This is a full and uncut interview with Vlad Teichberg, of Global Revolution TV, shot in December 2011 at the squat in Bushwick, Brooklyn where Global Revolution TV had set up studio space, just days before an NYPD raid would rout them from the space. Portions of this interview appear in the documentary American Autumn: an Occudoc (available on iTunes, or set your own price for the DVD).
A New Yorker feature article described Vlad and Global Revolution TV in the following way:
Global Revolution brands itself as non-hierarchical, but if anyone is in charge it is Vlad Teichberg, a thirty-nine-year-old former derivatives trader. (...) Teichberg was born in Moscow, and moved with his parents to Queens when he was ten. He attended Princeton, where he wrote a thesis on number theory, then headed to Wall Street, where he worked for Deutsche Bank. I thought globalization was going to create equality around the world, he said. After 9/11, his views changed. The politicization of it—using it to start wars, and the Patriot Act and everything—it was obvious we were heading down the wrong path. He left finance, helped found a grassroots media collective, and poured his savings into the resistance.

'Loose,' Art for the Wild Child | BK Stories
Daniela Kostova’s solo exhibition, Loose, at A.I.R. Gallery (the first women’s cooperative gallery in the United States, founded in 1972) in DUMBO Brooklyn, questions the notions of the balance between freedom and safety in a child’s world. Kostova remembers playing as a child in Bulgaria with hardly any rules and/or regulations. Her installation hearkens back to this feeling of play as a complete abandonment of rules and innocence teetering on peril.
Kostova created a playground within her living room at home and invited her daughter and friends to play within this set up environment of a forbidden safe zone. Photographs of the children playing in Kostova’s indoor playground were ultimately shot during a few sessions.
This Friday, AIR gallery is hosting a panel related to the show on raising wild children.

A Conversation with Danny Lyon
“I am left feeling the people I photograph are the best people in America. I leave to the future the only thing I saw worth leaving.” –Danny Lyon, 1967
Danny Lyon once described the writer James Agee as, “a romantic who adored reality,” an epithet equally apt to characterize him. The photographer made a name for himself in the 1960s with an embedded style of reportage, capturing a compelling beauty in the places and people he befriended across the country, from student leaders of the civil rights movement to convicts in Texas prisons. Subsequently, Lyon turned to non-fiction film as a means to further explore the narrative strands of living reality. He has also continued to make photographs, expanding his focus beyond the United States to work in Colombia, Mexico, Haiti, and China, among other places, as well as turning the lens on himself and his family.
Lyon has described himself as having a short attention span and it is perhaps this that has driven him to explore such different worlds, from the emptiness of condemned buildings to the adventure of the open road. But the diverse subjects are united through his attentive respect; he gets to know his subjects as they really are—the good with the ugly—falls fleetingly in love with some, makes heroes of others. There is power in such attraction and, as Lyon has explained, fact can be discovered, “through forms and beauty. In the most beautiful pictures the truth is easiest seen.”
Drawn from the David Winton Bell Gallery collection, the exhibition presents photographs from four of Lyon’s most significant series—Memories of the Southern Civil Rights Movement (1962–1964), The Bikeriders (1963–1966), The Destruction of Lower Manhattan (1966–1967), and Conversations with the Dead (1967–1968)—supplemented by films. Disparate though their subjects are, the photographs engage in dialogue with each other across time, space, and circumstances.
The Only Thing I Saw Worth Leaving is organized around five such shared principles that Lyon has referred to time and again in discussing his work: empathy, freedom, history, destruction, and narrative. Each section of the exhibition brings together photographs from different bodies of work that engage one of these principles with particular sensitivity, alongside a core group of images from one of the series. This pairing was, to a certain degree, random; each of the series could have been matched with any term. This is the strength of Lyon’s vision, and the vital insistence of his subjects to be seen.

Queens is the easternmost and largest in area of the five boroughs of New York City. It is geographically adjacent to the borough of Brooklyn at the southwestern end of Long Island and to Nassau County farther east on Long Island; in addition, Queens shares water borders with the boroughs of Manhattan and the Bronx. Coterminous with Queens County since 1899, the borough of Queens is the second-largest in population (after Brooklyn), with a census-estimated 2,358,582 residents in 2017, approximately 48% of them foreign-born. Queens County also is the second-most populous county in the U.S. state of New York, behind the neighboring borough of Brooklyn, which is coterminous with Kings County. Queens is the fourth-most densely populated county among New York City's boroughs, as well as in the United States. If each of New York City's boroughs were an independent city, Queens also would be the nation's fourth most populous, after Los Angeles in California, Chicago in Illinois and Brooklyn. Queens is the most ethnically diverse urban area in the world.Queens was established in 1683 as one of the original 12 counties of New York. The settlement was presumably named for the English queen Catherine of Braganza (1638–1705). Queens became a borough during the consolidation of New York City in 1898, and from 1683 until 1899, the County of Queens included what is now Nassau County.
Queens has the most diversified economy of the five boroughs of New York City. It is home to John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport, both among the world's busiest, which in turn makes the airspace above Queens among the busiest in the United States. Landmarks in Queens include Flushing Meadows–Corona Park; Citi Field, home to the New York Mets baseball team; the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, site of the US Open tennis tournament; Kaufman Astoria Studios; Silvercup Studios; and Aqueduct Racetrack. The borough has diverse housing, ranging from high-rise apartment buildings in the urban areas of western and central Queens, such as Jackson Heights, Flushing, Astoria, and Long Island City, to somewhat more suburban neighborhoods in the eastern part of the borough, including Little Neck, Douglaston, and Bayside.

A Stateside Puerto Rican, also ambiguously Puerto Rican American (Spanish: puertorriqueño-americano, puertorriqueño-estadounidense), is a term for residents in the United States who were born in or trace family ancestry to Puerto Rico.Puerto Ricans who were born in Puerto Rico are American citizens as if they were born in the United States. Consequently, using the term Puerto Rican American only for those living in the continental United States is inaccurate and misleading.
At 10% of the Latino population in the United States, Puerto Ricans are the second-largest Latino group nationwide, after Mexican-Americans, and are 1.5% of the entire population of the United States.Although the 2010 Census counted the number of Puerto Ricans living in the States at 4.6 million, estimates in 2012 show the Puerto Rican population to be over 5 million.Despite newer migration trends, New York City continues to be home by a significant margin to the largest demographic and cultural center for Puerto Rican on the Mainland United States, with Philadelphia having the second-largest community. The portmanteau Nuyorican refers to Puerto Ricans and their descendants in the New York City metropolitan area. A large portion of the Puerto Rican population in the United States resides in the Northeastern United States and Florida, with Holyoke, Massachusetts and Buenaventura Lakes, Florida having the highest percentages of Puerto Rican residents of any municipalities in the country. Steve Hindy, founder of the Brooklyn Brewery, discusses his latest book The Craft Beer Revolution: How a Band of Microbrewers Is Transforming the World's Favorite Drink.
Over the past 40 years craft-brewed beer has exploded in growth. In 1980, a handful of “microbrewery” pioneers launched a revolution that would challenge the dominance of the national brands, Budweiser, Coors, and Miller, and change the way Americans think about, and drink, beer. Today, there are more than 2,700 craft breweries in the United States and another 1,500 are in the works. Their influence is spreading to Europe’s great brewing nations, and to countries all over the globe. In The Craft Beer Revolution, Steve Hindy, co-founder of Brooklyn Brewery, tells the inside story of how a band of homebrewers and microbrewers came together to become one of America’s great entrepreneurial triumphs. Beginning with Fritz Maytag, scion of the washing machine company, and Jack McAuliffe, a US Navy submariner who developed a passion for real beer while serving in Scotland, Hindy tells the story of hundreds of creative businesses like Deschutes Brewery, New Belgium, Dogfish Head, and Harpoon. He shows how their individual and collective efforts have combined to grab 10 percent of the dollar share of the US beer market.
