Caladesi Island State Park
Caladesi Island offers one of the few untouched pristine beaches in Florida, which is why it's regularly recognized as one of the world's best. It's a short ferry ride from Honeymoon Island State Park or accessible by kayak or personal boat.
Honeymoon Island - Dunedin, FL
Honeymoon and neighboring Caladesi Island were originally part of a large barrier island that split in half during a major hurricane in 1921, this the name of the inlet near the South Beach, Hurricane Pass.
According to the Florida Park Service, Honeymoon Island was introduced to the American public in the early 1940s through newsreels and magazines. The advertisements promised undiscovered pleasures for newlyweds. According to the Dunedin Museum, located in Dunedin on the mainland which lays claim to both Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island, Honeymoon Island was formerly known as Hog Island. In the early 1940s, honeymoon-type huts were built on the island for vacationing, and the name was changed. World War II began and the thatched huts fell into disuse. The structures were torn down as the island was turned into a state park. However, the name stuck. A causeway leading to the island was constructed in 1964.
Today Honeymoon Island is a popular vacation destination, wedding venue, and a hanging for residence of the Tampa Bay Area.
One of the island's services, that of a ferry to Caladesi Island, is only for convenience to those in the Honeymoon Island area to reach Caladesi Island across Hurricane Pass. Caladesi Island is easily accessible by walking from Clearwater Beach, Fla. as it has been for decades, and is only separated by a welcome sign from the south.

Briefly it was promoted as a destination for honeymooners. During the Second World War it used by the Marine Corp to test tracked amphibious vehicles. About Honeymoon Island
Turquoise Waters and White Sand Beach
The men and women of the Tocobaga tribe were its first recorded visitors. By 1530, Spanish explorers had scanned the island's coast. For the next two centuries, pirates, traders and fishermen came and went. The Tocobagans, wiped out by foreign diseases, stayed. Their bones reside in the low-lying mounds on the adjacent islands. With the advent of exploration and settlement, the island's metamorphosis quickened. By the 1830's, it was finally on the map as Sand Island. The Hurricane of '48 drove five feet of water over it, and a faltering hog farm was at least successful enough for a name change to Hog Island by 1880. In 1921, another hurricane split the island, forming Hurricane Pass and Caladesi Island to the south.
Americans got their first glimpse of Honeymoon Island in the early 1940's through newsreels and magazine ads which promised undiscovered pleasures for newlyweds. The palm-thatched bungalows, or cottages, subtropic climate and balmy breezes seemed perfect. It was until Pearl Harbor. America went to war, factories operated around the clock. A New Yorker who had purchased the island in 1939 for $30,000 saw his vacation paradise re commissioned as an R&R site for exhausted workers.
By the 1950's, man was a major competitor in the reshaping of what was now Honeymoon Island. A causeway bridged the gap between Honeymoon and the mainland by 1964, and the island passed through the hands of several development corporations.
Visitors can observe one of the few remaining south Florida virgin slash pine stands along the island's northern loop trail. These large trees serve as important nesting sites for the osprey.
Other important coastal plant communities found on and around the island include mangrove swamps, seagrass beds, salt marshes, tidal flats, and sand dunes.

Tarpon Springs and Sponge Docks | Honeymoon Island
What an amazing day we had at Tarpon Springs, Florida, as we visited this quaint town, eating an amazing breakfast at Toula's Trailside Cafe. After that we ventured down Pinellas trail to the Sponge Docks. Here we learned about the world's largest working sponge dock, harvesting tons of living sponges annually for export all over the world.
The sponge industry was started by immigrant Greeks during the early 1900s. They brought their skills and expertise to this area creating a thriving economy in this area. Today, the Greek influence can still be seen in the people, food and culture.
After this, we traveled a short distance to Honeymoon Island near Dunedin to catch some beach time with our dog, and to take in an amazing sunset!

Hurricane Pass between Caladesi Island and Honeymoon Island
The Gulf Coast has a couple of places labeled Hurricane Pass because once in a great while, Hurricanes create a new break in the barrier islands. This one is between Caladesi Island and Honeymoon Island. The tidal currents pull through this pass at high speed at certain times of the day. This gives you something totally new to experience while at your Clearwater Beach rentals.

DUNEDIN
Dunedin /dəˈniːdɪn/ is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The name comes from Dùn Èideann, the Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. Dunedin is the 5th largest city in Pinellas County.
Dunedin is home to several beaches, including Dunedin Causeway, Honeymoon Island, and Caladesi Island State Park, which is consistently rated among the best beaches in the world. Dunedin is one of the few open waterfront communities from Sarasota to Cedar Key where buildings do not completely obscure the view of the Intracoastal Waterway and the Gulf of Mexico beyond; a 1-mile (1.6 km) stretch of Edgewater Drive (also known as Alternate US 19) south of downtown offers views of St. Joseph Sound, Clearwater Beach, and Caladesi Island. Downtown Clearwater and Clearwater Beach are a 6-mile (10 km) drive south on Edgewater.
The downtown business district is notable for its absence of large commercial signage, corporate franchise restaurants or chain retail stores. The Pinellas Trail, a 39-mile-long (63 km) bicycle and pedestrian trail that traverses all of Pinellas County, bisects downtown Dunedin. A large portion of the trail lies on the former roadbed of the Orange Belt Railway, the first railroad in Pinellas County, which arrived in 1888.
Since 1977, Dunedin is the spring training home of the Toronto Blue Jays, as well as the class-A Dunedin Blue Jays of the Florida State League. Dunedin is one of the smallest communities used by Major League spring training teams, although surrounded by a large metropolitan area. Dunedin Stadium is situated next to the Dunedin Public Library a few blocks south of downtown on Douglas Avenue, and is just two blocks east of Edgewater Drive. The stadium was built as a replacement to Grant Field, the Blue Jays' first spring training ball park. The library was founded in 1895 and is the oldest public library in Pinellas County.
Until early 2005, Dunedin was the home of Nielsen Media Research's production operations. The city is home to multiple breweries including Dunedin Brewery, Florida's oldest microbrewery.
SAFETY HARBOR
Safety Harbor is a city on the west shore of Tampa Bay in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. It was incorporated in 1917. Safety Harbor's tree-lined streets and quaint, small-town appearance are unusual in heavily urbanized Pinellas County.
The area has been inhabited since the Stone Age. In June 2008, a 6,000-year-old spearhead was found at Marshall Street Park. The inhabitants of the area at the time of Spanish exploration were the Tocobaga people, who lived in villages around Tampa Bay. The adaptation of this culture relied on wild resources. Safety Harbor sites have yielded pottery, and artifacts of copper, shell, and stone. The Tocobaga were known for constructing various ceremonial and communal mounds to bury the dead. Most of these mounds were destroyed in the early 1900s due to development. However, one of these ceremonial mounds is still visible in Safety Harbor's Phillippe Park. Shells found in these mounds were used to pave city streets.
In 1528 Spanish explorer Pánfilo de Narváez landed in the area, followed by Hernando de Soto in 1539. Safety Harbor (formerly known as Worth's Harbor) was first homesteaded by Count Odet Philippe, a French nobleman who is credited with introducing the grapefruit to Florida in 1823. The name Safety Harbor originated from the early 18th century, when pirates were a substantial influence in the area. Once ships reached this area of the bay, all threats from pirates were gone, and it was commonly referred to as a Safe Harbor.
