River Thames Butler's Wharf walk POV. London
Butler's Wharf is an English historic building on the south bank of the River Thames, just east of London's Tower Bridge, now housing luxury flats and restaurants. Lying between the picturesque street Shad Thames and the Thames Path, it overlooks both the bridge and St Katharine Docks on the other side of the river. Butler's Wharf is also used as a term for the surrounding area.
History
Butler's Wharf was built between 1871-73 as a shipping wharf and warehouse complex, accommodating goods unloaded from ships using the port of London. It contained what was reputedly the largest tea warehouse in the world. During the 20th century, Butler's Wharf and other warehouses in the area fell into disuse.
Since the 1980s, Butler's Wharf has been transformed from a derelict site into luxury flats, with restaurants and shops on the ground floor. D&D London owns several of the restaurants, which include Butler's Wharf Chop House, Le Pont de la Tour and Cantina del Ponte.
Butler's Wharf is Grade II listed.
Butler's Wharf is also used as a name for the surrounding area, otherwise called Shad Thames after the main local street.
The mean, dilapidated lanes within the complex enjoyed brief fame as a Dr Who film set during the early eighties, but after the departure of the Daleks the developers moved in and began the transformation of the wharf into an imaginative mix of apartments, offices, restaurants and leisure facilities.
A central piazza is the main focal point of the complex. A riverside walk has also been opened up, part of the Thames Path from the Greenwich flood barrier up to the source in Cricklade, Gloucestershire. The main road though the wharf, the strangely-named Shad Thames, still features the overhead goods gantries that once linked the warehouses together.
Recently opened within the complex are the London Design museum and the adjacent Tea and Coffee museum. The Wharf complex is bounded to the east by the sinister tidal inlet of St Saviour's Dock, beside which stands New Concordia Wharf. This building has now been converted into offices and apartments but, a century ago, Charles Dickens set Bill Sykes's den here in Oliver Twist. I wonder what Dickens would have made of the area's transformation.
Butler's Wharf Chop House, Tower Bridge, London
Butler's Wharf Chop House is a charming restaurant situated on the banks of the river Thames. It's emphasis is on the 'Best of British', whether that's the understated design of the restaurant or the patriotic take on the traditional British Kitchen.
Head chef, Martin Kroon is passionate about high quality, well prepared meats and even offers his own butchery masterclasses at the restaurant. Whether you visit for the famous 'BWCH' burger, spit-roast chicken or steaks directly from the Chargrill, the iconic tower bridge location will ensure a memorable experience.

In order to take the inevitable Tower Bridge pictures, try Butler's Wharf instead of the overrun area outside the Tower! It's a lot calmer there. To get to Butler's Wharf, coming from the Tower, cross the bridge and then go left hand. Not only can you pose for your bridge photos without tons of others impatiently waiting for you to clear the way, the place also has to offer nice restaurants.
Furthermore, the old warehouses are nice to look at. Shades Piazza is a little square with Italian flair where you can relax with a coffee.

London walk: Butler's Wharf, Tower Bridge, South Bank, London Bridge (narrated)
Join me on a grey day deep in October to walk the Thames Path east to west along the South Bank of the Thames from the old Victorian warehouse district of Butler’s Wharf and Shad Thames, past Tower Bridge and continuing along the Queen’s Walk taking in HMS Belfast and ending at Hay’s Galleria with a view towards London Bridge and the City of London.
Walk duration: 25 minutes
Autumn has arrived in London but that does nothing to deter the walking enthusiast! We start on the Thames Path heading towards St Saviour’s Dock footbridge to take a good look at New Concordia Wharf heading from there to the South Bank alongside Butler’s Wharf and Shad Thames. This area was a renowned warehouse complex during the Victorian era, with boats docked up and down the Thames bringing cargo from all over the world. During the 20th century the area fell into disuse and so became a thriving centre for the artistic community. Controversially Terence Conran spearheaded the area’s redevelopment into an upmarket complex of apartments, restaurants and moorings during the 1980s, leaving us with today’s eateries and homes costing upwards of £1 million. I take the opportunity to check out some of the restaurant food prices while I am there. We arrive at London Bridge and walk under it to join the Queen’s Walk towards London Bridge, with plentiful views to enjoy east and west, taking in Canary Wharf, the Tower of London and City skyline vistas. The walk west takes us past City Hall and HMS Belfast, finally arriving at Hay’s Galleria, the start-point to my previous walk from London Bridge to the Tower of London – link at the end of the video.

Live Painting @ Butler's Wharf (London 1991)
Live painting on the frontage of the Butler's Wharf in 1991, before it will be transformed in luxurious flats as all the neighbourhood. A thought for the artists (like the 2B group) who occupied this building in the 70s, and who have organized a lot of artistic happenings in that place.

How to Become TripAdvisor’s #1 Fake Restaurant
This was nominated for a Webby Award in Reality and Weird. Vote for us here!
The Shed at Dulwich was the number one rated restaurant in London, with foodies, celebrities and bloggers trying to get a table. The main obstacle for them, however, was that it didn't exist. Over the course of 8 months VICE's Oobah Butler used an assault of fake reviews to get his 'restaurant' to the hallowed top spot on TripAdvisor.
With his phone perpetually ringing, PR agencies begging to represent it and TV crews pitching shows, Oobah decided he had no choice but to open its doors for one night only. Here is Oobah's journey into a false reality that captured the world's attention.

South Bank London Walk The Golden Hinde to Shad Thames
Walking along the South Bank of the Thames in London, this time from The Golden Hinde in Southwark to Shad Thames by Butler's Wharf and Tower Bridge. In this walk we pass Southwark Cathedral, The London Bridge Experience, Hays Galleria, HMS Belfast, the Town Hall and end up near Tower Bridge, Butler's Wharf, Shad Thames, New Concordia Wharf and Java Wharf.
The light is a bit contrasty, and I haven't found a satisfactory way around that as yet, apart from to film on a cloudy day, which isn't so great... but I'm working on it!
I have a Nikon D3300 with an 18-200 zoom lens (on 18mm), and an AFI VS-3SD stabilizer - the cheapest I could find that looked like it could do the job. It does, but is a bit of a handful.
ABOUT ALPHATUCANA
This channel is about 'waking up' from our matrix-induced slumber, and about leaving the World a better place than we found it. For most of us, our powers and motivation are strictly limited. We are fundamentally alone in a vast and mysterious Universe, but In the struggle to survive, to 'succeed', or to just get by, we sometimes forget the bigger picture, and we sometimes forget to just relax for a while and remember what an amazing World this is. There is plenty to look at: science, Nature, society... And there are plenty of games to help us get away from it all... So on this channel, I vlog about science, Nature, enlightenment, current affairs and much else besides, I upload sightseeing videos showing London, England, or my holidays elsewhere, and I upload gameplay videos. So why not join in for a while and see what you think?
POSTING SCHEDULE
This depends in part on whether I have had time to record videos in between going to work and living the rest of my life! Usually it runs like this:
- Most weekends: a vlog or sightseeing video.
- Gameplay videos: pretty random - typically at midday on weekdays, but not all the time.
- If I have something extra to post it usually appears at some random time :) I may livestream occasionally too.
