide after parent company National Stores filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The former Macy's was partially replaced with Burlington and Planet Fitness in September 2018 and October 2018 respectfully. On January 8, 2019, Ocean State Job Lot announced that it would be opening in the former Toys R Us sometime in 2019.
Today's 600,000-square-foot mall opened -as the 356,000-square-foot Westgate Shopper's Park- in February 1963. It was expanded in 1984-1985 and substantially renovated between 2000 and 2003, reversing a trend of nearly a decade of decline wherein nearly all of the stores had vacated the center. Nearby malls, including South Shore Plaza and Silver City Galleria, dominated the market in the past 15 years, but the Westgate Mall today has repositioned itself as a smaller, more convenient alternative and as a result, business has improved.
Ownership of the mall has changed hands several times over the past decade. The mall was purchased by New England Development for $17 million in 1999, with plans to revitalize the vintage mall. Over several years, the new owners spent significant resources to remodel it, and were very successful in turning the mall around. In 2004, New England Development sold Westgate to Gregory Greenfield & Assoc. (GG&A) for $58.5 million; three years later, GG&A was taken over by Australia-based Babcock & Brown. In 2009, Bank of America foreclosed the mall due to breach of conditions on its mortgage with Babcock & Brown, and the property went on the auction block. Finally, in 2010, New England Development again purchased the property for $31.75 million, and as of 2016 remains Westgate Mall's current owner.

Eastern Hills Mall - Raw & Real Retail
This is our walkthrough of the Eastern Hills Mall in Clarence, NY from June 23 and 24, 2019. This is a sad dying mall that has a really interesting center corridor that is drastically different than the rest of the mall featuring an almost secret society ritual sort of motif. This mall felt wonderful to walk around.

Here is some info from Wikipedia. I do suggest you also check out eh much more extensive history on the mall hall of fame blog:
Eastern Hills Mall is a shopping mall located 11 miles northeast of Buffalo, New York on the western border of the Town of Clarence in Erie County, New York, United States. The name Eastern Hills refers to the very low hills that contribute to a slightly higher elevation than the bordering areas along the Onondaga Escarpment. It consists of two long wings running north and south and one short wing running east and west, which connects the north-south wings in a double L-shaped formation. A three-screen movie theater showing mainly independent films is also located in the mall, as well as a small New York State Department of Motor Vehicles office. Eastern Hills is considered by many area residents to be a dead mall and is listed on the website Deadmalls.com.
The Eastern Hills Mall was developed by the Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation. The mall was originally to be named Buffalo Mall, but the name was changed to Eastern Hills Mall at the request of the town of Clarence. Fourteen stores opened by November 8, 1971, and the mall was completed by 1972. The original anchors were AM&A's, JCPenney, Sears, Jenss, Woolworth and Hengerer's. Hengerer's became Sibley's in 1981. The mall underwent an extensive overhaul in 1987 that added a food court. Originally the largest mall in the Buffalo, NY area, the mall lost that title to the Walden Galleria in 1989. Sibley's became Kaufmann's in 1990. AM&A's became The Bon-Ton in 1994. By the 1990s the mall was in a state of decline losing many national tenants. In 1997 after ceasing operations, Woolworth closed their store and later that year Jenss closed. In 1998, Burlington Coat Factory moved into the former Jenss location and remained open until 2005. Another renovation to the small east-west center concourse and food court took place in 2005, largely cosmetic in nature. New floor tile was installed in both the center concourse and food court, and imitation fireplaces, small flat screen televisions, and new seating were installed. The longer north-south concourses remained untouched during this second renovation, causing a break in a pink zig-zag floor tile line pattern, which prior to the 2005 renovation could be followed through the entire mall from end-to-end, but now remains only in the north-south concourses, broken by the new tile in the center concourse. In 2006, Federated Department Stores acquired May Company and converted all local Kaufmann's stores to Macy's. By this time, the mall was seeing a minor revival in foot traffic and featured many younger national chains. Many of these storefronts remain empty and only some have been replaced by mom-and-pop stores. Television station WBBZ-TV established its broadcast studios at the mall in 2012.
On January 6, 2016, it was announced that Macy's would be closing as part of a plan to close 36 stores nationwide. The store closed in April 2016. In April 2017, Sears closed their Auto Center. In June 2017, Niagara Emporium opened in the former Macy's space on the first floor, and stating later that they may open on the second floor in the future. On April 18, 2018, it was announced that The Bon-Ton would also be closing as it was going out of business. The store closed on August 29, 2018. On July 27, 2018, it was announced that Raymour & Flanigan would be opening in the former Bon-Ton in 2019. On September 19, 2018, Sears had sold its location in the mall back to the developers. Sears closed in December 2018 after 47 years of operation. As of 2019, JCPenney is the final remaining original mall tenant.
In March 2018, Uniland Development, a local commercial development company, agreed to purchase a stake in the mall's equity, sharing co-ownership with current owners Mountain Development Corporation. Uniland's long-term plans for the mall are to convert some of the mall's space to residential apartments and create a mixed-use development that it dubbed a lifestyle center. The Clarence Town Board approved plans for the lifestyle center in August 2018.

The Mall at Short Hills: New Jersey's very own Taubman - Raw & Real Retail
This is our walkthrough of the The Mall at Short Hills in Millburn, NJ from January 25, 2019. This is a high end fashion mall that is doing quite well for itself. It was designed by Taubman Centers, which gives it a very unique and instantly recognizable look defined by the liberal use of levels, sharp opposing angles, conversation pits, sculptures, fountains, and non-symmetrical geometry.
This particular Taubman property has been modernized a little bit, with some of the more striking features like the conversation pits being replaced with carpeted areas with couches and chairs.

Here is some background from Wikipedia:
The Mall at Short Hills (commonly referred to as Short Hills Mall) is a shopping center located in the Short Hills area of Millburn, New Jersey, United States. The shopping center is located 10 miles (16 km) west of Newark Airport and 23 miles (37 km) west of Manhattan. The mall includes 150 specialty stores and restaurants including Cartier, Chanel, Dior, Gucci, Hermès, and Louis Vuitton, and is anchored by Bloomingdale's, Macy's, Neiman Marcus, and Nordstrom. Over 40 boutiques have their only New Jersey location at the mall.
Throughout the first half of the century, the suburban community grew quickly, and local residents desired quality shopping within their local setting. Their vision began to take shape in 1949 when the Prudential Insurance Company of America acquired a large tract of land where The Mall at Short Hills and part of the Canoe Brook Country Club now sit. Seven years later, B. Altman & Company opened a 130,000-square-foot store on the land and eventually added an additional 50,000 square feet to meet market demands. Local residents continued their demand for expanded retailing and in the early '60s, a small center opened. The open-air center included Bonwit Teller along with retailers such as FAO Schwarz, Pottery Barn and Brentano's. The momentum continued as America's largest Bloomingdale's premiered on the site in 1967. The 243,000-square-foot store included an entire floor devoted to furniture and decorative accessories. In addition, smaller boutiques were created in the store such as, Young World, Delicacies Shop, Au Gourmet, a men’s store, and a restaurant.
In 1974, Prudential Insurance Company of America began working with The Taubman Company, The Mall at Short Hills' current owner. By 1980, the two had completed a two-year, $100 million project to enclose the mall, which at that time included 1,160,000 of gross leasable space and three anchor stores. New retailers included Godiva Chocolatier, Black Star and Frost, The Limited and Gap. The following year, 1981, Abraham & Straus joined the center.
The first phase of a major expansion began in 1993, and was completed in November 1994 adding a 100,000-square-foot Saks Fifth Avenue. Bloomingdale's was renovated, and Abraham & Straus became Macy's. The next expansion phase was completed in August 1995 adding two anchors -- a 129,000 square-foot Neiman Marcus and a 172,000 square-foot Nordstrom -- and many new specialty stores including Tiffany & Co., Crate & Barrel, DKNY and others.
Saks Fifth Avenue closed in September 2016. A portion of the store was converted to the first Indigo Books and Music store in New Jersey, which opened in October 2018.
In 2013 an attorney named Dustin Friedland was shot and killed after heading back to his car in the second floor of the parking deck after shopping. In 2018 The people responsible for this killing were sentenced 30 years in a New Jersey State Prison.

The Most HIDDEN Underground Cities
Have you ever imagined a life without the sun? How could we possibly survive? Today we'll show you how with the most impressive underground cities!
1. GROWING UNDERGROUND, LONDON:
In this city located in an old war bunker in London, they managed to sustain a whole farm. This seems almost impossible, however they did it by using a hydroponic, vertical, pesticide-free system. Also, they use the space much more efficiently, saving 70% of the water used on it.
2. EARTHSCRAPER, MEXICO CITY:
As you had already imagined, this is the complete opposite building to a skyscrapers, as it goes down towards the Earth core. 65 stories to be precise. It has a pyramid-shaped design and an open central space where daylight can flood in to the depths of the earth.
3. THE LOWLINE, NEW YORK:
The Lowline is a project based on the success of the Highline, an abandoned elevated railway converted into a lush public space. The aim is to give an unused trolley terminal a makeover. It's expected to be opened by 2020. The natural light would be directed below ground using a system called remote skylights based on parabolic reflectors and optic fiber cables.
4. RÉSO, MONTREAL:
This is the largest subterranean complex in the world and has been in use since the 1960s. It's a way of hiding from the terrible cold temperatures they suffer. We can find multi-level shopping centers, hotels, restaurants and metro stations. All linked by tunnels.
5. UNDERGROUND CITY, HELSINKI:
This underground city includes more than 125 miles of tunnels filled with everything you would expect in an overground city, and the best thing is that they have plans to continue to expand the subterranean public spaces.
6. SUBTROPOLIS, KANSAS CITY:
This city occupies 1,100 acres of abandoned limestone mines since 1964. More than 1,600 people work in this naturally climate-controlled, rock-carved space every day. We can find subTropolis houses and everything from cave-aged cheese to car storage space, and an array of small businesses. Also it naturally maintains temperatures between 18 and 21 °C all year-round.
7. UNDERGROUND SCIENCE CITY, SINGAPORE:
In Singapore they've had a space problem for a long time. So they designed this Underground Science City for up to 4,200 scientists, researchers, and professionals in Research and Development facilities. But also, there are many restaurants and shopping malls.
9) Burlington, U.K.
This is a city built by the British Government in 1955 in case of a nuclear attack. A 35-acre network of hidden entrances, streets, canteens, and purpose-built rooms to house the Prime Minister, the entire British government and the Royal Family. It even had a telephone switchboard and a hospital inside. However it's been closed off since 1991.
10) Derinkuyu, Turkey
This is an ancient multi-level underground city extending to a depth of approximately 60 metres. It is large enough to have sheltered as many as 20,000 people together with their livestock and food stores. This city could be closed from the inside with huge stone doors and had ventilation and running water.
