Cuyahoga River July 29, 2012
Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA
B. Broad Blvd to Front St Upper Gorge near Sheraton Section
This stretch of river consists mainly of three distinct drops. The Dam, which is a typical low head structure and very dangerous, can be portaged on the left if the level permits. After the dam work your way left and surf the wave adjacent to the diversion dam which is just below the cantilevered restaurant. Make sure to wave at the diners while surfing this spot! After the wave you drop over a small ledge and follow the main flow toward river right which sets you up for the first waterfall. The lead in to Rookie Drop has a pourover which likes to backender the unwary. As you head down the shallow channel, aim for the roostertail and set up to boof the 8-footer at Rookie Drop. At this point, it is always nice to savor the view of the hotel and the gorge which is no longer like the insult in the above photo. Next up is the last drop known as Staircase. The lead in takes you through a riverwide hole where a flip will make for a very bad day! After the hole, follow the tongue toward river left and stay tight to the wall. Staircase is a 15-foot narrow slide into a hole right above a narrowing of the river. The bottom drops out as you go over the lip, and the water accelerates you down.

Man stuck in the Cuyahoga River gets rescued by the Portage County Water Rescue Team
A young man gets stuck in the middle of the Cuyahoga River at Franklin Mills Riveredge Park during the Kent Heritage Fest while trying to catch a frisbee. He got stuck in the river for about an hour until the Kent Police and the Portage County Water Rescue Team figured out a way to get him to safety.
English Lesson - River Fire! - Easy
Easy Text:
On June 22, 1969, oil and garbage in the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio, caught fire!
The Cuyahoga River fire lasted just thirty minutes,
but it did around fifty thousand dollars in damage.
No one knows what caused the fire,
Some say the river just started to burn,
but most people think sparks from a train
landed in the oil floating on the Cuyahoga River.
The flames became very high!
Almost 5 stories tall before fireboats
sprayed water on the flames and put out the fire.
This was not the first time that the river had caught fire.
Fires happened on the Cuyahoga River many times before.
The largest fire was in 1952
and it caused over 1.5 million dollars in damage.
It burned boats and an office building near the river.
Because of this fire, Cleveland businesses
became famous for their pollution.
Cleveland businesses, (especially steel mills) polluted the river,
pouring used chemicals and oil into the river.
At that time there were no laws to protect the environment.
So, what there were doing wasn't really illegal.
Cleveland, and its residents became
the source of jokes across the United States.
The fire also made people realise that
there where environmental problems across the country.
In 1972 the Clean Water Act was made a law.
Fortunately, today the water is much cleaner!
Before, there were no fish living in the river
but a recent study found 44 different kinds of fish.
Unfortunately, the river is still polluted..
mostly by trash from nearby houses,
oil, gasoline washed into the river by rain and sewer water.
Fortunately, today the water is much cleaner!

EXPLORATION: Chippewa Lake Amusement Park - Medina, Ohio
*Note* This video was previously uploaded a few months ago, but I had to take it down for a while due to peculiar difficulties. Here it is again.
4/10/17 - Dante and I embark on yet another urban exploration.
Chippewa Lake Amusement Park, located in Medina, Ohio, has been around since the mid 19th century starting out as only a picnic/recreational ground on Chippewa Lake. The amusement park operated for about a century, closing in 1978 due to inability to maintain attraction from the public.

Lake Vesuvius Lakeshore Trail Overnight
I drag my (soon to be) wife to check out the Lake Vesuvius Lakeshore trail in southern Ohio. This beautiful and scenic trail is in the southern (Ironton) section of Wayne National Forest and is great for day-hikes or a simple backpacking overnight.

Brown Mtn Trail - Shenandoah National Park
Still pics and HD video of a 4.8 mile hike along the Brown Mtn Trail. This is one of the more remote areas in the park. Last year, in the Spring of 2016 more than 10,000 acres burned here and you can see the damage on this hike. The forest is coming back though and in a few more years will be looking good again.
Columbus Greener, the Olentangy Cleaner After
COLUMBUS (Csaba Sukosd) It took a decade to plan, and two years to execute, but the Olentangy River is starting to look more like its natural self after a restoration project of the 5th Street dam.
The $7 million restoration removed the dam, which was originally built in the 1930s to provide water for the Ohio State University power plant, but hadnt fulfilled that purpose in years. The Environmental Protection Agency cited ecological and safety concerns given the pollutants that accumulated in that portion of the river.
You started seeing things like tires, shopping carts, all sorts of things, we found a bowling ball in there, said George Zondos, a spokeperson for Columbus Public Utilities.
On top of the removal of the structure, the river channel was re-engineered along with adding native species of plant life to enhance the development of the natural ecosystem. Wetlands were also implemented for ecological and environmental reasons.
This is one area where we've been able to add actually enhancements such as wetland areas, which are going to capture the flow of storm water from across Olentangy River Road. It's going to cut down on erosion. It's also going to cut down and filter out a lot of pollutants, said Zondos.
For cities that are trying to maximize whatever green space they have, the ability to unveil miles of natural plant, wild, and waterlife is always a welcome addition.
That would be on any city's wish list but we're fortunate enough because of these partnerships to do it right here in the city of Columbus, said Columbus City Councilman Zach Klein, who helped spearhead the initiative more than two years ago.
City officials, like Mayor Michael Coleman, and representatives from the EPA, Ohio State, and FLOW (Friends of the Lower Olentangy Watershed) unveiled the restoration by canoeing down the Olentangy to the site where the dam once stood.
OSU plans on using the river for research purposes in what was described as a live lab.
A similar project focused on park space by the Main Street dam is in the works and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2015.
