Writing Calcutta - A conversation with Amit Chaudhuri
On 22 February 2013, Caravan Conversations, in association with Penguin India and Oh! Calcutta, hosted a conversation titled Writing Calcutta. The conversation also saw the Delhi release of Amit Chaudhuri's new book Calcutta, an account of two years in the city, also the place of his birth. In his book, using the historic elections of 2011 as his fulcrum, Chaudhuri travels between the 19th century, when the city glittered, to the 20th century, where it lost its shine under 34 years of communist rule. Chaudhuri was in conversation with Ananya Vajpeyi, and the restaurant Oh! Calcutta served as a warm and welcoming venue.
Hoogli or Hooghly River in Calcutta
Hoogli or Hooghly / Hooghly / Hoogly/ Hogli River in Calcutta / Kolkata
The river provides perennial supply of water to the plain of West Bengal for irrigation and human & industry consumption. The river is navigable and the major transport system in the region with a huge traffic flow. For a long time, the Calcutta Port was the biggest port of India. Though in the past its significance had gone down, but recently it had again came up to the 3rd position in the list of Indian Ports. The fish from the river are important to the local economy.

Kolkata Panorama | City Tour
Kolkata was India’s capital once and now look at it. Anyways facts apart.
It is said to be the second largest city after New Delhi, beating Mumbai and Bangaluru. Kolkata is better known as the “city of joy”, but it has also other names such as “city of palaces”, and the “cultural capital of India”. The city has changed a lot in last few years in terms of its outer get up. But dows it change the lifestyle of the people who are living here? Thats a big question.
On a random ride with a bicycle I tried to cover few busy and common areas of the city, and to be very honest it doesn't look that good. Full of chaos and clumsiness. Though this is my personal assumption.
VICTORIA MEMORIAL II KOLKATA TOURIST PLACES II CITY TOUR II BEST PLACE IN KOLKATA II WEST BENGAL
The Victoria Memorial is a large marble building in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, which was built between 1906 and 1921. It is dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria (1819–1901) and is now a museum and tourist destination under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture. The memorial lies on the Maidan (grounds) by the bank of the Hooghly River, near Jawaharlal Nehru Road (better known as Chowringhee Road).
In January 1901, on the death of Queen Victoria, The 1st Baron Curzon of Kedleston (later created The 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston), the then Viceroy of India, suggested the creation of a fitting memorial. Lord Curzon proposed the construction of a grand building with a museum and gardens. Curzon said,
Let us, therefore, have a building, stately, spacious, monumental and grand, to which every newcomer in Calcutta will turn, to which all the resident population, European and Native, will flock, where all classes will learn the lessons of history, and see revived before their eyes the marvels of the past.
The Prince of Wales, later King George V, laid the foundation stone on 4 January 1906, and it was formally opened to the public in 1921.
In 1912, before the construction of the Victoria Memorial was finished, King George V announced the transfer of the capital of India from Calcutta to New Delhi. Thus, the Victoria Memorial was built in what would be a provincial city rather than a capital.
