2012 CrossFit Games - Denmark's Team: Butcher's Lab
Team Butcher's Lab from Copenhagen, Denmark entered this year's Europe Regional with high hopes of making it to the CrossFit Games. The team fought hard throughout the Regional and finished in the top five in five out of six events. The Danes managed to grab themselves a well-earned spot in the Games.
The selection criteria for Butcher's Lab team members was simple. The top three women and top three men made the team.
The six members knew each other, but never trained or competed together. Various sporting backgrounds, such as track and field and swimming, played into the strength of the team.
Anita Bonneson, 33, was a member of the Danish National Pole Vault team for many years.
Kasper Hansen, 29, finished his career as a National Team swimmer 10 years ago and has competed in Naval Pentathlon for the past six years.
Hansen originally entered the Open in hopes of competing as an individual. However, he recently returned from his deployment in the Helmand province of Afghanistan where he was battling both the Taliban and a shoulder injury. The latter resulted in the decision not to compete as an individual this year.
Maj-Brith Reffeldt , 25, is a chef who brings a wealth of nutritional knowledge, as well as a broad athletic background in swimming, boxing, yoga, gymnastics and soccer to the team.
Peter Willers Jepsen, 31, has a military background, and is currently a professional poker player. He gave up his chance to participate in World Series of Poker this year to compete at the Games.
Catrine Mannerup, 35, is a mother of three. She balances a demanding lifestyle as a freelance stylist and photographer.
Martin Møller, 31, is the beast of the team. During the Snatch Ladder at Regionals he dislocated a finger. Not to be deterred, he had a friend pull it back in place and went on to set a PR on the next lift. He is also the team's crowd pleaser -- he puts on a great show and never misses a chance to show off his giant calves.
Everybody on the team balances a professional career while trying to fit in as much CrossFit as possible.
The team has been training together one to three times every week. Frank Thøgersen was appointed as a team coach shortly before Regionals and has been guiding the team in its programming ever since.
In a short time, the six athletes have become good friends and a strong team. Above all aspirations to do well at the Games, the team really enjoys spending time together and has a lot of fun doing so. That being said, Team Butcher´s Lab team members say they are more than ready to take on the Games, kick some ass and represent Europe in the best possible way.

Living in such a small international speaking country, makes you outward looking. So, our strategy was always to be international from the start. Aesthetic value has to be considered, but design is more about making high-quality products that solve problems; and that’s inherent of Danish design.
I love exploring cities on a bike. It gives you time to look around and start conversations with locals. I’ve lived in San Francisco and enjoyed cycling there. Their bike culture is emerging, yet Americans are so attached to their cars. It’s interesting to see these two groups merge and co-exist.

The Stream - Denmark's 'halal' and 'kosher' controversy
Subscribe to our channel
Danish Agriculture Minister Dan Joergensen has pledged to review the science of slaughtering animals after meeting with Jewish and Muslim leaders concerned about new regulations that ban halal and kosher slaughter without prior stunning.
The restrictions will have no direct implications for Danish abattoirs because in the last 10 years, no slaughtering has taken place without stunning in the country. People who prefer to eat halal and kosher animals that were not stunned import their meat.
Animal rights groups have praised Joergensen's move to protect animal welfare. But Jewish and Muslim groups say it is a sign of intolerance toward religious minorities. The debate gained momentum internationally after Joergensen stated that in Denmark, animal rights come before religion. Countries like Israel and Saudi Arabia criticised the Danish government for restricting religious freedoms. Many netizens agreed.

Inside One Of The World's Best Restaurants, Noma
The original Noma opened in Copenhagen 15 years ago, surprising guests with its inventive offerings, like dishes disguised as herb pots. Noma was voted number one restaurant in the world four times. But not too long ago, Chef René Redzepi shut everything down. And this latest move could give them back the title.
Noma closed at the end of 2016 before opening its new space in February 2018.

Superflex Interview: A Cool Urban Space
Let's meet on the red square. The artists behind Superkilen explain how this colorful wedge shaped public park in Copenhagen, Denmark, was a collaboration based on extreme civic participation.
A public park in the Nørrebro district of Copenhagen, Denmark, Superkilen was developed by artists' group Superflex in collaboration with architectural firms Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and Topotek1. The park was officially opened in June 2012.
In this interview two members of Superflex, Jakob Fenger and Bjørnstjerne Christiansen, tell us about the ideas behind the project, and how it came about as an extreme example of citizen inclusion and collaboration: We found it interesting to look at this very diverse group of people in regard to culture, social standing, nationality, etc., and then see it as a rich and significant foundation for impacting the area these people live in.
The people living in the immediate vicinity Superkilen relate to more than 50 different nationalities. The idea for the project was to create a space which reflected the people living in the area, by letting the locals suggest object from public spaces around the world. Many of the objects in the park have been specially imported or copied from foreign designs. They include swings from Iraq, benches from Brazil, a fountain from Morocco and litter bins from England. There are neon signs from throughout the world advertising everything from a Russian hotel to a Chinese beauty parlour. Even the manhole covers come from Zanzibar, Gdansk and Paris. In all, there are 108 plants and artifacts illustrating the ethnic diversity of the local population.
We did what we termed extreme civic involvement. We talked to various groups that we had talked to before and asked: What if you could pick whatever you want for Superkilen -- and we go out to find it next week? Five groups of people traveled to Palestine, Spain, Thailand, Texas and Jamaica in order to acquire five specific objects. The objects have since been installed throughout the park. But, as Superflex explain, Superkilen is not just a feel-good social project, it also has a strict conceptual frame. It started out with three colors. We defined 3 very marked symbolic surfaces that are to have a signal value in the public domain. The idea was to create referral points, meeting places, based on strong signals and values.
Stretching some 750 metres (2,460 ft) along either side of a public cycle track and covering a total area of some 30,000 square metres (320,000 sq ft), Superkilen is an urban park project in Copenhagen divided into three main areas: The Red Square, The Black Market and The Green Park. While The Red Square designates the modern, urban life with café, music and sports, The Black Market is the classic square with fountain and benches. The Green Park is a park for picnics, sports and walking the dog.
Superkilen was rewarded with a 2013 AIA Honor Award in the Regional & Urban Design category by the American Institute of Architects. It is shortlisted for Design of the Year by the Design Museum in London as well as for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture.
Superflex is a Danish artists' group founded in 1993 by Jakob Fenger, Rasmus Nielsen and Bjørnstjerne Christiansen. Superflex describe their projects as tools, inviting people to participate in and communicate the development of models that alter production conditions. Often the projects are assisted by experts who bring in their special interest, these tools can then be further used and modified by their users.
Superflex has gained international recognition for their projects, participating in international arts biennials such as the Gwangju biennial in Korea, Istanbul Biennial, São Paulo Biennial, Shanghai Biennial and in the Utopia Station exhibition at the Venice Biennale.
Superflex were interviewed at their headquarters in Nørrebro, Copenhagen, by Jonas Hjort, 2013.

Denmark Cycling Holiday - Copenhagen and Beyond
In May, our Chairman Richard Rice and his family cycled the beautiful surroundings of Copenhagen, experiencing many cultural delights and staying at the same hotel in the Danish capital each evening. View this tour:
Richard said about his tour: We found this to be a great city break with a difference. The kids loved the easy-going rides, especially if there was an ice-cream shop within range! When you reach your destination for the day, you jump on a train with their excellent bike carriages and head back to Copenhagen. We had an extra day exploring the city, seeing the sights, riding past cool coffee shops and enjoying a couple of swimming spots. It was great to be able to walk around the city in the evenings. The Tivoli Gardens were a highlight.
