It was a beautiful day for a baseball game at Shirley Povich Field at Cabin John Regional Park in Bethesda. But there was no game scheduled. Instead, several Montgomery County councilmembers and former Springbrook High School football star Shawn Springs gathered in the morning to announce the launch of the Montgomery County Sports Hall of Fame (MCSHF).
Nominations for the MCSHF will be accepted beginning June 1 until June 30. The induction ceremony will take place September 13 at the Silver Spring Civic Center. No details on where the Hall of Fame will be permanently housed.

C&O Canal Montgomery County Maryland
The C&O Canal is one of the country's great national treasures. And luckily for residents here, it travels the entire southeastern border of Montgomery County.
The canal is easily one of our favorite places here. When you're on the towpath, you feel like you're in the middle of wilderness - far away from one of the country's biggest metropolitan areas. It's an amazing recreation area with a fascinating history.
The C&O canal starts in Georgetown. When construction kicked-off in 1828, the original plan was to build a smooth ribbon of flat water all the way to Pittsburgh - 460 miles away. Ultimately - unforgiving terrain, engineering challenges, floods and the rise of the railroad reduced it to 184 miles ending in Cumberland, Maryland.
The canal was left to neglect in the 1920s and was constantly threatened by road projects and development. It took the hard work of many preservationists and a supreme court justice to help the public appreciate just how special this place is.
Now, as a national park, the canal is perfect for a run, family walk, fishing, bike rides and more. There's a lot to see at Great Falls in Potomac - the Great Falls Tavern, a working barge, and the actual Great Falls on the Potomac River. From here you can also access one of our area's very best hikes - the Billy Goat Trail.
There's other access points to the canal all along the Clara Barton Parkway, Macarthur Blvd and River Road. The scenery and vistas change throughout the canal in Montgomery County, so you're always rewarded by checking out different locks. It's a pretty awesome place that's worth visiting as often as you can.

Fred Smoot and Julie Donaldson Promote Big Train Celebrity Softball Classic
Fred Smoot and Julie Donaldson promote the The Third Annual Big Train Celebrity Softball Classic featuring Athletes vs. Media.
This charitable event will be held at Shirley Povich Field (10600 Westlake Dr. Bethesda, MD 20852) in Cabin John Regional Park on Saturday, April 12th, 2014 at 7PM. FanFest will kick things off beginning at 5:30PM and include great family fun, rides and games, a Redskins themed auction, giveaway items, and free food for the first 500 people! There will be plenty of opportunity to meet your favorite participants on the field immediately following the game for pictures and autographs.
Former Washington Redskin, Chris Cooley, looks to guide the media team to their first victory as he fills a dual role as manager and player for this year's media squad. In 2013, the media team fell to the athlete team 10-3. In the inaugural 2012 game, the media team lost by the score of 3-2.
The proceeds raised from the game will benefit the team's foundation to improve and build baseball fields in nearby communities to provide local children with better places to play. Proceeds will also benefit Lorenzo Alexander's ACES Foundation, The Brave Dave Open, and the Washington Redskins Alumni Association.
