Caesarea National Park, Israel
Caesarea National Park is the ancient ruins site of a important port city Caesarea Maritima. Built by Herod the Great in around 25-32 BC, it was a great commercial centre during the Byzantine Period.
Caesarea served as the headquarters of Judea Province of the Roman Empire being losing economic significance after the Arab conquest in 640 BCE. It was conquered by the Crusaders on May 17, 1101, before being destroyed by Mamelukes in 1265.
Today, there are cafes and restaurants, as well as souvenir shops. Caesarea National Park makes a fascinating step for visitors to history of this remarkable ancient city that survived not just destruction and war, but the through the ever-trickling sands of time.
Caesarea National Park is located on the Israeli coastal plains, mid-way between Tel Aviv and Haifa.

My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Last time we spent a pretty nice day in Caesarea, so I wanted to share it with you!
Caesarea is a magnificent site, a national park where amazing ancient harbor ruins, beautiful beaches, and impressive modern residences sit side by side. Caesarea is originally an ancient Herodian port city located on Israel’s Mediterranean Coast about halfway between Tel Aviv and Haifa. The site has recently been restored to create one of Israel’s most attractive and fascinating archaeological sites. The restored Caesarea amphitheater hosts modern-day concerts during the summer months, whilst the Old City has a range of boutiques and restaurants. The new town of Caesarea is a luxurious neighborhood of villas, whose beach, the Caesarea Aqueduct Beach is one of the best beaches in Israel.
Caesarea National Park is one of, if not Israel’s, most impressive archaeological site. The beautifully restored harbor here was built by King Herod and is a work of engineering marvel. The site is a fascinating place to explore and the museum includes a great multimedia explanation of the history of the port.
Within the park is the Caesarea Amphitheater, also restored, which during the summer regularly hosts concerts of both local, and international acts. See our listing of concerts in Caesarea for more. The Harbor Beach is located within the Park although you can enter separately, and is totally unique in its setting, with superb facilities.
Caesarea National Park is a half-day attraction which is great all-year round. It is easily accessible by road, although getting to Caesarea by public transport can be tricky. Many tourists, therefore, decide to visit the site on a tour of Caesarea, many of which incorporate other sites along the coast and can start from either Tel Aviv or Jerusalem.

1. Caesarea was built by Herod the Great about 25 to 13 BC as the port city called, “Caesarea Maritime.”
2. It was named after the Roman Emperor, Augustus Caesar.
3. King Herod the Great was the one who had all the children 2 years and younger slaughtered in Bethlehem in his attempt to kill Christ. He was a jealous king who feared losing his power and control.
4. King Herod built Caesarea out of nothing and was a great builder. Some of his major building projects included:
• This seaport of Caesarea
• The new platform, and temple in Jerusalem
• Masada
• The Herodian by Bethlehem
5. He was known for his building ventures and no one equaled him in this respect.
6. Caesarea was the largest seaport in the Roman Empire during the time of Herod.

Caesarea Maritima (Greek: παράλιος Καισάρεια) is a national park on Israeli coastline, near the modern city of Caesarea. The ancient Caesarea Maritima (or Caesarea Palestinae[1]) city and harbor was built by Herod the Great about 25--13 BCE. The city has been populated through the late Roman and Byzantine era. Its ruins lie on the Mediterranean coast of Israel, about halfway between the cities of Tel Aviv and Haifa, on the site of Pyrgos Stratonos (Straton's Tower).[2] The national park is a popular location for the summer period, having a developed promenade with restaurants and coffee shops. The access to the Caesarea Maritima national park is via the coastal road.
Caesarea Maritima was named in honor of Augustus Caesar.[1] The city was described in detail by the 1st century Roman Jewish historian Josephus.[3] The city became the seat of the Roman prefect soon after its foundation. Caesarea was the administrative capital beginning in 6 CE.[4] This city is the location of the 1961 discovery of the Pilate Stone, the only archaeological item that mentions the Roman prefect Pontius Pilate, by whose order Jesus was crucified.[5]
The emperor Vespasian raised its status to that of a colonia. After the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE, Caesarea was the provincial capital of the Judaea Province, before the change of name to Syria Palaestina in 134 CE, shortly before the Bar Kokhba revolt.[6] In Byzantine times, Caesarea remained the capital, with brief interruption of Persian and Jewish conquest between 614 and 625. In the 630s, Arab Muslim armies had taken control of the region, keeping Caesarea as its administrative center. In the early 8th century, the Umayyad caliph Suleiman transferred the seat of government of the Jund Filastin from Caesarea to Raml

King Herod the great, named so because he was also a great builder who built many colossal projects in the land of Israel.
The 2nd temple in Jerusalem, the fortress at Masada, the port city at Caesarea and the palace fortress town at Herodian where he was finally buried are some of his grand achievements.
In 15 B.C. the harbor was completed and named Caesarea in honor of the Roman emperor Caesar Augustus.
A 10 km long Aqueduct was built to bring fresh water to the city.
A hippodrome was built to have 'Ben Hur' style horse and chariot racing and could hold 20,000 spectators. The large Roman amphitheater was renovated and is still in use today.
It is from Caesarea that Pontius Pilate governed the land during the time of Jesus.
In 640 A.D the city fell to the invading Arab armies and was left in neglect. In 1265 A.D the Mamluks captured the city from the Crusaders and destroyed it to the ground.
