Rotterdam, The Netherlands.. City Tour (Part12/12) Hofplein (4K)
Hofplein
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Coordinates: 51°55′27.5″N 4°28′40.1″E
Hofplein
Hofplein is a major public town square in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The square lies on a crossing of the Weena, the Schiekade and the Coolsingel. In the center of the square a large fountain is situated.
Near to the square lied the former Rotterdam Hofplein railway station.
Rotterdam (/ˈrɒtərdæm/ or /ˌrɒtərˈdæm/; Dutch: [ˌrɔtərˈdɑm] is a city in the Netherlands, located in South Holland, within the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt river delta at the North Sea. Its history goes back to 1270 when a dam was constructed in the Rotte river by people settled around it for safety. In 1340 Rotterdam was granted city rights by the Count of Holland and slowly grew into a major logistic and economic centre. Nowadays it is home to Europe's largest port and has a population of 633,471 (2017, city proper), ranking second in the Netherlands, just behind Amsterdam. The Greater Rijnmond area is home to approximately 1.4 million people and the Rotterdam The Hague Metropolitan Area makes for the 168th most populous urban area in the world. Rotterdam is part of the yet larger Randstad conurbation with a total population of 7,100,000.
The city of Rotterdam is known for the Erasmus University, riverside setting, lively cultural life and its maritime heritage. The near-complete destruction of Rotterdam's city centre during World War II (known as the Rotterdam Blitz) has resulted in a varied architectural landscape including sky-scrapers, which are an uncommon sight in other Dutch cities. Rotterdam is home to some world-famous architecture from renowned architects like Rem Koolhaas, Piet Blom, Ben van Berkel and others. Recently Rotterdam was listed eighth in The Rough Guide Top 10 Cities to Visit and fifth in Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2016 and was voted 2015 European City of the Year by the Academy of Urbanism.
The port of Rotterdam is the largest cargo port in Europe and the 10th largest in the world. Rotterdam's logistic success is based on its strategic location on the North Sea, directly at the mouth of the Nieuwe Maas (New Meuse) channel leading into the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta. The rivers Rhine, Meuse, and Scheldt give waterway access into the heart of Western Europe, including the highly industrialized Ruhr region. The extensive distribution system including rail, roads, and waterways have earned Rotterdam the nickname Gateway to Europe, and, conversely; Gateway to the World in Europe.

How Rotterdam became a center of architectural experimentation
In the Dutch city of Rotterdam, architectural experimentation has become a way of life. Unlike many cities that are characterized by a particular building style, Rotterdam cultivates and celebrates its variety and range of architectural themes. Jeffrey Brown visited Rotterdam earlier this year and reports on how the city’s history and culture fostered its remarkable architectural diversity.

The Rolling Stones - European Tour 1973 Rehearsals Mobile Record Unit Rotterdam, August 18-23 (2019)
The Rolling Stones - European Tour 1973 Rehearsals Mobile Record Unit Rotterdam, Netherlands August 18 - 23 (2019). Tracklist: 01. Can You Hear The Music; 02. 100 Years Ago; 03. Brown Sugar; 04. Hide Your Love; 05. Angie; 06. Shine A Light; 07. Star Star (Star Fucker); 08. Gimme Shelter; 09. Rocks Off; 10. Doo Doo Doo (Hearbreaker); 11. Dancing With Mr. D.
The Rolling Stones in secret in the Doelen From August 18 to August 23, 1973, The Rolling Stones practiced in secret in the Doelen for their upcoming European tour. Rotterdam was a city where they thought they would not be disturbed too much, but how do you keep the arrival of the Stones a secret? The Music Expres magazine by Paul Acket, also tour organizer, was at least present during the rehearsals and of course a number of fanatic fans succeeded in making recordings that were later released on bootlegs. The rehearsals contain many songs from the brand new album Goats Head Soup. It is on this occasion that the Stones drew their eye at Ahoy concert hall where they would give three performances on 13 and 14 October. Anja de Jong worked at the time (during rehearsals) as an assistant to Doelen director Huub van Dael. Because Mick Jagger had missed the van that should have taken him to the Doelen, Anja de Jong was asked to pick up Mick Jagger at the Hilton Hotel. According to Anja de Jong, he was small with snow-white sneakers and a bright blue jackie. A telephone booth stood at the door of the Hilton Hotel. Anja de Jong: “Jagger asks me in a sort of English cockney to make a quarter of a call. When that was over, we walked to De Doelen together and you saw people on the street looking and thinking: that sounds like Mick Jagger, but that can't be true? ”Apparently the Doelen liked the Stones, because on January 22nd 1975 the Stonescircus landed again in Rotterdam (Hilton) (until February 6th), this time with their 'Mobile Recording Unit' at night in the small room of the Doelen make recordings for the new album 'Black and Blue'. Various guitarists were also tested to fill the vacancy that Mick Taylor had left open due to his departure. Among others the song Melody was recorded. Fans outside the Doelen moved the microphone of their recording equipment under the banner of the mobile truck and recorded everything for days (actually nights). How the fans knew about the arrival of the Stones? Cycling King Peter Post had talked his mouth out and told a journalist that the Stones wanted to attend the six-day cycling day. Not only the music was recorded, but also the sound of trams passing by, so no ideal recordings.
The secret stay of the Stones in Rotterdam would be the start of a long tradition of performances in Rotterdam, from three times Ahoy ten times in De Kuip and until (probably) once again in Ahoy in 2003.

Traditional Dutch food | Poffertjes recipe - Holland Holiday
Baking ‘poffertjes’
Poffertjes are a kind of tiny pancakes, baked in a special ‘poffertjespan’, a dimpled cast-iron pan.
It's a real traditional Dutch dish. Children in particular love it.
Usually they are eaten with butter and powdered sugar and sometimes with syrup.
At many events you will find a poffertjes stall.
But you can also prepare them at home. It is quite simple. We’ll show you now! (how?)
You need a bowl, a spoon to stir the batter, a scale and of course a ‘poffertjespan’.
A squeeze bottle or a ladle will be useful to pour the batter into the dimples. In this case we use the bottle.
Necessary ingredients:
Wheat flower, 250 grams
250 milliliters of (whole) milk
Dairy butter
2 eggs
A pinch of salt
A teaspoon of baking soda, 5 milliliters.
Put the wheat flower in the bowl and mix it with the salt.
Add small amounts of milk, stirring constantly. Add the 2 eggs and keep stirring until there are no more lumps.
Then heat the ‘poffertjespan’ until it is hot.
Put a little butter in the dimples and turn the heat to medium.
Fill the dimples halfway with the batter and once the poffertjes are slightly brown at the bottom turn them with a fork.
When both sides have a light brown color they are ready.
Put them on a plate and serve them with a knob of butter and powdered sugar.
Or a knob of butter and syrup.
Enjoy your meal!

Visit The Netherlands - What to Know Before You Visit The Netherlands
Read the Blog for More Information on The Netherlands:
Heading to The Netherlands & Not Sure What to Expect? Well here we go through the top things that tourists should know when they visit The Netherlands.
1. It is The Netherlands, Not Holland. Holland is the name of two counties in The Netherlands.
2. The language of The Netherlands is Dutch, but as a tourist you really do not need to know any Dutch as the Dutch speak English extremely well throughout the country.
3. The Euro is the currency in The Netherlands and you can find ATMs all over the country. Credit cards are widely accepted as well.
4. The Netherlands is a small country with a very well developed transportation network. Therefore you can easily take trains all over the country in a fast and efficient way. Make sure you tap in and out with your tickets as you enter your platforms.
5. Biking is a very popular pastime and way to get around Dutch cities. There are a number of bike rental agencies throughout The Netherlands. Look for one near a train station and rent a bike for the day to explore, or sign up for one of the numerous bike tours around the country.
6. The Netherlands is rather safe for tourists. Do take care with pickpockets and extremely aggressive beggars in Amsterdam's more popular areas. The bike line is for bikes only so watch out unless you want to get hit by a bike and yelled at by a local.
7. Drugs bring a lot of tourists to Amsterdam and the Dutch/German border. If you are going to The Netherlands to experiment with soft drugs make sure you go to a Coffee House they have menus and trained personnel that can help travelers. We do not recommend you do drugs and highly discourage travelers from doing this. However, we do know a number of tourists do go there for that. So please be safe, and speak with the coffee shop attendant about your previous experiences so they can help you.
9. The best things about the Netherlands are the quaint cities and towns like Haarlem, Leiden, Groningen, as well as the larger cities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The architecture and museums throughout the country really are outstanding. And yes you will see quite a few windmills as you explore The Netherlands.
10. The food is hearty in The Netherlands, make sure you try a bitter ballen or a traditional pancake or herring from one of the stalls. The market and food halls have tons of great treats for travelers. There are numerous international restaurants all over The Netherlands as well.
11. The Netherlands is not a cheap place to visit, however the prices are on par with the US & other major European destinations. Amsterdam accomodation will be your biggest expense. Therefore you may want to stay outside of Amsterdam to have a cheaper and more Dutch experience.
