Travels With Woot: Call of the Wild Museum
Come with us to Gaylord, Michigan, the Paris of Otsego County!
Gaylord probably has lots of virtues -- but to us, it's chiefly known for being home to the famous Call Of The Wild museum of North American wildlife, a can't-miss stop for devotees of classic roadside attractions and for aspiring taxidermists alike.
Enjoy the video -- and if there's an interesting site or event near you that you think the Travelcam team should visit, let us know about it in the comments below!
Fat chance it'll be as cool as Call Of The Wild, though.

Call Of The Wild 4/5/2017
The beautiful sunrise is so pretty and way different than yesterday and the day before. Then After that I got ready and headed on the road. For a long journey but exciting one to a wiat. The sunrise is the first picture and a great way to start the day
On my way to the call of the wild that is a small museum with a gift shop. That was a cool small animal museum with a gift shop. The hole museum is animal (not alive) in their habitats. I really like those museum because I love animals and learning about them. It was a cool museum, because it like you are in a cave with the animals. Then on the floor their are painted bear prints. When you are walking through the museum you can play a scavenger hunt game with the animals in the museum. There are three different levels that you can do, and you can be any age to play. If you complete the scavenger hunt you can get a cool sticker. From the gift shop I got a blanket that is like a bear. It has a hoodie with a bear face on it. Also on the corner that is like a packet that has bear paw prints on them for your hands.
Finally for the day we headed to the upper Peninsula. This is the first time I ever went to the upper peninsula. It is very pretty here and the bridge was cool and so pretty to go over, and to see how high you are over the water. I know that the Mackinac Bridge is not the biggest in the world but, it’s the biggest I have seen so far.
Joseph Bailly (1774-1835) Projections at Call of the Wild in Gaylord
These two famous trappers are in the Canadian wilderness in 1796 with his friend Jean Baptiste Clutier
What to do Jean Baptiste? Mackinaw is such a fine place, good forests-rich land-friendly Ottawa. Still Quebec, that beautiful city! A gentle life. Good wine, good food, pretty woman. It would be an easy life there Jean, an easy life. NO! This is life here! Here is this wild land!Yes it is hard, but it's good. It toughens the body-toughens the spirit! The winters are cold, the forests are deep and wild, a bear trap has bitten my leg! But still, it's a good life. This land has a rhythm all it's own. This is the way Jean. This is the way of freedom-of adventure. I'll be back

After 99 years, Michigan’s elk herd is flourishing
Today’s Michigan herd dates to 1918, when seven Rocky Mountain elk were relocated to the Gaylord area from western areas of the United States. Thanks to extensive public and private wildlife management in the last four decades, an aerial survey in early 2016 found an estimated population of more than 1,300 animals – well above the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ population goal of 500 to 900.

For the love of Michigan elk
A lot of hard work takes place every day, from public and private groups, to scientists and volunteers, to ensure that Michigan’s wildlife and natural resources can be enjoyed for years to come. On June 2, 2018, Michigan United Conservation Clubs partnered with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Huron Pines AmeriCorps to plant 40 oak trees and remove signs and fencing from a 60-acre property recently acquired by the Pigeon River Country State Forest. This work is important for ensuring ideal habitat for Michigan’s elk population, which is primarily located in northern Michigan near Gaylord. Michigan’s current herd dates to 1918, when seven Rocky Mountain elk were transplanted to the Gaylord area from the western United States, making 2018 the 100th anniversary of the elk’s reintroduction to the Great Lakes State.
Want to catch a glimpse of a majestic elk? There are many viewing areas across the Pigeon River Country State Forest for nature lovers to visit all year. Learn more.

Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor, Joliet, Illinois
This canal was built in the 1830s and 1840s along the portage between Lake Michigan and the Illinois River, which had long been used as an American Indian trade route. The canal rapidly transformed Chicago from an isolated crossroads into a critical transportation hub between the East and the developing Midwest. A 61-mile recreational trail follows the canal towpath.
