Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park
This weekend Gloria, Mom and I spent time at some local National Historical Parks. George Washington (as you should already know) was a land surveyor. One of his plans was the building of these canals to transport goods (mainly coal). From the video you can tell, I was especially fascinated by the manual canal lock gates.
The lock gates used on the C&O Canal were an adaptation of a design by Leonardo DaVinci in the late 1400's.
C&O National Historical Park
Here is a film that was created for a C&O Canal visitor center. It shows the beauty of the Canal and all the different aspects of the 184.5 miles of the canal! If you can't make it to the park here is a great representation!

Great Falls and C & O Overnight Backpacking Father and Son
Looking for an adventurous location to explore outdoor near Washington D.C. that is suitable for all ages and animals. Try day hiking or backpacking the Great Falls and Chesapeake & Ohio Canal. Julian Baby Bear and I Papa Bear completed 6 miles overnight hike to enjoy each other's company and nature. We saw an array of animals and challenged ourselves physically and mentally. We hiked the Billy Goat Trail B, the C and O Towpath, and the River trail. We camped at the Swains Lock or lock 21, mile marker 16.5.
Special thanks to the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC). Billy Goat B Trail was an awesome trail to explore for a father and son beginners team.

Abandoned-Williamsport Tannery
Today me and Brandon venture to an abandoned tannery in Williamsport Maryland. We origionally went there with the notion of sneaking in but instead we met the new owner as he was leaving and were able to talk him into letting us go around and film the tannery in its final days. The tannery was much larger and is being dismantled and salvaged for other use. If we would have come a week or two earlier I would have most likely gotten full footage of the place while it was still all standing.

Day Odyssey Series: Wilds Of West Virginia (with March winds!)
The next in our Baltimore-based daytrip series takes us into the mountains of West Virginia...but not till after we deal with gale-force winds a couple days before! Lost our power for several hours, but it comes back on as I do my follow-up later at night!
OK-on with the odyssey...
Again beginning on Interstate 70 to give us a jump on things, we make a brief stop in Williamsport MD for a quick look at the C&O Canal's Cushwa Basin, and the restoration of the Conococheague Aqueduct.
Then on to (or into) West Virginia! Via US 11 and WV 901 we head for wicked WV 9 (mountain crossings, curves and all-but some great views) and take that west to the towns of Berkeley Springs, Keyser and Piedmont WV, where we check out the former B&O RR stations. En route, we stop at Prospect Peak for a great view into the Potomac River valley! A few all-new locations too, and the usual history!
We make our way back on MD 36, I-68, then back on 70.
Done on March 4 2018.
P.S. Still regulated to public PCs, so bear with me if I don't respond to your comments right away-but I will ASAP!

A quick drive through of Williamsport MD in Washington County, early Sept 2016 on Maryland Route 68 west.
Yes Williamsport MD was once considered for the United States Capitol as suggested by its founder Brigadier General Otho Holland Williams. Williamsport was founded on two crossroads nestled in the rolling hills of Maryland next to the Potomac River. This was a time before major highways, Railroads and even the C&O canal which was later built along the river. Williamsport provided a river which could be used as access to the Chesapeake Bay and then the Atlantic Ocean. Even Harpers Ferry Wv was considered for the Capitol for a time. It was later decided the Potomac River was to unpredictable with its flooding and too unavailable with the shallow depths and rocks to provide adequate transportation. To that end the C&O canal which had later been built to remedy the river access issues was out dated even before its completion due to the evolution of the Railroads.

C&O Canal Lock 75, Cumberland, Maryland
While traveling west on the scenic byway, Maryland Rt. 51, enjoying the amazing beauty of rolling wooded hills, farmlands, the rows of round bales of hay, horses, cows, sheep and dark green fields of young crops of corn, eventually we needed to find a rest stop. Coincidental to the urgency of our needs, we came upon an open area with a small gravel parking lot, one Porta Potty and a sign that read Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, Lock 75. After relieving ourselves, we explored the restored canal site and lock house, and walked a short distance down the C&O trail, recording this video along the way.
C&O Canal Conococheague Williamsport Chushwa Basin
Williamsport and the surrounding area has a fascinating history. Situated at the confluence of the Conococheague Creek and the Potomac River, Williamsport was first settled in 1740. In 1790 George Washington considered it for the capital city of the United States but rejected Williamsport because of the inability of large ships to navigate the Potomac to this point. Close by is Falling Waters where the Confederate Army made its escape across the rain-swollen Potomac after the Battle of Gettysburg.
Williamsport is the only place on the canal where examples of major canal structures can be viewed within a half-mile stretch. A half-mile rewatered section of canal leads through the turning basin, under the only Railroad Lift Bridge as well as the only Bollman Iron Truss bridge on the canal, and continues to Lock House 44 and the adjacent lock. The Conococheague Aqueduct is located on the Northwest side from the turning basin and is currently under construction. The limestone stone arch structure has been severely damage from decades of floods on the (influent) upstream side, from the 568 square mile Conococheague Sub-Water Basin of the Potomac River Water Shed.

Brunswick Family Campground
The Brunswick Family Campground sits between Point of Rocks and Harpers Ferry, along the Potomac River and C&O Canal Trail. I was fortunate enough to be given permission to film with my newly purchased drone. The site is full of beautiful trees that create an amazing canopy for sites on the west end. The east end is more open but just as homely feeling with families and their campers lined along the loop. Best of all, the staff that runs and maintains the grounds are some of the most friendly folks you'll meet. Activities are not just limited to the campground itself, after all, it is located on the river, trail and nearby civil war sites.
As thanks for allowing to fly in and throughout the site, I've put this together for them to use to show others how beautiful the campground really is.
